To keep a gurdwara’s Gurbani playlist live on YouTube, prepare a rights-cleared playlist and visual, enable live streaming on the channel, then send the feed to YouTube through an encoder or a cloud service. A local encoder gives the gurdwara direct control but needs a computer and reliable internet connection to stay on. A cloud option can keep uploaded recordings looping without a home computer running. In either case, secure permission for the specific performances and recordings first: YouTube’s technical approval does not grant music rights.
Before you set up the stream
Enable live streaming on the channel
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so turn it on well before the intended launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Confirm rights for every item
Make a rights checklist for each playlist item: the performance, the recording, and any third-party accompaniment or other material. The person or organization operating the channel must have the necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and can interrupt or terminate a stream. Even where a recording is licensed, the rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID.

The SGPC-published Sikh Rehat Maryada describes congregational kirtan as singing scriptural compositions in traditional musical measures and specifies material appropriate for that setting; it is religious context, not copyright clearance. Separately, an SGPC notice from 2023 states that rights to Gurbani broadcasts from Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib remain with SGPC and that no channel may broadcast that material at its own will. That notice concerns the Harmandar Sahib broadcast; it should not be treated as a blanket rule about every gurdwara’s own recordings. Establish who controls the rights to your own performance and recording, and obtain permission for any third-party material.

Choose a way to keep the playlist live
Local encoder on a computer
YouTube supports software encoders running on computers as well as standalone hardware encoders. With a local setup, the gurdwara controls the playlist and stream directly, but the computer, encoder software, and internet connection must keep operating for the stream to continue. YouTube’s setup guidance explains how to create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room and send the stream URL and key to the encoder.

Cloud playback for uploaded recordings
A cloud service may suit a continuous stream built from pre-recorded videos because the playback runs remotely rather than on a gurdwara computer. Check any provider’s YouTube support, playlist looping, recovery after interruption, handling of stream keys and archives, cost, and support before relying on it; these are provider-specific features to verify. Whichever route you use, rights clearance remains your responsibility.
Set up the local encoder method
- Enable the channel and prepare the content. Complete YouTube’s verification and live-stream enablement steps ahead of launch. Assemble the rights-cleared audio playlist and the visual that will accompany it.
- Create the stream in Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it can send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or share it outside the people who need access.
- Configure a sustainable video and audio feed. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Use constant bitrate encoding and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your computer and upload connection can sustain. There is no single bitrate that fits every combination; consult YouTube’s current recommendations for your selected codec and output.
- Prefer RTMPS and leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the contribution feed between the encoder and YouTube. Its guidance recommends upload bandwidth at least 20% above the stream bitrate. If your connection fluctuates, reduce the output bitrate or resolution rather than using all available upload capacity.
- Connect and preview before going live. Start the encoder’s connection and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Test representative playlist audio, check the picture and stream health, and confirm that the correct stream is receiving the feed before starting publicly. YouTube recommends testing ahead of the event and monitoring quality.
- Monitor operation and plan for interruptions. Keep an operator able to check the encoder, connection, and Live Control Room health. Decide in advance who will restart the stream if the computer, network, or YouTube connection fails. Do not assume one live event can run indefinitely or that its archive will be unlimited: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, and the platform’s guidance does not promise an indefinitely running, indefinitely archived event.

Troubleshoot common problems
- Live streaming is not available: Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is the first enablement, allow up to 24 hours.
- Live Control Room does not show a preview: Confirm the encoder is connected to the correct stream URL and key, and that it is sending a supported video and audio format. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s stream health.
- The feed buffers or drops: Compare the actual upload capacity with the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; lower the bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot maintain that margin.
- The stream is interrupted by a copyright match: Stop and investigate the claim rather than assuming the item is safe because it is devotional or previously broadcast elsewhere. Confirm rights for the specific recording and performance; if licensed material is blocked, ask the rights holder whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting.
- The stream ends or its archive is missing: Check how long the event ran and whether the encoder or connection restarted. YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition applies to streams under 12 hours; do not rely on it as a promise of indefinite continuity or archiving.
FAQ
Can a gurdwara broadcast Gurbani from Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib?
The SGPC notice specifically says rights to those Gurbani broadcasts remain with SGPC and that channels may not rebroadcast that material at their own will. Contact the rights holder for permission rather than assuming a YouTube stream is authorized.
Does a live stream need a camera?
Not for a playlist made from uploaded recordings. An encoder or cloud service can send pre-recorded content with a visual; the setup described here is for playback of uploaded videos, not going live from a camera.
