To reduce burn-in risk on an OLED gaming monitor, enable its pixel-shift and static-content protection features, let automatic panel maintenance finish, and avoid leaving a fixed game HUD or desktop on screen for long periods. On Windows, hide the taskbar and set the display to turn off when idle. These steps lower risk; they cannot guarantee that burn-in will never occur.

How do I prevent burn-in on my OLED gaming monitor?

Burn-in risk is associated with prolonged display of static, high-contrast content in the same place. Samsung specifically names game speedometers, crosshairs, and health bars as examples of fixed interfaces that may contribute when they remain onscreen for a prolonged time. ASUS likewise warns about prolonged static high-contrast images.

Use the monitor’s built-in safeguards and reduce unnecessary time displaying an unchanged image. The exact feature names, menu paths, and maintenance behavior vary by model, so follow your monitor’s on-screen prompts and manual.

What settings should I turn on to reduce OLED burn-in?

Enable the monitor’s panel-care features

Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and look for a section named Panel Care, Screen Protection, OLED Care, or something similar. Enable the available options for pixel movement, static-screen protection or dimming, and logo brightness adjustment or detection. These features may move pixels slightly or reduce the brightness of persistent elements; their availability and controls depend on the monitor.

  • ASUS: On the PG OLED series described by ASUS, the path is System Setup > Screen Protection. ASUS lists Screen Saver, Screen Move, and Adjust Logo Brightness there, and says Pixel Shift is enabled by default in that series. Check your particular model rather than assuming its defaults.
  • Samsung: On supported products, Pixel Shift and Adjust Logo Brightness are under Settings > All Settings > General & Privacy > Panel Care.
  • MSI: The MAG 272QP QD-OLED X24 product page describes OLED Care 2.0 functions including Pixel Shift and static-screen, taskbar, and multi-logo detection. Features vary by product.

Let automatic panel maintenance complete

When the monitor asks to optimize the screen or starts a cleaning cycle, leave it in the state specified by its prompt or manual. Do not disconnect power during an active cycle. The timing below describes particular manufacturers’ implementations, not a universal OLED schedule:

Manufacturer and described process Timing and behavior
Samsung Screen Optimization On the described monitor, it runs when the monitor is off after four or more cumulative hours of use, takes approximately 10–15 minutes, and cannot run if the power cord is disconnected. Samsung’s instructions
ASUS Pixel Cleaning For the described PG OLED series, it starts automatically when the monitor turns off and takes about six minutes; turning the monitor back on stops the process. ASUS’s instructions
MSI Pixel Refresh The MAG 272QP QD-OLED X24 page says its Pixel Refresh activates automatically if the monitor is active for more than four hours. This is a product-specific feature description. MSI product details

Automatic optimization and manual refresh are not necessarily the same function. Samsung describes Pixel Refresh as a troubleshooting option for after-images, and says it is not available on every model. Do not routinely force a lengthy manual refresh simply because the monitor is OLED; use it only as the manufacturer directs.

Reduce persistent Windows desktop elements and idle display time

Windows controls address different situations: hiding the taskbar removes one fixed desktop element, a screen saver replaces a static image during an idle interval, and a screen-off timeout or sleep stops the display from showing an unattended desktop.

  1. Hide the taskbar in Windows 11: Right-click the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, then select Automatically hide the taskbar. See Microsoft’s taskbar instructions.
  2. Set a screen saver if you want one: Microsoft says a screen saver can help avoid prolonged static imagery on OLED displays. Configure it through Windows’ screen-saver settings; options and labels can vary. See Microsoft’s screen-saver instructions.
  3. Set an idle display timeout: In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts, then choose when the screen turns off or the PC sleeps. Microsoft does not prescribe a particular OLED-specific timeout value. See Microsoft’s power settings guidance.

How should I handle games with a fixed HUD?

If a game keeps a bright health bar, crosshair, minimap, speedometer, or other interface element in one location for long sessions, enable any relevant logo or static-content protections the monitor provides. When practical, vary long periods spent on the same static interface or take breaks from it. Samsung’s examples make clear that fixed game UI is a relevant exposure pattern, but the sources do not establish a universally safe number of minutes or hours.

What if I see an after-image or persistent mark?

A temporary after-image and persistent visible burn-in are not interchangeable diagnoses. If an after-image appears, follow the monitor maker’s troubleshooting guidance; Samsung identifies Pixel Refresh as an option on models that support it. If a mark remains or you are unsure which condition you are seeing, contact the manufacturer for model-specific guidance. A refresh cycle should not be treated as a promise to repair permanent damage.

What should I check when comparing monitors?

For long gaming or desktop sessions, compare the actual panel-care controls, how automatic maintenance works, and the warranty terms for the exact model and region. For example, MSI’s MAG 272QP QD-OLED X24 page lists OLED Care 2.0 features and states a three-year OLED-panel warranty including burn-in coverage. That statement applies to the cited product listing; verify current local terms and conditions before relying on it. It does not establish coverage for other MSI monitors or other regions.
