You can run an always-on YouTube music stream from a PC by sending an audio-and-video feed through an encoder such as OBS to YouTube Live. The channel, PC, internet connection and power supply all need to remain available; “always-on” is the intended setup, not a guarantee against interruptions. Before going public, enable live streaming, confirm you have the rights to rebroadcast the music, and test the complete setup privately.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to live stream. YouTube requires no live-streaming restriction on the channel in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do it ahead of your planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A PC capable of encoding the chosen video and audio feed, OBS Studio, and an internet connection with enough upload capacity for your stream.
- Music and visuals you own or have permission to use for a live broadcast. A personal subscription to a music service does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast its catalogue.
- Reliable power for the PC and network equipment. Assess the conditions at the actual streaming location; the available guidance does not establish an India-specific upload-speed threshold or backup-power requirement.
OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic Windows requirements. Meeting them does not guarantee smooth streaming: the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity all affect the PC’s workload. OBS’s published requirements page is dated 2021-08-25, so check it against the version you install: OBS system requirements.
Set up the PC stream in OBS
- Enable live streaming on YouTube. Verify the channel and enable live streaming in advance. If this is the channel’s first time streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Install OBS and configure an initial profile. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then use its recommended starting settings for your PC and connection. Treat them as a starting point rather than a guarantee: test the actual scene and stream for stability before scheduling a long broadcast.
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then create a stream or select a scheduled one. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key to connect the encoder. The official guide explains the setup at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS’s streaming settings, enter the server URL and stream key shown in the YouTube stream setup. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, show it in screenshots, or include it in on-screen graphics. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream.
- Add the audio and visual sources. Add the intended music source and a simple visual, such as a static image or visualizer you created or are cleared to use. Check OBS’s audio meters and listen to the output so you know the intended audio is actually in the encoder mix. Audio-routing controls differ by PC and audio hardware, so verify the signal on your particular setup rather than assuming a source is captured.
- Rehearse privately. Set the stream to unlisted or private and test the full path. Monitor the YouTube preview and audio from another device, and check for dropped frames, missing sound, unexpected silence or an incorrect image. YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test before a high-investment production; it is a useful practice for an always-on setup too. See YouTube for Artists.
- Start the public broadcast and keep watch. When the rehearsal is good, set the stream’s visibility as intended, start streaming in OBS, confirm the preview and stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room, and take the event live there if the control room prompts you. Keep the PC powered on, prevent sleep or hibernation from interrupting the session, and observe how the connection behaves at the intended location.
Choose stream settings and protect continuity
Resolution, frame rate and encoding
Choose settings that the PC can sustain, not simply the highest values it offers. More complex scenes, higher resolution and higher frame rates can increase encoding demands. Use OBS’s configuration as a baseline, then run a private rehearsal with the same audio, visual and intended settings as the real broadcast. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal bitrate or upload-speed figure for Indian connections, so do not treat a generic number as a promise of stability. Your actual upload capacity and consistency at the streaming location matter.

Power and network dependencies
A PC-based stream depends on local hardware staying powered and connected. Check the computer’s sleep settings and monitor both power and internet during the rehearsal. A desktop UPS is optional: it can provide finite backup power for connected equipment during a brief interruption, but cannot fix an internet outage or guarantee an all-night stream. Choose one based on the connected load and the runtime you need; no particular model or capacity is established here.

YouTube replays and long broadcasts
YouTube may automatically archive streams that run for less than 12 hours. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not depend on YouTube’s archive for a replay of a longer broadcast. YouTube recommends making a local recording. If preserving the replay matters, record locally if the PC has adequate resources and storage, and consider ending and restarting the stream periodically rather than running beyond the archive window. Use music and visuals you are allowed to broadcast
YouTube scans live broadcasts for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the live video with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even if you have a licence, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; coordinate with the label or distributor when using copyright-protected music. - Prefer music you created or music whose live-broadcast rights are clearly documented.
- Check that any licence covers the specific use: streaming on YouTube, the relevant territory, and any planned monetization. Do not assume a service subscription or permission for personal listening covers public rebroadcast.
- Before using licensed third-party tracks, confirm whether the rights holder needs to allowlist your channel in Content ID. Arrange this before the scheduled stream.
- Use visuals you created or are authorized to broadcast as well; a cleared soundtrack does not automatically clear artwork, video or other material on screen.
YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music to avoid issues such as copyright strikes. The sources cited here describe YouTube’s platform handling, not India-specific music-licensing law; get appropriate India-specific advice if you need a legal determination.

Troubleshoot common problems
