The right way to install a VPN depends first on who provides it: for a personal subscription, use the provider’s official app or app-store listing; for work or school, follow the organization’s instructions and use its supplied profile or settings. Most personal users can install an app, sign in, approve the device’s VPN configuration request, and connect. Manual setup requires exact details from the provider or IT department—never guess a server address, protocol, or login method.
Choose the right VPN setup method
Use the setup route that matches your account and device. A provider app is usually the simplest option when the provider supports your device. A built-in client is appropriate when a provider or organization gives you the required configuration details. Browser extensions and router configurations are separate options with different coverage.
| Method | Use it when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Provider app | You have a personal VPN account and the provider supports your device. | Confirm device and operating-system compatibility, and download from the provider’s official source or an official app store. Platform-specific instructions vary by provider. ExpressVPN setup and support |
| Built-in or manual client | Your work, school, or VPN provider supplies a profile or configuration details. | You need the exact server address, VPN type, and sign-in method. Do not substitute guessed values. Microsoft’s Windows VPN instructions |
| Browser extension | You specifically want the provider’s browser-based option. | Check the provider’s documentation for which traffic it covers and what limitations apply; do not assume it is equivalent to configuring a device-wide VPN. Provider setup and support information |
| Router setup | A device cannot run a supported VPN app, or you want VPN coverage for devices connected through your home router. | Verify support for the exact router model and VPN service before changing settings or buying equipment. Router configuration is an advanced route. Router VPN setup overview |
Before you install anything
- For a personal VPN: Get installation instructions and the app from your provider’s official website or an official app store listing. Check that the provider supports your device and operating-system version.
- For work or school: Contact IT or use the organization’s onboarding instructions. It may provide an app, a profile, or the exact manual settings you need.
- For a device without an obvious app: Check the provider’s instructions for that device and its generation. A provider may support a router or another setup method instead; direct app support is not guaranteed for every TV or console.
Install a VPN app on a supported device
The names of buttons and screens differ among providers and platforms, but the usual app setup follows this sequence:
- Open the VPN provider’s official website or the device’s official app store, and download the provider’s app for your device.
- Install and open the app, then sign in with the account associated with your personal subscription or organization.
- If the operating system asks to add or approve a VPN configuration, review the prompt and approve it to let the app set up its VPN connection.
- Choose a server or the app’s automatic option, if offered, and select Connect.
- Check the app’s connection indicator. It should report that the VPN is connected. If the operating system also shows connection status, check there as well.
For exact instructions for your device, use the provider’s current platform-specific guide. Providers offer different installation paths across desktop, mobile, TV, Linux, and other devices, and their instructions are not interchangeable. See the provider’s setup and support index.

Set up a VPN manually in Windows 11

Set up a VPN on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac
For a personal subscription, start with the provider’s app and approve the operating system’s configuration request when prompted. Use manual settings only if the provider or organization supplies them and confirms they match its server and authentication setup.
Apple platforms support several VPN approaches, including IKEv2/IPsec and SSL-VPN through an appropriate app, with options and constraints that vary by platform and configuration. Features such as VPN On Demand, per-app VPN, and Always On VPN are associated with deployment or device-management requirements; they are not universal consumer switches. Connect a TV, console, or other device without a direct app
Check the VPN provider’s instructions for the exact device model or generation. Depending on the device and provider, the available method may involve a supported app, a router, a virtual router, or another provider-specific approach. Do not assume that a VPN app can be installed directly on every smart TV or console.
A VPN-compatible router can route traffic for devices connected through it, but configuration is more involved than installing an app. Before purchasing hardware or changing router settings, confirm that the VPN service supports the exact router model and setup method. Review the provider’s router setup information.

Troubleshoot a VPN that will not connect
- The app or profile is missing: Confirm that installation finished and that the VPN configuration or profile appears in the app or device settings.
- You cannot sign in: Check the credentials and account instructions supplied by the provider or IT department. For organizational access, contact IT if the sign-in still fails.
- The app opens but does not connect: Try reconnecting and check the app or operating system’s connection status.
- You see an authentication, server, or protocol error: Ask the provider or organization to verify the relevant settings. Do not guess a replacement server, protocol, or authentication method.
For Windows, the VPN settings page should show Connected after a successful connection. Other platforms and providers display status differently, so follow their current instructions.
What Windows 10 users should know in 2026
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. If your device still runs Windows 10, consult Microsoft’s current lifecycle and security guidance and consider moving to a supported operating system rather than treating VPN installation as a substitute for operating-system support.
