WooCommerce’s built-in variable products handle attribute combinations and variation-level details such as price and stock. To show or hide extra fields when a shopper selects a variation—or answers another question—you need an add-on extension whose documentation specifically supports conditional logic. WooCommerce’s official Product Add-Ons extension does not include that feature.
Choose the feature that matches what you need

These features solve different problems. First decide whether you need variation-specific product data, conditional extra fields, product dependencies, or a guided configuration. Then check that the exact extension you choose supports the behavior and works with your WooCommerce, theme, and editor setup. Current compatibility and pricing are not established here.
Set up the variable product
Variations are the valid combinations of a product’s attributes—for example, a shirt’s size and color. You can create every possible combination or add only the combinations you actually sell.
- Open the product editor. Create a product or edit an existing one, then set its product type to Variable product.
- Add attributes and values. Define the choices customers will use, such as size or color, and save the attributes for use in variations. The variable-product documentation covers global and product-specific attributes.
- Create the valid variations. Generate all combinations if every combination is available, or add selected variations if some combinations are not sold.
- Set each variation’s details. Configure applicable variation-level information such as price, stock status, image, and shipping data. Save the product.
WooCommerce’s variable-product guide covers the product editor’s variation workflow. Customers must choose the required options before they can add a variable product to the cart.

Add conditional fields with an extension that supports them
Once the variations work, add any extra inputs—such as personalization details or an accessory choice—using an extension that expressly documents conditional field visibility. Do not assume that a plugin called “Product Add-Ons” supports conditions: similarly named products can have different capabilities.
In the documented Conditional Logic Rules workflow, configure the condition on the field that should appear or disappear. The rule uses a condition source, a relation and value, a show-or-hide action, and a setting for whether any or all conditions must match. For example, a personalization field could be shown only when the relevant variation or another field’s answer matches the rule.

The official Product Add-Ons documentation states: “Product Add-Ons does not have built-in support for conditional logic.” It also says add-ons attached to a variable product apply to every variation rather than being defined separately for each one. The documentation points readers seeking conditional fields toward Gravity Forms and its Product Add-Ons extension. Check the exact extension name and its current compatibility before installing anything.
Test the shopper experience
After saving the product and field rules, preview the product page as a customer. Test each relevant variation and condition, not just the default selection.

- Select each required attribute and confirm the intended variation is available.
- Switch between variations and check that the correct conditional fields appear or disappear.
- Change answers that trigger field rules and verify the configured show-or-hide behavior.
- Confirm that the selected variation’s price and availability match its settings.
- Try adding the configured product to the cart after choosing all required options.
When to use dependencies or a guided build
If the requirement is to make one product available only when another product is selected, use a product-dependency feature rather than treating it as a field-visibility rule. The Product Dependencies documentation describes rules for variable products and constraints on self-dependency through a product’s own parent or variation.
If the customer must assemble a product from several components in a particular flow, a composite-product approach may be a better fit than adding many fields to one variable product. WooCommerce describes Composite Products as a way to guide customers through component options and support conditional logic.
