To set up an Eye-Fi card, configure its Wi-Fi network and transfer destination using instructions for that specific card, then enable Eye-Fi uploading in your camera if the model supports it. The camera’s menu usually controls whether uploading is enabled; it may not let you choose where photos go. Eye-Fi is legacy hardware, and its wireless support and related services reached their announced end-of-support period in 2016, so old setup instructions do not guarantee that wireless transfers still work.
Before you start: check the card, camera, and service status
Eye-Fi setup varies by card generation and camera. Find the exact card model and camera model, then use their manuals rather than assuming that a menu path or transfer method applies universally. Keep expectations realistic: SanDisk reported that Eye-Fi announced on June 30, 2016 that it would stop supporting several products, including SanDisk Eye-Fi SD cards. SanDisk identified September 16, 2016 as the date after which dependent services would be shut down and recommended stopping wireless use by then. SanDisk’s support notice is a historical lifecycle notice, not confirmation that any particular card or service remains operational today.
How to set up an Eye-Fi card
- Identify your models. Check the card label and camera manual for the exact Eye-Fi generation, supported features, and menu instructions.
- Configure the card’s network and destination. Use the card-generation-specific instructions and software, if available. For the Sony ILCA-99M2, Sony separates this from the camera menu: the network or destination is set on the card. Sony’s guide describes the camera’s upload setting separately.
- Insert the card in a supported slot and enable upload. On the Sony ILCA-99M2, Eye-Fi works only in slot 1. On the Nikon D3500, the setup menu can enable or disable upload when an Eye-Fi card is inserted; Nikon notes that this does not mean the camera supports every Eye-Fi feature. See the Nikon D3500 manual for that model’s instructions.
- Take a still photo and check transfer status. The trigger differs among cameras. CASIO says some models begin communication after a photo is taken or when powered on with untransferred images; others require selecting Eye-Fi in playback and pressing SET. Consult the CASIO FAQ for model-specific behavior.
For the Sony ILCA-99M2, the documented menu path is MENU → Image (Setup) → Upload Settings. That setting controls uploading; configure the destination on the card itself.

Historically, Eye-Fi setups could send photos to a computer, a mobile device, or an online photo service. Which destination is available depends on the card generation, its software and pairing requirements, and whether the destination service still works. The sources available here do not establish that any specific Eye-Fi online service is currently operating.

For an example of a historical setup path, Doxie’s legacy guidance describes computer and mobile pairing and a direct-to-cloud option under the card’s Photos > Online settings. Doxie says that direct-cloud workflow bypasses Doxie software features and is unsupported by Doxie. This describes an older configuration, not present-day compatibility. Read Doxie’s Eye-Fi tips for that historical context.
Why an Eye-Fi card may not transfer photos
- Upload is disabled in the camera. Check the camera’s Eye-Fi or upload setting; exact labels and paths vary by model.
- The card is in an unsupported slot. The Sony ILCA-99M2 supports Eye-Fi only in slot 1.
- The Wi-Fi signal is weak or unavailable. Nikon says insufficient signal prevents upload. Check the configured network and access-point signal.
- Airplane mode or wireless restrictions are active. Nikon says airplane mode disables Eye-Fi upload. Follow the camera manual and local rules for wireless use.
- The camera has gone into standby. Nikon recommends using a longer standby timer while using Eye-Fi.
- The legacy app or destination service is unavailable. End-of-support does not necessarily identify the status of every card, app, or service today. Do not assume that changing the camera setting can restore a discontinued service.
- Another wireless device is interfering. Sony warns that other wireless devices or a poor access-point signal can affect upload. Its ILCA-99M2 also does not use power save during upload.
One model-specific caution: Nikon warns that an Eye-Fi card may emit wireless signals even when the camera’s upload control is disabled. Follow applicable wireless restrictions rather than treating that menu setting as a guarantee that the card’s radio is off.

Protect photos before troubleshooting or formatting
If the camera reports an Eye-Fi error, or a legacy app or service is unavailable, copy important photos off the card before attempting risky fixes. Nikon advises copying pictures to a computer or other storage before formatting after a persistent error. A USB SD card reader can help retrieve files from an SD card, but it does not restore Eye-Fi wireless transfer or discontinued services. Follow the camera manual’s instructions before formatting.
