Selenium still drives the browser; Eyes captures and compares the visual checkpoints.
What you need before setup
- An Applitools account and API key.
- JDK 8 or later.
- Maven.
- Google Chrome and a ChromeDriver whose major version matches Chrome. A mismatch can cause a Selenium WebDriver initialization exception.
These are the prerequisites in Applitools’ Selenium Java quickstart. Check the installed Chrome and ChromeDriver versions before running the test.
Set the API key without putting it in source code
Set the environment variable APPLITOOLS_API_KEY in the shell where Maven will run. The quickstart gives these commands:
- macOS or Linux:
export APPLITOOLS_API_KEY=<your-api-key> - Windows Command Prompt:
set APPLITOOLS_API_KEY=<your-api-key>
Use your actual key in place of the example value. Do not commit a real API key to the project or hard-code it into Java source.

Run the official Selenium Java example
- Clone Applitools’ example-selenium-java-basic project.
- Change into the cloned project directory.
- Install the Maven dependencies by running
mvn install. - Run the sample test with
mvn exec:exec@run-the-tests -Dexec.classpathScope=test.
The example test is src/test/java/com/applitools/example/AcmeBankTests.java. The sample uses Eyes around Selenium browser actions and demonstrates a full-window checkpoint as well as Layout matching applied to selected dynamic regions. The quickstart is a living page, so check its current dependency and API examples if the project’s code no longer matches your installed SDK.
How the Eyes flow fits into a Selenium test
Selenium WebDriver performs the browser actions against the website. The Eyes SDK uses that driver to capture screenshots at visual checkpoints and sends them to Eyes Server, where they are compared with stored baselines. Testers inspect the result and manage baselines in Eyes Test Manager. See Applitools’ Eyes system overview.
- Configure an Eyes runner and a
Configuration, including the API key and batch. - Open an Eyes test around the Selenium WebDriver.
- Use Selenium to navigate and reach the page state you want to check.
- Call
eyes.check()at meaningful visual checkpoints. - Close the Eyes test when the expected checkpoints are complete. Ensure test cleanup aborts an unfinished Eyes test and shuts down the browser if an error occurs.
Each eyes.check() represents a visual test step. Put checks after the application reaches stable, meaningful states rather than after every browser action.

Choose browser targets and matching rules
Browser and device coverage
The quickstart demonstrates desktop browser and viewport targets, plus Chrome device emulation through the Eyes Configuration API. Select targets that represent browsers, viewports, or devices your site supports and your team needs to cover. Its examples are not a universal required matrix.

Applitools describes Match Level as an AI algorithm trained to compare screenshots and flag differences. The documented choices are:
| Match level | What it checks | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Strict | The default visual comparison. | Use when visual differences, including appearance changes, should be reported. |
| Ignore Colors | Like Strict, but ignores color changes. | Use when color variation is not the change you want this check to detect. |
| Layout | Overall structure and relative positioning; the documentation says dynamic content will not be flagged. | Use selectively for regions where content changes frequently but layout is what matters. |
For known dynamic content such as account balances or frequently changing tables, the sample applies Layout matching to selected elements. Prefer region-level rules over relaxing the whole page: a broad rule can conceal visual changes outside the dynamic area. Choose the match level according to the regression you intend to catch, then inspect actual diffs.

Review the first run and later differences
After execution, open the Applitools Dashboard and inspect the batch, test status, test steps corresponding to the eyes.check() calls, and browser or device information. A first run may create the baseline; subsequent runs compare their checkpoints against it.

- Update or accept a baseline only when the visual change is intentional.
- If the difference is unexpected, investigate the application, test state, target configuration, and matching rule before changing the baseline.
Eyes is a visual comparison layer, not a replacement for Selenium’s role in driving the website or for deciding whether an observed change is correct.

Troubleshooting setup and test results
WebDriver fails to initialize
Check that Chrome and ChromeDriver have matching major versions, then verify the driver is available to the environment running the test. Version mismatch is a stated prerequisite issue in the quickstart.
The API key is missing or not recognized
Confirm that APPLITOOLS_API_KEY is set in the same shell or process environment that launches Maven. Re-run the appropriate export or Windows set command; avoid solving the issue by committing the key in source.
Maven cannot run the sample
Run mvn install from the cloned example project directory, then invoke the quickstart’s test command there. If the example or SDK has changed, consult the current quickstart for dependency and invocation updates.

Visual changes are noisy or important changes are missed
Check whether the page was captured at the intended state, whether the chosen browser or viewport matches the target, and whether a match level or region rule is too permissive or too strict for the content. Keep Layout matching confined to known dynamic areas and review the dashboard diff before baseline changes.
