Set up the iPhone with the person, not for them: identify which actions are difficult, try one accessibility change at a time, and keep only the settings they find helpful. Start at Settings > Accessibility. For touch problems, try Touch Accommodations; for difficult gestures or button presses, try AssistiveTouch; for less touchscreen use, consider Voice Control, Siri, Dictation, or another input method. Apple documents these as device features, not as condition-specific treatment or a configuration that works for everyone.
Start with the actions the person wants to make easier
Parkinson’s and arthritis do not affect everyone in the same way. Ask which iPhone tasks are frustrating or tiring before changing settings. The difficulty might be accidental taps, holding a finger on the screen, swiping, multi-finger gestures, pressing physical buttons, or typing. Apple describes relevant needs as “hand tremors, dexterity, or fine motor control” rather than prescribing settings by diagnosis.
Keep familiar apps and routines where possible. Change one thing at a time, then let the person try it during ordinary use. If a change makes another task harder, adjust it or turn it off.

- Hold Duration: changes how long a touch must last before the iPhone recognizes it. Apple also documents configuring swipe gestures with Hold Duration.
- Tap Assistance: can ignore taps and swipes made within a configured duration. This may help with unintended input, but it can also cause an intended touch to be ignored; test it with the person’s usual tasks.
Apple provides options to adjust, recalibrate, or reset these accommodations. Use them if the initial setup does not feel right rather than treating the first configuration as final.
Adjust other touch behaviors only when they cause trouble
The Touch settings also include controls for Haptic Touch duration, Tap to Wake, and Shake to Undo. Consider these only if the associated behavior is a problem. For example, turning off Shake to Undo may help if an unintended shake repeatedly triggers the undo prompt; it is not a required setting for Parkinson’s or arthritis. See Apple’s touch-response guide for the available controls.

Use AssistiveTouch when gestures or buttons are difficult
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch. AssistiveTouch puts common actions in an onscreen menu and can provide alternatives to gestures or hardware-button presses. It also supports assigning actions to menu-button taps or presses and creating custom gestures. Apple describes these options in Use AssistiveTouch on iPhone.
AssistiveTouch can also work with supported pointer devices, including Bluetooth or USB mice, trackpads, and game controllers. Apple describes compatible adaptive accessories such as a joystick. Check that a specific accessory works with the person’s iPhone before buying it; no particular device is required to use the built-in menu.

Apple’s mobility accessibility overview describes the options.
- Voice Control: a spoken way to control the iPhone.
- Siri: lets the person use voice for supported requests.

Use Assistive Access only if a simpler interface is wanted
Assistive Access is an optional iPhone experience designed for people with cognitive disabilities. It offers larger onscreen items and focused navigation; it is not a Parkinson’s or arthritis setting. It may be appropriate if the person themselves wants fewer choices or a more focused interface.

Set up accessibility during initial iPhone setup
If the iPhone has not yet been configured, Apple makes some accessibility features available during initial setup. For an iPhone that is already set up, use Settings > Accessibility instead. See Apple’s guide to accessibility features during iPhone setup.
Review the setup after the person has tried it
After using the phone in familiar situations, ask what became easier and what became harder. Adjust or reset Touch Accommodations, revisit AssistiveTouch choices, or remove an option that does not help. The goal is a setup the person prefers; Apple’s feature descriptions do not establish medical outcomes or a universally best configuration.
