A basic project should open at http://localhost:4200/.
What you need before installing Angular
Angular CLI runs on Node.js, so install a compatible Node.js release before creating a project. Angular’s current installation guide lists Node.js v22.22.3 or newer; its local setup guide describes the requirement as an active LTS or maintenance LTS release. Since compatibility depends on the Angular version, check the guidance for the release you plan to use rather than assuming the newest Node.js version is always compatible.
- A terminal: Windows Terminal or PowerShell on Windows, or a terminal app on macOS or Linux.
- A text editor. Angular recommends Visual Studio Code and Angular Language Service, but an editor is a workflow choice, not a requirement.
- A package manager. Angular’s setup guide lists npm, pnpm, yarn, and bun; the CLI defaults to npm.
If you only want to explore Angular without installing tools, Angular provides an online playground.
Install Angular CLI
Open a terminal and install the CLI globally with npm:

npm install -g @angular/cliThe package is @angular/cli; its ng command creates and manages Angular workspaces and applications. Angular documents package-manager alternatives in its local setup guide.
If installation fails, check permissions before changing system settings. On Windows, PowerShell’s execution policy can affect npm scripts. On Unix-like systems, global script ownership or permissions may be the cause. Angular advises understanding the implications before changing an execution policy or using elevated privileges.

Create a new Angular project
From a directory outside any existing Angular workspace, run:
ng new my-appReplace my-app with your preferred project name. The CLI creates a workspace directory, generates the initial application, installs its dependencies, and may ask you to choose options such as whether to configure routing. For a first project, accepting the defaults is a reasonable way to get started. See the ng new command reference for options such as choosing a package manager, skipping dependency installation, or creating an empty workspace.

Run the app in your browser
Move into the new project directory and start the development server:
cd my-app
ng serve --openAngular’s setup guide uses ng serve --open; the installation guide also documents npm start. The server builds the app and watches for file changes. When it reports that it is listening, open http://localhost:4200/ if the browser does not open automatically.

Know where your project files live
The initial application’s source files are in src/. Angular workspaces can hold multiple applications and libraries; additional generated projects go under projects/ by default. The workspace file-structure guide explains the generated layout.
For a straightforward first app, use the workspace created by ng new my-app. If you specifically need several applications in one workspace, Angular documents an empty-workspace approach: create it with ng new --no-create-application, then generate applications with ng generate application. Run workspace commands such as ng generate from inside the workspace.

Choose a package manager and editor that fit your workflow
npm is the default documented by the CLI, while Angular also lists pnpm, yarn, and bun. Use the package manager already established for your project when joining an existing codebase; for a new project, npm is the simplest documented default. Angular distributes the CLI as @angular/cli; see its npm dependencies reference.
Visual Studio Code with Angular Language Service is Angular’s recommended workflow. The first-app tutorial also names WebStorm. Neither editor is required to install or run Angular.
