To stream with FFmpeg over Airtel broadband, copy the RTMP or RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, choose an encoding bitrate your actual upload connection can sustain, then send the video to YouTube with FFmpeg. Airtel broadband alone does not guarantee a particular upload speed: test the connection you will use and leave bandwidth headroom before choosing resolution and frame rate.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available and access to its Live Control Room.
- An installed FFmpeg build with the video and audio encoders you plan to use. Encoder availability varies by build.
- A video file for the example below, or the appropriate device-specific input settings if streaming a camera or capture device.
- A stable internet connection. Measure upload speed on the computer and network path you intend to use; download speed is not a substitute.
YouTube Live uses an ingest URL and stream key. FFmpeg’s documented pattern for sending a file in real time is RTMP with an FLV output. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP; use the exact endpoint shown in Live Control Room and confirm your FFmpeg build supports that protocol. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to copy the URL and key.
1. Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the scheduled or live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server or stream URL and the stream key shown for that stream.
- Keep the key private. Do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, terminal recording, or support post. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio before streaming again.
The URL and key are credentials for sending a broadcast to your channel. Do not assume an endpoint or key from an old tutorial is the correct one for your stream. Use what Studio currently displays. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide for stream management and key controls.
2. Measure Airtel upload speed and choose a realistic profile
Run an upload speed test from the same computer, router connection, and Wi-Fi location you will use for the broadcast. If possible, test at a representative busy time. A brief peak is not proof that the connection can sustain a stream for its full duration. YouTube says upload capacity must exceed the total stream bitrate and recommends keeping 20% spare capacity; other people or devices sharing the connection use some of that capacity too. YouTube’s streaming tips cover upload bandwidth and shared use.

Airtel’s 2024–25 annual report describes its fixed-line and high-speed broadband services in India, but it does not establish an individual subscriber’s upload performance. Your plan name, city, router, Wi-Fi conditions, and current network load matter; select a bitrate from your measured, stable uplink, not from the provider name or a plan’s advertised download figure.
YouTube’s H.264 live bitrate guidance
The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 guidance, not Airtel guarantees. “Minimum” is not a promise of stable delivery; recommended bitrate is a quality target. Preserve upload headroom above the stream’s actual total bitrate, including audio.

These values apply to H.264. YouTube’s table gives different bitrate ranges for H.265/HEVC and AV1, so do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs. YouTube also lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table when choosing codec, frame rate, and resolution together.

Wi-Fi or Ethernet
If you are on Wi-Fi, test at the computer’s actual streaming location. As a troubleshooting comparison, connect the computer to the router by Ethernet if available and test again. A wired connection is optional, not a YouTube requirement, and cannot make an ISP uplink faster than its available capacity.
3. Send a video file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows the basic real-time file-to-RTMP structure as ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. For YouTube, replace the example destination with the exact ingest URL and key copied from Live Control Room. The following is an editable H.264/AAC example for a 30 fps source, not a guaranteed command for every FFmpeg build or connection:

-f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/REPLACE_WITH_STREAM_KEY"Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the destination with Studio’s endpoint and your key. The shown 5 Mbps video target aligns with YouTube’s H.264 minimum for 1080p30, not its 14 Mbps recommendation. Use it only if your source, encoder, and connection can deliver it steadily; the bitrate total also includes audio. Set the keyframe cadence to roughly two seconds at the selected frame rate: 60 frames at 30 fps, or 120 at 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it must not exceed four seconds.

-re reads a file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. -f flv selects the container expected by this RTMP-style output pattern. -b:v sets the video bitrate target; -maxrate and -bufsize constrain and smooth the rate behavior in this example. -r 30 sets output frame rate; use a value appropriate to the intended profile and source. The example assumes libx264 and AAC are present in the build; if FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder, use a build with that encoder or choose one it supports.

For a live camera or capture device, FFmpeg input arguments depend on operating system and device, so this file command cannot be pasted unchanged. Keep the output-side requirements—compatible codecs, suitable bitrate and keyframes, and the correct YouTube destination—but obtain the correct device input syntax for your platform.

4. Test the stream and monitor stream health
- When practical, start a private or unlisted test stream before a public event.
- Use video with motion and representative audio, rather than testing only a static frame or silent clip.
- Check Live Control Room to confirm YouTube detects the expected resolution and frame rate and reports healthy ingest.
- During the broadcast, watch stream health and respond to the diagnostic messages shown in Live Control Room.
YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health. A passing speed test only describes that test moment; it does not guarantee sustained upload performance for the entire event. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for test and health advice.

Airtel is the access provider in this scenario, but the available evidence does not identify Airtel-specific ingest failure modes. Diagnose the endpoint and key, local FFmpeg support, router or firewall path, measured uplink stability, and YouTube’s own error and stream-health messages before attributing a failure to the ISP.

Using FFmpeg does not change YouTube’s content rules. Make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the video, music, and other material you send; a successful ingest test does not establish that content is permitted. YouTube may also apply its channel monetization and reused-content policies separately from whether a stream connects. Review the rules that apply to your channel and content before scheduling or monetizing a broadcast.
