Set the laptop to its native resolution, choose a refresh rate Windows actually offers, and enable HDR only if Windows reports support for HDR games and apps. The exact controls depend on the laptop model: for example, ASUS lists its 2026 ROG Strix SCAR 18 with a 3840 × 2400 16:10 Mini LED display and up to 240Hz, while 120Hz is the default in several GPU modes. Use the steps below as a model-aware guide, not a universal menu walkthrough.
Check what your exact laptop display supports
Before changing settings, look up the full laptop model and SKU on its manufacturer’s specifications page. Check native resolution, supported refresh rates, HDR capability, panel type, and any GPU-mode requirements. An 18-inch screen described as “4K” may use a 16:10 resolution rather than 16:9: ASUS lists the 2026 ROG Strix SCAR 18 at 3840 × 2400 (WQUXGA), not 3840 × 2160. ASUS also lists up to 240Hz, 3ms, 100% DCI-P3, and more than 2,000 dimming zones; these are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (2026) specifications
Do not assume your laptop has the same resolution, refresh-rate options, or HDR features. Windows’ available modes and the manufacturer’s utility can also change with the selected GPU mode or other system settings.
How do I set my gaming laptop to 120Hz?
- Set the native resolution. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display and select the display’s recommended, native resolution if it is not already selected.
- Choose the refresh rate. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select 120Hz if it appears in the refresh-rate list for the selected display and resolution. Windows only offers modes available to the active configuration. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions.
- Check the manufacturer’s control app if a mode is missing. On the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (2026), ASUS says Standard, Eco, and Optimized GPU modes default to 120Hz; selecting Ultimate GPU mode in Armoury Crate enables 240Hz. This is specific to that ASUS model. An Ultimate or other high-performance profile can use more power, so switch back to a quieter or battery-oriented mode when you do not need maximum gaming performance. ASUS’s SCAR 18 specifications and GPU-mode instructions
- Verify the mode again in Windows. Return to Advanced display after changing GPU mode, resolution, display driver, or power profile. Confirm the active refresh rate rather than relying on the laptop’s advertised maximum.
A high refresh rate can make motion look smoother, but it does not guarantee that a game will render that many frames per second. For plugged-in gaming, use the highest mode your specific laptop supports if you value smooth motion and the game can take advantage of it. A lower refresh rate may suit battery-focused or quiet use better. Microsoft also notes that supported Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can limit maximum refresh rate in some games; if a game seems capped, turn DRR off as a test and check again.

Why is my laptop screen stuck at 120Hz?
- The selected GPU mode may constrain the display. Check the laptop maker’s documentation and control app. On the cited SCAR 18, 120Hz is the default in Standard, Eco, and Optimized modes, while Ultimate enables 240Hz.
- The chosen resolution may have fewer available rates. Check Advanced display after selecting the native resolution, and review the list Windows provides for that configuration.
- DRR may be affecting a game. If the system supports Dynamic Refresh Rate and a game is unexpectedly capped, disable DRR temporarily and retest.
- The panel may simply top out at 120Hz. A maximum advertised for another SKU or model does not establish what your laptop supports. Confirm the exact SKU specifications.
Choose a sensible color baseline
Start with the display’s neutral or default color profile, then judge it in the games and apps you actually use. Check whether shadow detail remains visible, bright highlights retain detail, text is easy to read, and colors do not look unnaturally saturated.
On supported ASUS laptops, Armoury Crate’s GameVisual offers scenario presets such as Default, Racing, Scenery, RTS/RPG, FPS, Cinema, Eyecare, and Vivid. Availability varies by model and software version, and presets are not proof of calibrated color accuracy. ASUS documents hardware calibration for some gaming laptops using supported X-Rite devices, including the X-Rite i1Display Pro colorimeter. A colorimeter is optional for basic display setup; verify compatibility with your exact model before buying one. ASUS GameVisual and calibration support

How do I turn on HDR for laptop games?
- Open Settings > System > Display and select the laptop’s built-in display.
- Open Settings > System > Display > HDR and inspect the capability labels. Windows distinguishes support for HDR video streaming from support for HDR games and apps. An HDR video label alone does not confirm HDR gaming support.
- If Windows reports HDR games and apps support, turn HDR on for compatible games and check the game’s own HDR setting. Results depend on the game’s HDR implementation and how the display renders it.
For HDR streaming video on a built-in display, Windows has a separate feature called “Display calibration for HDR video.” It targets the appearance of HDR video on integrated laptop screens; it is not the HDR gaming calibration app. Microsoft’s HDR video settings guidance
How do I calibrate HDR on my laptop screen?
For Windows 11 HDR games, use the optional Windows HDR Calibration app on the display you intend to play on. Its three test patterns—recommended by the HDR Gaming Interest Group (HGIG)—cover the darkest visible details, brightest visible details, and maximum display brightness. Run the app full-screen and adjust each control until the pattern reaches the visibility boundary described by the app. Use what you see on your own panel rather than copying a peak-brightness number from a different laptop. Microsoft notes that HDR-certified screens may work well without calibration, though calibration can improve consistency. Microsoft’s Windows HDR Calibration instructions

Calibration is a visual threshold-setting process, not a reason to push every control as high as possible. Avoid increasing saturation until colors look artificial. Microsoft recommends rerunning calibration after a display setup change, such as adding or replacing a display.
Should I use 4K or a higher refresh rate for gaming?
These settings serve different priorities. Keep the native 4K-class resolution when fine detail and desktop clarity matter. Choose a supported higher refresh rate when smoother motion is the priority and your game and GPU can render enough frames to benefit. If battery life, heat, or fan noise matters more, a lower refresh rate or less demanding GPU mode may be preferable. Verify the active mode in Windows after making a change.

- Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
- Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
- Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting
- ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
On a 16:10 laptop, “4K” may refer to 3840 × 2400 rather than 3840 × 2160. The 2026 ROG Strix SCAR 18 is one example, not a template for every 18-inch gaming laptop.
Use Auto HDR only if you prefer its result
Windows 11 Auto HDR can add an HDR presentation to supported older SDR games. It is optional and is not required for games with native HDR. Compare the game with Auto HDR on and off: the result depends on the content. Microsoft’s Auto HDR guidance

Adjust brightness and account for power use
Set brightness for the room where you use the laptop. If an SDR/HDR brightness-balance change does not appear in a particular app, Microsoft suggests restarting that app. HDR streaming video uses more battery when the laptop is unplugged, so consider your power needs when watching away from an outlet.
