There is no single iPhone setting called “Auto Network Switch.” The right setting depends on what you want: use cellular data alongside a weak Wi-Fi connection, fall back to cellular when Wi-Fi is unavailable, automatically join a saved Wi-Fi network, or join a nearby Personal Hotspot. Apple’s current iPhone guide is for iOS 26; labels and availability can vary by iOS version and region.
Use cellular data while connected to Wi-Fi
To let cellular data supplement Wi-Fi on a particular network, turn on Apple’s Use Connectivity Assist option for that network. This may use cellular data and count against your plan; allowances and charges depend on your carrier.

- Open Settings and tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap the Info button next to the connected network.
- Turn on Use Connectivity Assist, if it appears.
Apple describes this control as using cellular data in addition to Wi-Fi. See Apple’s Manage Wi-Fi settings on iPhone.
Let iPhone fall back to cellular when Wi-Fi is unavailable
You do not need to enable Use Connectivity Assist for ordinary fallback: Apple says iPhone automatically connects to your carrier’s cellular data network if a Wi-Fi network is not available. This is different from using cellular data in addition to an available Wi-Fi connection. See Apple’s guide to connecting iPhone to the internet.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Choose whether iPhone automatically joins a saved Wi-Fi network
Auto-Join controls whether iPhone joins a specific known Wi-Fi network automatically. Turn it off to keep the network saved but connect to it manually.
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Tap the Info button next to the network.
- Turn Auto-Join on or off.
To remove the saved network instead, choose the option to forget it. Forgetting removes the network and its saved password; it is not the same as switching off Auto-Join. Apple explains both choices in its guides to how Apple devices decide which known wireless networks to auto-join and forgetting a Wi-Fi network or preventing automatic joining.

- Choose an available preference, such as Ask to Join or Automatic.
For details, see Apple’s instructions for using Instant Hotspot.
