To run a 24/7 YouTube showcase of speedrun world records, you need two things: an encoder feed that stays connected to a YouTube live event, and a rights-cleared playlist of runs that are still records under their games’ current leaderboard rules. YouTube’s broadcast can remain open after its incoming video feed stops, so creating the event alone does not make the stream reliably always-on. Verify each record, get permission for every video, test the encoder, and plan how to restore the feed after an outage.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s current Help guidance for age and other account requirements, which can change.
- A YouTube live event and an encoder that sends it video and audio. OBS is one possible encoder; the reviewed guidance does not establish a required computer configuration.
- A rotation of run videos you have permission to rebroadcast, along with a process to check that each run still qualifies as a record in its specific category.
- A sustainable internet upload connection and an operator or recovery plan for checking the feed and responding to interruptions.
How to set up a 24/7 YouTube livestream
1. Check channel eligibility and create the live event
- Confirm the channel is verified and has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance for age and account requirements.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event and choose to connect an encoder. YouTube’s live-streaming system separates the broadcast (the event) from the incoming stream (the encoder feed); create the event and connect the feed rather than assuming one means the other is healthy.
- Copy the event’s stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on stream or share it publicly. Use RTMPS for YouTube ingestion where the encoder supports it.
2. Build the video feed from authorized runs
Prepare the playlist from files you hold and are allowed to use. Arrange the runs in a deliberate rotation, with useful on-screen identification such as game, category, runner name or approved anonymous label, and run time. Avoid presenting a run as a current record unless you have checked its current board and rules.
Load the rotation into your encoder or permitted playback setup, and make sure the output continues to the live event when one clip ends and the next begins. The reviewed OBS guidance establishes it as a streaming tool, but does not specify a required playlist workflow or PC specification; verify that your chosen playback and encoder setup can loop continuously before relying on it.
3. Set encoder output for a stable feed
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings as the baseline. It supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio; set encoding to constant bitrate and use a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends that keyframes not exceed four seconds. The following are its recommended H.264 bitrates for the listed resolution and frame rate—not guarantees that your computer or connection can sustain them:

Choose a resolution and frame rate your encoder and sustained upload can support. A short speed test or a brief successful start is not proof that the connection will hold the bitrate continuously. Test at the intended output settings and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
4. Test, start, and monitor
- Before announcing the channel as live, test a representative section of footage, including fast movement and the loudest expected audio. Confirm that picture and sound are present, the run transitions are clean, and text is legible.
- Start the encoder feed and verify that YouTube receives it and reports healthy stream status. Then start or confirm the live event according to the event’s state in YouTube Studio.
- During operation, monitor stream health and YouTube’s warnings. A live broadcast can remain present even after its incoming video stream has stopped, so check the actual feed rather than relying on the event appearing live.
- Write down who will respond to an outage and how they will restart the encoder or switch to a backup feed. If nobody is available around the clock, choose a setup with a recovery process you can actually operate unattended.
How to keep a speedrun world-record rotation accurate
Check the record in its actual category
There is no single title-wide “world record” for a game: results depend on the game, category, platform or version where applicable, timing method, and that board’s rules. Speedrun.com describes leaderboards as community-owned and moderator-curated. Before adding or continuing to feature a run, check the relevant leaderboard and game-specific rules, including the run’s verification state. Submission requirements vary: video or photo evidence is common, but individual boards can set different requirements.

Keep a record for every playlist item with:
- Game and exact category.
- Runner name, or the anonymous label the runner has approved.
- Time, platform or version where relevant, and timing method if the board specifies one.
- Leaderboard entry and verification state, plus the date you checked it.
- Source video and the permission basis for rebroadcasting it.
Recheck the board periodically and after a viewer or runner flags a change. If a run is beaten, removed, disputed, or no longer meets the applicable rules, update the label or remove it; do not leave a stale record claim in the rotation.

A public leaderboard entry is not permission to copy or rebroadcast the runner’s video. Speedrun.com moderation rules prohibit copying or reuploading a player’s video without permission, and allow a player to request that a run or username not be listed. Ask each rights holder for written permission that covers live rebroadcast, editing or clipping, attribution, monetization, how long the permission lasts, and how removal requests will be handled. Retain the grant and follow any conditions.

Also assess rights in the game footage and soundtrack. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn the operator, temporarily interrupt it, or terminate it. A licensed video can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. The applicable position can vary by game, publisher, territory, and music; do not assume that gameplay is automatically cleared. Speedrun.com’s terms also restrict unauthorized copying, archiving, scraping, and commercial use of its service and content, and describe the user grant as personal and non-commercial unless otherwise agreed in writing. Get appropriate authorization before commercial reuse or automated collection.
Local encoder or cloud service?
A local computer running an encoder gives you direct control of playback and output, but it depends on that computer, its power, and its internet connection staying available. A hosted feed avoids relying on a home computer for the ongoing stream, but you still need to monitor YouTube, maintain a rights-cleared playlist, and respond to issues your provider does not resolve. No particular PC, capture card, or minimum CPU, GPU, memory, or storage requirement is established for this pre-recorded-video setup. A capture card is relevant if you are also capturing a separate live console source, not required just to rotate prepared video files.
