You can set up a Raspberry Pi as a headless YouTube encoder by preparing Raspberry Pi OS Lite with Wi-Fi or Ethernet and SSH in Raspberry Pi Imager, then connecting remotely, installing FFmpeg, and sending a local video to YouTube Live. The steps below include a test-first FFmpeg template; check the installed build and the Pi’s performance before relying on it unattended. YouTube Live eligibility is account-dependent, so confirm your channel can go live in YouTube Studio before you begin.
What you need before starting
- A Raspberry Pi with a compatible power supply and a microSD card.
- Another computer to run Raspberry Pi Imager and prepare the card.
- A network connection at the Pi’s location. Ethernet or Wi-Fi can work; check that your exact Pi model and wireless adapter support the Wi-Fi band you plan to use.
- A local video file that you are entitled to stream, with enough storage space on the card or attached drive.
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to start a live stream, plus access to YouTube Studio.
- A second device for checking the YouTube preview and playback.
For a long-running stream in India, plan for power and internet availability at the Pi’s location. This setup does not make a household connection or power supply interruption-proof.
Prepare Raspberry Pi OS for headless access
Do the initial setup before putting the card in the Pi. Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi Imager for installing the OS and configuring remote access; its headless guide recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite. See Raspberry Pi’s headless setup instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Install and open Raspberry Pi Imager on another computer, then select your Pi model and Raspberry Pi OS Lite.
- Open the Imager customization settings. Set a username and a strong password, configure Wi-Fi credentials if you will use wireless, and enable SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect for remote access. Keep a record of the username and password somewhere private.
- Write the image to the microSD card, safely eject it, insert it in the Pi, and connect power and network. An Ethernet cable can simplify first connection if the Pi is near your router; wireless performance depends on your router, signal, and the board or adapter.
- Find the Pi’s address or hostname from your router’s connected-device list or your known local hostname method. From another computer, connect over SSH, for example:
ssh your-user@raspberrypi.local. Replaceyour-userand the hostname with the values for your setup. If name resolution fails, use the Pi’s local IP address instead.
Raspberry Pi also documents manual boot-partition files for enabling SSH and setting a user, but Imager customization is the simpler main route because it handles credentials and network setup together. Do not rely on obsolete default username/password instructions. With Raspberry Pi OS Lite, VNC is not the remote-access option; use SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect.

Check YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and confirm that the channel can start a live stream. If live streaming is unavailable for the account, resolve that through YouTube before building an unattended setup.
- In Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and copy the server URL and stream key for the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this connection flow.
- Treat the key as a password. YouTube says stream keys are like a stream’s password and address: they identify where the encoder sends the feed and let YouTube accept it. Never publish the real key in a script, screenshot, shell history you share, or source control. If it may have leaked, reset it in Live Control Room. See Manage live stream settings.
Use the RTMPS server address shown for your stream when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt data to and through Google’s servers; FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.
Install FFmpeg and inspect the Pi build
- Connect to the Pi over SSH and install FFmpeg from Raspberry Pi OS’s current package repository:
sudo apt update, thensudo apt install ffmpeg. - Check the installed version with
ffmpeg -version. Inspect available encoders withffmpeg -encodersand check the installed help or manual for input looping support:ffmpeg -h full. Package versions and compiled-in encoders can differ. - Confirm the file path and its streams before sending it:
ffprobe /path/to/video.mp4. Note whether it has audio, its codecs, resolution, and frame rate. Ifffprobeis unavailable, check whether your package provides it or inspect the file using another trusted tool.
FFmpeg’s command structure places input options before the relevant -i, followed by output options and the output URL. The -stream_loop -1 input option is commonly used for indefinite looping, but verify that your installed build supports it and place it before the input it applies to. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and the local help output.
Choose an encoding approach and bitrate
YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). These are YouTube’s current Help recommendations, accessed 2026-10-03, not a guarantee that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode a given format or resolution in real time.

| H.264 example target | YouTube recommended bitrate | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | Use only if the Pi can sustain encoding and the upstream connection can reliably carry the stream. |
| 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | A more conservative starting target when testing a lower-resolution stream. |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | A low-bandwidth target; check that the resulting picture is suitable for the channel. |
These are recommendations, not minimums or measured Pi performance figures. YouTube advises choosing settings that suit the connection and testing upload bitrate. Leave headroom above the selected video bitrate for audio and network variation. Begin conservatively, then check FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health with the same media and network you intend to use.
Copying streams versus transcoding
Copying compatible streams can reduce CPU work, but it is not a universal shortcut: source codecs, audio presence, timestamps, container details, and YouTube ingest requirements all matter. Transcoding gives control over output codec, size, bitrate, and keyframes, but uses more processing. No model-independent Pi performance result establishes that a given board can transcode a particular resolution in real time. Check available encoders and benchmark the exact board rather than assuming hardware acceleration or a sustained frame rate.
Build a test command and verify the stream
The following is a starting template, not a guaranteed command for every file, FFmpeg build, or Pi. Replace the file path and server address with your own. Replace <STREAM_KEY> locally with the private key; do not publish the substituted command. The example transcodes to H.264/AAC at 720p30 and 3 Mbps, a YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate for that target. It assumes an input with audio and an installed FFmpeg build with the libx264 encoder.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p -vf scale=-2:720 -r 30 -b:v 3000k -minrate 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_SERVER/YOUR_PATH/<STREAM_KEY>"
-rereads a file at real-time pace rather than pushing it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1requests indefinite input looping; verify its support and option placement in your installed FFmpeg.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream and-map 0:a:0selects the first audio stream. If the file has no audio, remove the audio map and audio options; do not assume silence will be added automatically.- The video options request H.264, 720p height, 30 fps, CBR-style bitrate limits, and a 60-frame GOP (two seconds at 30 fps). Scaling and encoding can be CPU-intensive. If the encoder is missing or the Pi cannot keep up, lower the target or investigate an encoder available in that build.
- The output uses FLV packaging for RTMP-family ingest. Use the full RTMPS URL and key format provided by YouTube for your stream; do not assume the example server path is universal.
Before leaving it running, start a test and inspect both FFmpeg’s terminal output and Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indicators. Check playback from a separate device. Test representative motion and audio, not only a static or silent opening frame. If you want to copy streams instead of transcoding, only do so after confirming that the source streams and container work for the chosen ingest; the command above deliberately encodes instead.
Keep the process running and recover remotely
For a first test, run FFmpeg in an SSH session and keep the session open while you check YouTube. Closing the terminal may end a foreground process, so do not treat this as unattended operation. A systemd service with restart behavior and logs is a common operational approach, but service details depend on the command, credentials handling, and OS configuration; test the unit and recovery path before relying on it.

- Store any script or service configuration containing a key in a private location and restrict its permissions, for example with
chmod 600. Avoid placing the key in a publicly shared script or repository. - Use
systemctl status your-serviceandjournalctl -u your-serviceto inspect a service named by you; substitute its actual unit name. - If the stream stops, SSH in, inspect the process or service logs, check network access and YouTube’s stream-health display, and restart only after identifying the failure where possible.
- If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the private configuration on the Pi.
A restart policy can relaunch a failed process, but it cannot fix a broken network, unavailable power, incompatible source, or invalid key. Confirm recovery behavior by testing a planned restart while someone can observe the stream.
