To stream a podcast from an Indian Linux VPS to YouTube Live, use FFmpeg to send both audio and video over YouTube’s RTMPS ingest connection. Get the ingest address and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, configure a supported encoder with constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, then test the real VPS-to-YouTube route before scheduling the broadcast. A VPS’s location or advertised network speed alone does not establish that it can sustain your chosen stream settings.
What you need before configuring FFmpeg
- A Linux VPS with enough CPU capacity for your chosen encoding settings and sustained outbound network capacity to YouTube.
- An FFmpeg build that supports the input format, codecs, and secure streaming protocol you plan to use. Check the installed build and the FFmpeg protocol documentation; support depends on how FFmpeg was built.
- A YouTube Live broadcast and the corresponding ingest URL and stream key.
- A podcast audio source and a video component. A video live ingest needs video as well as audio; do not assume an audio-only source is sufficient.
This setup does not require an India-specific VPS provider. No provider, Indian route, sustained-bandwidth policy, or price is established here. Evaluate the exact VPS plan and test its path to YouTube rather than assuming that an Indian server will perform better for your audience or ingest.
Create the YouTube broadcast and get its ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to use.
- Copy the ingest address and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the viewer-facing broadcast from the encoder’s stream feed; see Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
- Keep the stream key secret, as you would a password. Do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, terminal transcripts, or public logs. The API describes the stream name and ingestion addresses at LiveStreams.
- Use the primary ingest address unless you have a reason to configure the backup address. Depending on the encoder setup, enter the address and stream name separately or combine them in the required form, commonly
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME.
A stream is the encoder feed; a broadcast is the event viewers watch. For recurring shows scheduled one after another, a stream can be reused. Separate streams may suit shows with different settings or events that can run at the same time.
Choose secure ingest and encoder settings
Use RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it
YouTube recommends RTMPS. Google for Developers describes it as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” The connection must use the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube ingest host and path, and port 443. A wrong protocol, endpoint, path, port, or SSL configuration can prevent connection. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Match the codec, bitrate, and keyframes to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds—no more than four seconds. Confirm that the specific ingest workflow and Live Control Room accept your selected codec. The current recommendations and resolution/bitrate table are on YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page.
Choose a resolution and bitrate from YouTube’s table, then check that the VPS can sustain that outbound rate with headroom. YouTube advises testing the connection before going live. A provider’s headline port speed is not proof of sustained delivery to YouTube from your particular server and route.

Set podcast audio deliberately
For stereo audio, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, its page lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps. Use the audio mode that matches your source and production; do not upmix stereo merely to use a larger setting.
Build the audio-led video presentation
FFmpeg must send video alongside the podcast audio for a video live stream. A static cover image or a waveform are possible presentation approaches, but the official references cited here do not validate a particular FFmpeg filter recipe or universal command for combining them. Before writing a production command, verify the exact input/container combination and filters against your installed FFmpeg build. Keep the command’s destination private if it contains the stream key. Prefer an environment variable or a restricted-permission configuration file over placing a real key in a shared script or a command that may be retained in shell history or logs. Do not use a live key in examples.
Preflight the VPS-to-YouTube stream
- Confirm the VPS can resolve and connect to the correct YouTube RTMPS host on port 443, and verify that the FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol and codecs.
- Start FFmpeg with representative podcast audio and the intended video presentation, using the correct ingest address and protected stream key.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room while the encoder is running. Wait for stream health and inspect any warnings before starting the viewer-facing event.
- Test for long enough to expose unstable outbound delivery, and check that the audio and video remain present. Repeat the check from the actual VPS and route you plan to use.
- During the event, monitor FFmpeg output and YouTube’s health messages so you can identify an ingest or configuration problem promptly.
YouTube’s stream health diagnostics can flag low or high bitrate, unsupported codecs, mismatched settings, keyframe intervals that are too long, and missing audio or video. Its API documents these health categories under LiveStreams.

Troubleshoot common ingest problems
