Place the keyboard and mouse within easy reach, then position the monitor directly ahead at a comfortable distance with its top line at or below eye level. These are adjustable starting points, not a single posture everyone must hold: OSHA notes that no one workstation arrangement fits everyone.
Set up the chair and desk as a pair
Begin with the chair, then check how its height works with the desk and keyboard. A chair that fits your body but leaves you reaching up to type—or a desk that forces your feet off the floor—still needs adjustment.
- Adjust the chair so your lower back is supported by its lumbar area.
- Set the seat height so your feet rest flat on the floor. If the work surface cannot be lowered enough to make that possible, use a stable footrest that supports both feet.
- Choose a seat depth that supports your thighs without pressing the front edge against the backs of your knees.
- Keep enough clearance under the desk for your thighs and legs.
OSHA recommends trying a chair for comfort and fit before buying it. Adjustment range, lumbar support, seat width and depth, and compatibility with your desk height matter more than the word “ergonomic” on a product label. OSHA chair guidance explains the fit considerations.
Position the keyboard and mouse for relaxed arms
Move close enough to the desk that you can use the keyboard without reaching. Keep it directly in front of you, elbows near your body, shoulders relaxed, and wrists straight in line with your forearms. OSHA’s evaluation checklist describes forearms approximately parallel to the floor and an angle of about 90–100 degrees between the upper arm and forearm; treat that as checklist guidance, not a rigid medical rule.

Place the mouse or other pointing device beside the keyboard so frequent use does not require reaching or twisting. If the desk is too high to let you keep your arms relaxed, consider an adjustable work surface or keyboard platform. Check that the solution does not take away needed legroom. Place the monitor straight ahead
Center the monitor in front of you and set its top line at or below eye level. Choose a height and viewing angle that let you read while keeping your head and neck comfortable rather than bending forward or looking up.

OSHA gives 20–40 inches (about 50–100 cm) as a preferred monitor viewing-distance range. It is guidance, not a required fit for every person or screen: the practical test is whether you can read comfortably without leaning. Increase text size if needed to read at a suitable distance. To reduce reflected glare, reposition the display where possible, including perpendicular to a window. OSHA’s monitor guidance covers positioning and viewing distance.
Adapt the arrangement for laptops and multiple monitors
Primary-use laptop
Apply desktop workstation principles when a laptop is your primary computer. Use a separate keyboard and pointing device so you can place the screen at a comfortable height without forcing your hands into an awkward position. A stand or dock can help position the display, but OSHA does not require a particular product.

More than one monitor
Put the display you use most directly in front of you. If you use two screens equally, place them side by side to limit how far you need to turn your head. OSHA’s computer workstation guidance provides the underlying setup principles.
Recheck the setup and vary your position
Once the workstation is arranged, notice whether any part of your body has to compensate for it. Look for reaching, twisting to view the screen, raised shoulders, bent wrists, unsupported feet, or a seat edge pressing behind your knees. Adjust the component causing the problem rather than trying to hold a strained position.

OSHA advises that a workstation should allow occasional posture changes and that users should be able to alternate sitting and standing or other activities. Avoid prolonged sitting or standing. The reviewed OSHA guidance does not prescribe a universal break interval, so there is no evidence-based timer in this guidance that applies to everyone.

- Chair: Can it adjust to support your lower back and fit your seat depth and width without pressure behind the knees? Does it work with your desk height?
- Monitor stand or arm: Can it raise and angle the screen comfortably, remain stable with your monitor, and preserve a suitable viewing distance? OSHA specifies positioning goals, not a required stand design.
- Footrest: Is it stable and large enough to support both feet when chair and work-surface adjustments cannot let your feet rest flat?
- Laptop accessories: Will a separate keyboard and pointing device let you position the screen and hands independently? Check desk space and device compatibility.
OSHA’s purchasing guidance offers general factors to consider; it does not establish that a specific accessory is necessary for everyone.
