For the best layout, place Thermacell LIV 2.0 repellers around the outdoor areas people actually use—not just along the property line. Keep each repeller within 10 feet of seating or gathering spaces, space units no more than 20 feet apart, and leave clear space around each unit. Before mounting anything, choose a hub location that meets the power, Wi-Fi, height, and cable-routing requirements.
The instructions and coverage figures below are Thermacell’s guidance, not independent performance testing. Actual protection can vary with the layout and obstructions.
Plan the layout around where people spend time
Start by identifying the deck, patio, outdoor kitchen, play area, firepit, or other defined spaces you want to protect. Decide whether the priority is one seating area or several occupied zones around the yard. Then choose possible repeller locations around those spaces, taking account of cable routes, mounting surfaces, plants, walls, and other obstacles.
Thermacell’s support FAQ describes each LIV repeller as providing a 10-foot radius in any direction, a 20-foot zone, and a minimum of 315 square feet of coverage. The company recommends keeping repellers no more than 20 feet apart and within 10 feet of seating or gathering spaces. Treat those as manufacturer placement recommendations, not a promise of uniform protection in every yard.

- Prioritize the spaces where people sit or gather.
- Keep the distance between neighboring repellers at 20 feet or less.
- Keep a repeller within 10 feet of the seating or gathering area it is intended to serve.
- Allow at least 18 inches between a repeller and plants, walls, or other obstructions.
How to interpret the advertised coverage figures
Thermacell’s materials do not give one reconciled maximum-area figure. Its LIV 2.0 product page says up to 3,000 square feet per hub; its June 2, 2026 launch announcement and LIV systems overview say 3,140 square feet. The support FAQ’s minimum of 315 square feet per repeller would total 3,150 square feet for ten units. These are company-published figures, not independently measured coverage results, so use the spacing and seating rules to plan your actual layout.
Thermacell describes a maximum of 10 repellers and four branches for LIV 2.0. Repellers run outward from the hub; the layout cannot split directions or loop back to complete a circuit. Choose and mount the hub
Select the hub location before laying cables. Thermacell specifies a 120V GFCI outdoor outlet within six feet, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi coverage for app setup and monitoring, and a vertical mounting position at least 30 inches above ground. Mount the plate level, secure the hub vertically, seat the power cable fully, and route cables downward or otherwise protect them from the elements. Leave the hub unplugged until you are ready to test the system.
Wi-Fi is needed for LIV+ 2 app features such as schedules, timers, notifications, refill-life monitoring, shared access, and firmware updates. Thermacell says basic repellency remains available without Wi-Fi, but firmware updates cannot be sent.

Mount repellers with clearance
Mount repellers 2–4 inches above ground and keep them at least 18 inches from plants, walls, and other obstructions, following Thermacell’s placement guidance. The company’s FAQ also recommends placing units at least 10 feet from water. It separately says the product label has no water restrictions; the 10-foot figure is a placement recommendation, not a regulatory restriction.

- Wood decks and railings: use the appropriate deck or railing mount.
- Lawn or garden beds: use ground stakes. Push a stake in by hand; do not use a hammer or mallet.
- Stone or pavers where drilling is unwanted: use a hardscape base.
- Vertical surfaces: use a side mount.
Connect cables, test the system, then secure the runs
Keep cables accessible and unburied during the first test. The hub must be unplugged before you connect or disconnect repellers. Connect from the hub outward, linking each repeller to the preceding unit. Do not loop the run. Install the terminator on the final repeller at the end of the longest chain. On shorter branches that use a splitter, Thermacell’s LIV 2.0 notes say to leave the screw caps on the last repeller’s unused female pigtail.
- With the hub unplugged, connect the hub, repellers, branches, and terminator according to the planned layout.
- Plug in the hub and press its center power button.
- Check that the hub ring illuminates and that the repellers show a chasing amber pattern.
- Wait about 15 minutes. Thermacell says the repeller lights should then turn solid blue.
- If no lights appear, check the connections. Once the test is confirmed, turn off the system before finishing the installation.
- Secure the cable routes to reduce damage and tripping hazards. Choose fastening hardware suitable for the mounting surface and outdoor exposure.
Thermacell’s reviewed instructions do not name or approve a third-party cable clip. Generic outdoor cable clips or fasteners may help secure a run, but select them for the surface and conditions rather than assuming a particular accessory is manufacturer-approved.

Connect the LIV+ 2 app
For app control, use Thermacell’s LIV+ 2 app on a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Follow this setup sequence:
- Install the LIV+ 2 app and register.
- Add a system and choose Wi-Fi setup.
- Scan the QR code on the hub.
- Select the 2.4 GHz network and enter its password.
- Wait for setup to complete.
The app provides schedules and timers, notifications, refill-life monitoring, shared access, and firmware updates. Thermacell says basic repellency does not require app connectivity, but app features and firmware updates do.
Understand the repeller status lights
Thermacell describes system states as Off, Warming, and Protected. On LIV 2.0, an orange flash alongside the operating color indicates a cap obstruction. Remove the obstruction and move the cap closed. After power-off, the units show a blue chase during cool-down until the heater cools and the cap closes. Thermacell LIV support
Check availability and get a site-specific layout
Thermacell says LIV 2.0 is available through professional installers, with configuration and price varying by property. Its product page describes availability exclusively through professional installers; its June 2, 2026 launch announcement says the system is available nationwide through them.
