To run a YouTube channel continuously through AWS Elemental MediaLive, first configure an upstream source and create a matching MediaLive input; then create the channel, select a pipeline class, add an RTMP output, and enter the ingest details YouTube gives you. AWS lists both Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2) for MediaLive, but you must verify that every other AWS service your design needs is available in the chosen Region.
This setup assumes an upstream source can keep supplying a live program or network stream. MediaLive’s input, output, and channel settings depend on that source. If your goal is to loop uploaded recordings as a YouTube live stream rather than transmit a continuously supplied source, see the cloud option below.
Before you build: define the source and the full workflow
MediaLive processes a source that is supplied to it; creating a channel alone does not provide video to broadcast. Before opening the AWS console, write down what will feed the channel and how it will connect. AWS says the source’s protocol and format determine the appropriate input type, and the input must exist before you create the channel (AWS: creating inputs).
Recommended Free Tools
- Source: Is it a camera/program feed, a network stream, or another source? Record its format, protocol, credentials, and whether it pushes to AWS or MediaLive pulls from it.
- Region: Choose a MediaLive Region after checking all supporting services in the proposed workflow, not just MediaLive itself.
- Availability: Decide whether one pipeline and one destination per output meet your needs, or whether you need MediaLive’s two-pipeline Standard class and duplicate output destinations.
- YouTube event: Create or identify the YouTube live event and retrieve its ingestion URL and stream name. Keep any stream key private.
- Operating plan: Identify who will respond if the upstream source, channel, or YouTube destination stops working, and estimate costs from your actual profile and expected delivery.
For a 24/7 schedule, test the entire path before relying on it: a working MediaLive channel cannot compensate for an upstream source that stops sending media or a misconfigured YouTube event.

Choose an India Region and check quotas
AWS lists Asia Pacific (Mumbai), ap-south-1, and Asia Pacific (Hyderabad), ap-south-2, as MediaLive Regions. The listing does not establish that every companion service in your design is offered in either Region. Check availability for each service you plan to use, such as packaging, delivery, or storage, before settling on the architecture. AWS’s MediaLive endpoints and quotas reference is also the place to start for current Region and quota information; account limits can differ, so inspect Service Quotas for your own account and request an increase if needed.
Create the MediaLive input first
- Confirm the connection pattern. Establish whether your source pushes to AWS or MediaLive pulls from it. For a push input, coordinate the source-side configuration and the MediaLive input endpoint. For a pull input, confirm that MediaLive can reach the source and that credentials and network access are correct.
- Create the matching input. In the AWS Elemental MediaLive workflow, configure an input that matches the upstream protocol and format. Do not select an input type merely because it is convenient; it must match how the source actually sends media.
- Configure the upstream device or service. Apply the endpoint and connection details from the input to the source using its own interface. AWS documents specific RTMP push handshake behavior for push and pull AWS Cloud inputs; check the applicable input documentation for your chosen type.
- Verify media reaches the input. Confirm that the source is actively sending the expected audio and video before proceeding. Store endpoints, credentials, and keys securely, and do not publish them in logs, screenshots, or public support requests.
AWS describes the input as the connection between the upstream content source and a MediaLive address. Its channel and input setup guide covers the role and input information used in channel creation.

Select Standard or single-pipeline channel class
The channel class is an availability and destination-architecture choice, not simply a quality setting. AWS defines the behavior as follows (AWS: channel class):
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Class | Pipeline behavior | Downstream destinations | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Two pipelines | Each output is delivered to two destinations | When the design calls for a second pipeline and duplicate destinations for greater failure tolerance |
| Single-pipeline | One pipeline | Each output has one destination | When one pipeline and one destination per output meet the availability requirement |
Standard does not remove the need to consider source failures, destination configuration, or operator response. Choose the class after deciding what redundancy the upstream and downstream parts of the workflow require, and compare the resulting costs. The AWS documentation describes the architecture behavior; it does not prescribe one class for every 24/7 channel.

Create the channel and configure a YouTube output
- Create the channel using the existing input. Select the appropriate MediaLive role, input specification, and channel class. The AWS channel setup flow covers these choices; confirm that the role and account permissions support the resources you intend to use.
- Add an RTMP output group and output. Configure the output destination for the YouTube event. MediaLive’s channel API represents the destination with URL and stream-name fields (AWS Channels API reference).
- Copy the live event’s actual ingest details. Use the ingestion URL and stream name supplied for your YouTube stream. YouTube’s LiveStreams API distinguishes the ingestion address from the stream name and can provide primary and backup RTMPS addresses (Google for Developers: LiveStreams API). Do not use sample credentials or substitute a guessed URL.
- Protect the stream key. Treat the stream name/key like a password: limit access, avoid putting it in source code or public notes, and rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed. Verify whether your YouTube event expects the primary or backup ingest destination before configuring MediaLive.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Use RTMPS when the selected MediaLive output and destination settings support the YouTube address you are configuring; otherwise resolve protocol compatibility before starting the channel.
Match the encoder settings to YouTube and your source
Use an output profile supported by both MediaLive and the YouTube ingest settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS protocols, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube lists recommended bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps (YouTube: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

| Setting | Practical configuration guidance |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS as supported by the output and the YouTube ingest destination; prefer RTMPS for encrypted ingest. |
| Video codec | H.264 is listed in YouTube’s supported encoder guidance. |
| Rate control | CBR, as listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. Keep the output aligned with the source and the YouTube event’s intended format. |
| Keyframes | Set a two-second keyframe interval where supported; YouTube says the frequency should not exceed four seconds. |
| 1080p H.264 bitrate | YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 12 Mbps at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or proof that your upstream network can sustain the feed. |
| Resolution and audio | Choose the output resolution and audio format to suit the source and the selected YouTube profile; validate both in a representative test rather than assuming the source will map cleanly. |
Do not raise resolution or bitrate beyond what the source can deliver consistently. Confirm that the output profile, source frame rate, network capacity, and YouTube event are compatible together. A bitrate target applies to the encoded stream; allow sufficient stable upstream capacity for the complete stream and its network overhead.
Test, publish, and monitor the 24/7 stream
- Send representative content. Test with normal audio levels, motion, and the resolution and frame rate you intend to use. A static image alone will not reveal every encoding or audio issue.
- Check YouTube’s preview and health messages. Confirm the incoming video and audio, inspect stream health, and address warnings before making the event public.
- Verify the viewer-facing event. Confirm that the live event is actually playing as expected from the viewer side, not merely that the MediaLive channel has started.
- Test the operating response. Establish who checks the source, MediaLive state, and YouTube messages, and how that person will respond to an interruption. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube encoder guidance).
- Monitor continuously. Watch channel state and input/output health, and define an escalation path for source or destination failures. Standard class offers a two-pipeline/duplicate-destination design, but it does not constitute a complete failover runbook.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- MediaLive input is not receiving media: Recheck that the selected input type matches the source protocol, that push/pull direction is correct, and that the upstream system is using the right endpoint and credentials. Confirm that the source is actively transmitting.
- Channel will not start or cannot use a resource: Check that the input exists, the selected role and account permissions are valid, the service is available in the chosen Region, and the account has sufficient quota.
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: Compare the configured destination URL and stream name against the exact details for the intended live event. Check RTMP/RTMPS compatibility and whether the event uses the primary or backup address.
- YouTube reports ingest or stream-health warnings: Verify H.264 and CBR settings, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio; then check that the upstream connection can sustain the configured output. Use YouTube’s health messages to narrow the issue rather than changing several settings at once.
- Video works but audio is missing or poor: Inspect the source audio, output audio configuration, and YouTube preview separately. Test again with representative sound before relying on the stream.
- The stream starts but later stops: Check whether the upstream source stopped, the MediaLive channel changed state, or YouTube reported an ingest problem. A 24/7 operation needs an assigned operator and an agreed response path; the channel class alone does not diagnose or repair every failure.
Estimate AWS cost from the actual 24/7 design
The title and Region alone are not enough to determine a monthly bill. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment planning guide provides a scenario-specific US East (N. Virginia) example with a stated stream profile and viewer/distribution assumptions. It separates encoding, packaging/origination, and distribution costs; that example is not an India price for this channel.
