What Playwright MCP does—and what it does not
Playwright MCP connects an MCP client—such as VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, or Claude Desktop—to Playwright browser automation. The assistant can use structured accessibility snapshots to identify page elements and request actions such as navigation, clicks, form entry, screenshots, and network mocking. The browser executes those actions; the assistant chooses what to do based on the tools and page information it receives.
This is useful for interactive browser workflows: checking that a page loads, exercising a form, or stepping through a test scenario with an assistant. It is not, by itself, a test plan or a guarantee that an application behaves correctly. You still need to specify what the assistant should verify and how to judge the result. The server’s core browser automation is always available; optional capability groups add other tools.
For a first setup, use the client-launched stdio configuration below. It is the simplest way to run the server on a local workstation. Choose HTTP or a remote browser connection only if you need to separate the client and browser processes or connect to a browser managed elsewhere.

Prerequisites and standard setup
Before you configure the client
- Install Node.js 20 or newer.
- Use an MCP-compatible client, for example VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, or Claude Desktop.
- Allow the server to download its browser on first use. The browser is downloaded automatically when needed.
Playwright MCP’s standard launch command is npx @playwright/mcp@latest. Add it to the MCP server configuration used by your client:

}Save the configuration in the location your MCP client uses for server definitions, then restart or reload the client if it does not detect the server immediately. Configuration locations and reload controls vary by client, so use that client’s MCP settings rather than assuming one universal file path. VS Code also supports adding the server with code --add-mcp; in Cursor, add it through the MCP settings. With Claude Code, the documented command is:

The first launch may take longer while the browser is downloaded. Once the client reports that the server is connected, try a small, reversible task before using it on a site with real accounts or consequential actions.
Verify the connection with a smoke test
- Connect or reload the Playwright MCP server in your client.
- Ask the assistant: “Navigate to https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc and add a few todo items.”
- Check that it navigates to the page, returns an accessibility snapshot, identifies the textbox, and enters the requested items.
This verifies the basic chain: the client can call the MCP server, the server can launch and control its browser, and the assistant can use page information to interact with a control. It is a connectivity check, not a comprehensive browser test. For a real workflow, give the assistant explicit expected outcomes—for example, the confirmation text or changed state you expect—and inspect the result rather than treating successful clicks as proof of success.
Choose the browser lifecycle and execution mode
Playwright MCP runs headed by default, meaning the browser is visible. Add --headless to run without a visible browser window. Select a browser with --browser=<name>; supported names in the setup options are chrome, firefox, webkit, and msedge.

Other controls include --viewport-size, --device, proxy flags, and a JSON configuration file. Use them when a test depends on a particular viewport, device profile, or network route. The available setup information does not specify every flag’s syntax or all configuration-file fields; check the installed server’s supported options before adding unverified keys.
Reuse login state or attach to an existing browser
Persistent profile
The persistent profile retains cookies and login state, which can avoid signing in during every run. Use this deliberately: the profile may contain access to real accounts. If a test must start unauthenticated, use --isolated instead of carrying prior browser state forward.
Saved storage state
Use --storage-state when you want to preload saved state rather than depend on a profile left over from earlier runs. This is helpful for repeatable authenticated workflows. Treat the saved state as sensitive because it can include credentials or session material; restrict access to it and avoid putting it in a shared configuration or repository.
CDP and extension attachment
To attach to an existing Chrome or Edge channel, use --cdp-endpoint=chrome. To connect to a Chromium CDP endpoint, use a URL such as --cdp-endpoint=http://localhost:9222. If the browser is exposed as a Playwright server, use --endpoint=ws://localhost:3000/. The port numbers here are examples from the supported endpoint forms, not claims that a browser server is automatically running there.
Use --extension to attach through the browser extension to existing Chrome or Edge tabs and installed extensions. This mode is particularly relevant when the workflow depends on an existing SSO session, two-factor authentication, or an installed browser extension. Unlike launching an isolated browser, attachment gives the MCP server access to the browser session and tabs you choose to use, so only connect it to trusted clients and sessions.

Run Playwright MCP as an HTTP server
The standard configuration has the MCP client start the server as a local process using stdio. For a container, IDE worker, or separately managed browser process, you can start the server in HTTP mode instead:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931Configure the client to connect to http://localhost:8931/mcp. The server also supports --host, allowed-host controls, and a heartbeat timeout for HTTP sessions. The documented default heartbeat timeout is five seconds; this is an operational session setting, not a browser performance measurement.
HTTP changes the process and connection model: the MCP client connects to a running server rather than launching it as its stdio child. It does not make an unsafe server safe to expose. Keep the endpoint limited to the clients and hosts that need it, use the allowed-host controls appropriately, and do not expose an unauthenticated endpoint to an untrusted network. The available setup information does not establish an authentication mechanism, so do not assume that the HTTP transport itself provides one.

Enable only the capabilities your workflow needs
Core browser automation is always enabled. Optional groups can be enabled with --caps=network,storage,testing,vision,pdf,devtools, or through the equivalent environment-variable or configuration-file setting. These groups expand the available tool surface; they are not required for the basic navigation-and-interaction smoke test.
- network: choose when the workflow needs network-related tools such as network mocking.
- storage: choose when the task needs browser storage operations.
- testing: enable for testing-oriented workflows.
- vision: enable when visual capabilities are needed.
- pdf: enable for PDF-related browser tasks.
- devtools: enable when the workflow needs developer-tools capabilities.
Enable only the groups that serve the task. A smaller capability surface gives the assistant fewer tools to consider and reduces context overhead. If a requested action is unavailable, first check whether the relevant optional group is enabled before changing browser or transport settings.

Security: treat the server as code execution authority
Microsoft’s Playwright setup documentation warns: “This tool runs arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is RCE-equivalent — only enable it for trusted MCP clients.” In practical terms, an MCP client with access to this server can ask it to execute browser actions and arbitrary JavaScript in the server process. Treat adding the server to an assistant as granting meaningful execution authority, not as enabling a harmless page viewer.

- Limit who can start or connect to the server, especially when using HTTP or a shared machine.
- Do not expose an unauthenticated HTTP listener to a network you do not control.
- Use isolated contexts for tasks that should not inherit personal cookies or sessions.
- Protect persistent profiles and saved storage state as sensitive account access.
- Be cautious when directing an assistant to interact with production accounts or perform irreversible actions.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The client does not show the Playwright server
Check that the JSON is valid and that the entry is under mcpServers with command set to npx and the argument @playwright/mcp@latest. Reload or restart the client after editing its MCP configuration. In clients with a dedicated MCP settings screen, confirm that the server is enabled and that the saved entry matches the command.
The server starts, but the browser is not ready
The browser downloads automatically on first use, so allow for that initial setup and check the client or server output for launch errors. Confirm that Node.js is version 20 or newer. If startup still fails, remove extra flags temporarily and retry the standard configuration; this helps distinguish a basic install problem from an invalid browser, proxy, or endpoint option.
The assistant cannot use a requested tool
Core automation should handle basic navigation and interaction. For network mocking or another optional capability, verify that its group is included in --caps or the equivalent setting. Start with the smallest useful capability list, then add only the missing group.
The site appears logged out or has unexpected account state
Check whether the run is using an isolated context, a persistent profile, or preloaded storage state. An isolated context will not reuse a persistent profile’s cookies. For a repeatable test, preload the intended state; for an existing interactive session, consider CDP or extension attachment. Do not solve this by indiscriminately reusing a personal profile if the test should be independent.

The HTTP client cannot connect
Confirm the server is running on the port you configured and that the client uses the MCP path /mcp, for example http://localhost:8931/mcp. If connecting from a separate container or machine, localhost refers to that environment, not necessarily the host running the server; configure the host and allowed-host settings for the intended topology. Keep access restricted rather than opening the listener broadly to make a connection succeed.
