Yes. A Linux VPS can keep a prerecorded playlist streaming to YouTube Live while your home computer is off: the VPS stores the files, runs an encoder such as FFmpeg, and sends the stream to YouTube. But ₹2,000 a month is a budget to verify, not a confirmed price for a VPS that can sustain your chosen stream. Check the full regional bill—including outbound data—then test the actual playlist, server load, and recovery behavior before relying on it.
How the setup works
Your channel receives a live stream from an encoder running on the VPS. FFmpeg reads local video files in playlist order, encodes them into a continuous video-and-audio feed, and sends that feed to YouTube’s ingest server over RTMPS. The VPS must stay running, keep the files accessible, and have enough sustained outbound capacity; moving the encoder off your home computer does not remove those requirements.
The example below uses a headless Linux server and FFmpeg, which is suitable for a fixed playlist without elaborate scenes. It is an implementation pattern, not a tested configuration: confirm the commands against your installed FFmpeg build, file formats, and YouTube preview.

Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and set up an encoder stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL/server and stream key from the encoder settings; the exact labels can vary as YouTube updates Studio. Follow YouTube’s current eligibility and streaming-method guidance at YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and methods page.

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public command, screenshot, repository, shared playlist, or support post. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
Make sure you have the rights to every item
Use files you are entitled to stream, including the video, music, and any other included material. YouTube’s live-stream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube livestream terms and its guidance on live copyright issues before streaming.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if a rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Resolve that with the rights owner before going live, rather than assuming a stream will remain uninterrupted.

Choose a Linux instance with persistent storage for your playlist and enough CPU to encode it. If the source files already match the output format, stream-copying may reduce CPU use, but it requires compatible codecs and consistent files; the example below transcodes to a common H.264/AAC output instead. Transcoding is work for the VPS processor, so test CPU use with the actual files.

Check the provider’s current plan for included monthly outbound transfer, overage pricing, region-specific fees, tax, IPv4 or other add-ons, and backup charges. A low monthly instance price is not the all-in cost if the stream’s egress exceeds the allowance. No particular VPS plan or India price is established here as suitable for this workload.
Prepare the VPS and playlist
- Connect to your Linux VPS over SSH. Use an account with administrator privileges for installation and service setup. Create a dedicated non-root account for the stream process and a directory for the media and playlist. For example, use
/srv/youtube-loopas the working directory; adapt paths and account names to your server. - Install FFmpeg using the distribution’s package manager. On an Ubuntu or Debian system, a starting command is
sudo apt update && sudo apt install ffmpeg. Package versions and available codecs vary by distribution. Check the installed build withffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -encoders; confirm that the H.264 encoderlibx264and AAC support are available before using the command below. - Upload the video files to the VPS. Keep them in a directory the dedicated stream account can read. Make sure the server has room for the full playlist and logs, and that files are not being modified or moved while FFmpeg is using them.
- Create an ordered FFmpeg concat list. In the working directory, create
playlist.txtwith one entry per video, in the order you want them to play. Use absolute paths, one per line, for example:file '/srv/youtube-loop/videos/01.mp4' file '/srv/youtube-loop/videos/02.mp4' file '/srv/youtube-loop/videos/03.mp4'Use simple filenames and avoid apostrophes in paths unless you have checked FFmpeg’s concat-list escaping rules. The files should have compatible video and audio streams and playback characteristics. If their dimensions, frame rates, codecs, audio tracks, or timing differ, test the transitions and normalize the source files as needed; an encoder command cannot guarantee seamless transitions for every combination.
- Protect the key outside the playlist and command line. Create a root-readable environment file, for example with
sudo install -m 600 /dev/null /etc/youtube-loop.env, then edit it withsudoedit /etc/youtube-loop.env. SetYOUTUBE_INGESTto the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for your encoder in YouTube Studio. Keep the file private and do not paste the value into shell commands, logs, or this article. If you use a different service account or deployment layout, adjust file ownership and service permissions accordingly.
Set an ingest profile and start a test stream
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. For a modest starting point, YouTube lists 4 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps in the 240p–720p range. That is an ingest recommendation, not proof that a VPS can encode or deliver it steadily. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before choosing a higher resolution or bitrate.
After you have created the private environment file, run this example from the playlist directory as the account that owns the files. It assumes compatible video and audio streams in every playlist item and an FFmpeg build with libx264:
set -a
. /etc/youtube-loop.env
set +a
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/youtube-loop/playlist.txt
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4000k -maxrate 4000k -bufsize 8000k
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST"
The concat input makes an ordered sequence; -stream_loop -1 repeats that input, and -re reads it at approximately real-time speed rather than as fast as the server can process it. The output uses H.264 at a 4 Mbps target with a two-second GOP at 30 fps, plus AAC audio. The optional audio map accommodates a playlist whose first item has no audio stream, but inconsistent audio layouts can still cause problems. For a predictable stream, give every file compatible audio and video streams and test the joins. If you change resolution or frame rate, keep the output settings and keyframe interval aligned with the profile you intend to use.

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select the encoder stream, and wait for the incoming signal and preview. Check that the correct channel is selected, the video is not blank or stretched, audio is audible and in sync, and the next playlist items actually play. Start with an unlisted test if you do not want the initial checks visible to viewers. YouTube also recommends testing and monitoring the audio and video; see its live streaming tips.
Keep the encoder running after SSH disconnects or a reboot
Do not rely on an interactive SSH session: closing it can stop the encoder. Use a process supervisor or a system service so the process starts at boot, restarts after a failure, and writes logs you can inspect. The following systemd example assumes the service account is named streamer, FFmpeg is at /usr/bin/ffmpeg, the playlist is at /srv/youtube-loop/playlist.txt, and the environment file is readable by the service. Change those paths and permissions to match your installation.
[Unit]
Description=YouTube playlist stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube-loop
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-loop.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/youtube-loop/playlist.txt -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4000k -maxrate 4000k -bufsize 8000k -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv ${YOUTUBE_INGEST}
Restart=always
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-loop.service, review its access to the environment file and playlist, then load and start it:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-loop.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-loop.service
sudo journalctl -u youtube-loop.service -f
In this service example, systemd supplies the environment variable to FFmpeg; keep the key out of the unit file. Verify the service’s quoting and environment handling on your distribution before depending on it. Restart=always asks systemd to restart a process that exits; it does not prove the stream is healthy or guarantee reconnection after every network or YouTube-side failure. Confirm recovery in the YouTube preview and logs, and decide how you will be alerted if the service stops or the incoming signal disappears.

Test the failure cases and monitor the real workload
- Playlist transitions: watch more than one full rotation, including the joins between files. Listen for missing, doubled, or abruptly changing audio and check for black frames or freezes.
- Server capacity: observe CPU, memory, disk space, and outbound network use while the encoder is running. If CPU is saturated or frames are dropped, lower the output resolution or bitrate, choose a more capable instance, or test a compatible stream-copy workflow.
- Network interruption: simulate a brief interruption only when you can safely run a test stream. Check whether FFmpeg exits, whether the supervisor restarts it, and whether the channel returns to receiving a signal. A process restart is not the same as a seamless broadcast recovery.
- Reboot: restart the VPS during a planned test window and confirm that the service starts, can read its files and key, and appears in Live Control Room again.
- Disk and logs: ensure the server has space for the media and that logs do not grow indefinitely. A service that keeps running can still fail later if the disk fills or files become unreadable.
- Ongoing checks: monitor YouTube’s incoming signal and stream preview as well as the VPS process. A running FFmpeg process alone does not establish that viewers are receiving healthy video and audio.
Budget for the full month, not just the instance
At the example’s 4 Mbps video bitrate, the video payload alone is about 1.296 TB in a 30-day month using decimal units: 4 megabits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This is a calculation from the selected bitrate, before protocol overhead; audio, overhead, and provider billing rules can increase the billable transfer. Higher bitrates raise monthly transfer in proportion to the bitrate.
Before treating ₹2,000 as workable, confirm the provider’s current price for your region and the instance’s sustained CPU capacity, included egress, overage rates, taxes, IP charges, backups, and storage. Include any applicable currency conversion. Then compare the all-in total with the budget. Without a current provider quote and a workload test, neither the target budget nor a low advertised instance price establishes that the stream will fit.
Plan separately for replays and monetization
Archives
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, plan to end and restart the live event before it reaches that limit, and keep a separate recording backup. A planned segment break means the live feed will not be one uninterrupted event, and the backup must be stored somewhere with sufficient space. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMonetization
Continuous runtime or a rotating playlist does not by itself qualify a channel for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and expect content to be original and authentic rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive. The policy page’s July 15, 2025 update clarified that its repetitious-content rule includes repetitive or mass-produced content and calls it “inauthentic content.” Reviewers may consider a channel’s theme, most-viewed and newest videos, watch-time-heavy videos, and metadata. Repetitive material may raise policy concerns, but that does not predict the decision on an individual channel. Copyright compliance and monetization eligibility are separate questions; review the current YouTube channel monetization policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is the managed alternative to try first if you want an always-on YouTube playlist without administering a VPS: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Its first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Check the service details at StreamNeo, then start a StreamNeo free day.
