To stream from an Ubuntu 24.04 cloud VM to YouTube Live, install FFmpeg, copy the event’s current RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, configure an encoder profile that matches your source, and test the feed before relying on it. The right VM depends on the video source, resolution, frame rate, encoding preset, and sustained outbound bandwidth—not just its Indian region.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu Server 24.04 VM with SSH access and outbound network connectivity.
- A YouTube Live event and its server URL and stream key.
- A video source available to the VM, such as a file stored on it. A headless VM does not automatically have access to your local camera or capture hardware.
- Enough sustained CPU capacity and upload bandwidth for the chosen encoding profile.
This guide uses a prerecorded file for its example command. Live camera, capture-card, or other real-time inputs require an FFmpeg input configuration appropriate to that device and environment.
Choose an Indian cloud region and VM
Examples of Indian regions include AWS Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2), with Hyderabad marked opt-in in AWS’s regions list: AWS Regions. Google Cloud’s location listings include Mumbai (asia-south1); the Cloud Workstations locations page is specific to Workstations and does not guarantee Compute Engine machine availability there.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the chosen VM product’s own region and machine availability before provisioning. No single VM size or provider can be recommended without knowing the source, video profile, encoder preset, concurrent workloads, and required upload capacity. Compare sustained CPU performance, stable outbound throughput and egress billing, storage for any source file kept on the VM, and your location or administrative needs. The cited region lists do not establish current capacity, bandwidth guarantees, or provider pricing.

Create a YouTube Live event and get its RTMPS credentials
-
Create or select the event in YouTube Live Control Room.
-
Copy that event’s current server URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS endpoint where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; RTMPS encrypts delivery to YouTube using TLS/SSL. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS and YouTube’s stream setup instructions.
-
Keep the key secret. Do not put a real key in a public example, screenshot, repository, shell history, or support log. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube’s live-stream settings.

If the connection appears to reach a server but stalls or times out, confirm that the destination is the RTMPS endpoint and that the client is not attempting cleartext RTMP. Google’s developer documentation identifies an RTMP/RTMPS protocol mismatch as a possible cause of timeout-like behavior: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Choose the encoding settings
Follow YouTube’s current encoder table for the event’s resolution, frame rate, and codec; settings can change. Its H.264 recommendations include:
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 values, not a guarantee that a particular VM or internet connection can sustain them. Use YouTube’s full table for other resolutions and codecs: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Video codec: YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Check that the FFmpeg build has the encoder you plan to use.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR) as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval, not exceeding four seconds. At 30 fps, a GOP of 60 frames corresponds to two seconds; adjust the GOP to the chosen frame rate.
- Audio: the guidance supports AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- Frame rate and image: YouTube allows up to 60 fps. Its recommended advanced SDR settings include progressive scan and Rec. 709 color. Match the output to the source and event configuration.
- Bandwidth: check sustained upload capacity and leave headroom. Do not set the stream bitrate equal to a best-case speed-test peak.
Send a prerecorded file with FFmpeg
This is an illustrative starting pattern for a looping file, not a tested command or a promise that every VM can encode it in real time. Replace the input path and destination with your own. Set resolution, frame rate, GOP, and bitrate to match the source, YouTube’s current guidance, and the event. The example uses H.264 at 4 Mbps; that bitrate aligns with YouTube’s recommendation for 720p30 H.264, but the command does not itself scale or cap the input to 720p30.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'RTMPS_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY'
At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds. If the source uses another frame rate, calculate the GOP for the desired interval. The example assumes the FFmpeg build has libx264. Confirm with ffmpeg -encoders; if it is unavailable, use an enabled encoder and verify its options and performance. Substitute the exact RTMPS destination format supplied for your YouTube event, and do not paste a live stream key into public material.

The command uses real-time input pacing (-re) and loops the file (-stream_loop -1). It is not suitable unchanged for every live input. A camera or capture source needs an input option and device access suited to that hardware; a local camera is not automatically passed through to a cloud VM.
Test the stream and monitor it
-
Rehearse with representative movement and audio before the event. YouTube recommends pre-event testing and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
-
Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Confirm the received resolution and frame rate, audio, image orientation and aspect ratio, and that the feed is stable.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Connection stalls or times out | Whether the destination and FFmpeg output use RTMPS as expected by the event. | Copy the current endpoint from Live Control Room and check for an RTMP/RTMPS mismatch. |
| YouTube does not receive a feed | That the event is selected, the current server URL and key are used, and the VM can make outbound connections. | Copy the event’s current credentials again, check provider network rules, and inspect FFmpeg’s error output. |
| Stream health warns of insufficient bitrate | Configured video and audio rates against stable VM upload capacity. | Measure sustained capacity, leave headroom, and lower the selected profile if necessary. |
| Video stutters or falls behind | FFmpeg processing speed and VM CPU load, particularly with software encoding. | Try a less demanding supported preset or lower resolution/frame rate, then rehearse with the actual source. |
| Video appears with unexpected dimensions, orientation, or frame rate | Source properties, FFmpeg output options, and the event’s received stream details. | Match the output profile to the source and event; add scaling or frame-rate conversion only when needed. |
| No audio, distorted audio, or a YouTube audio warning | Whether the input contains an audio stream and whether the chosen audio codec and parameters are supported. | Inspect the input streams, set an appropriate AAC or MP3 output, and verify it in a rehearsal. |
| Stream key may have been exposed | Whether the key appeared in public code, screenshots, logs, or shell history. | Rotate the key in YouTube’s settings and update the running configuration securely. |
Copyright and YouTube Live requirements
Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permission to use. FFmpeg can transmit a file, but it does not grant distribution rights or determine whether a channel qualifies for YouTube monetization. Review YouTube’s current copyright and channel policies for the content and use case, and test the intended material before a scheduled broadcast. This guide does not establish that reused or repetitive content is eligible for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want continuous prerecorded-video playback without administering an Ubuntu VM and FFmpeg, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service.
