To keep product videos playing on YouTube around the clock, send a repeating playlist to a YouTube Live stream through an encoder. First make sure the channel can go live, then connect an encoder to YouTube Studio with a stream URL and key, test the feed, and plan how it will be monitored and restarted. YouTube does not promise that a single live event can run indefinitely, so an always-on channel needs a continuity plan—not just a loop.
What an always-on YouTube channel means
YouTube does not provide a special “always-on channel” mode. The practical setup is an encoder-based live stream that continually sends a planned video feed—such as a loop or playlist—to YouTube Live. The encoder may be software on a computer or standalone hardware. This approach suits a product showcase designed to repeat, particularly when it uses overlays, external video sources, or a carefully ordered presentation.
A continuous presentation and a single uninterrupted live event are not the same thing. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but its setup guidance does not guarantee unlimited runtime or establish that every stream longer than 12 hours will be archived. Check YouTube’s current behavior before building a schedule around long-running events, and plan for monitoring, recovery, and possibly restarting the stream. - Verify the channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube may take up to 24 hours to activate live streaming for a channel that has never streamed, so enable it well before the intended launch. Check YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
- Choose whether the stream should be public, private, or unlisted. Consider who needs access during testing and who should find the finished showcase.
- Confirm that the account you use has access to the channel’s Live Control Room and that you can protect and update its stream key.
- Review rights for every video, image, soundtrack, voice-over, and other element you plan to broadcast. Product ownership does not automatically grant permission to use third-party music or footage.
Choose an encoder and plan the feed
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. For a repeating product-video presentation, an encoder is the relevant option: it can send a designed feed rather than a single camera view. Choose software or standalone hardware according to the production’s inputs, setup complexity, and ability to run unattended. YouTube supports both categories but does not require a particular brand or establish a universally best model. Review YouTube’s encoder options before choosing equipment.

Build a product sequence that makes sense live
- Arrange the videos into a deliberate loop or playlist, with clear product order and transitions. A live viewer may join at any point, so make product names and essential context understandable without assuming they saw the start.
- Check that claims, pricing, availability, demonstrations, and safety directions are accurate for the audience you intend to serve. Remove expired offers and products no longer available.
- Decide who or what will check the stream, the encoder, the network, and product accuracy during operation, and who will respond if the feed fails.
Create the YouTube Live stream and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open the Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream and set its title, description, and visibility. The exact interface can change, so follow the current prompts in Studio. YouTube’s setup instructions cover encoder streams.
- Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key from the stream settings. In the encoder, paste the server URL into its server or destination field and the key into its stream-key field, then save the configuration.
- Treat the key like a password: it identifies where the encoder’s feed should go. Do not show it in a public video, screenshot, or shared document. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in the encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address” in Manage live stream settings.
Configure continuity, latency, and viewer controls
YouTube’s live settings include auto-start, auto-stop, latency, and DVR. Auto-start and auto-stop can let the encoder control when the stream starts and stops; confirm the behavior you want in Live Control Room before relying on it. DVR lets viewers pause and resume the live stream. For a product showcase with little real-time interaction, lower latency may offer limited benefit and can increase playback buffering; choose a setting that fits the viewing experience rather than assuming the lowest latency is always best. These controls do not remove the need to plan for interruptions. Establish how the feed will be checked and restored if the encoder, connection, or YouTube ingest drops. Also decide how you will handle a stream approaching a long runtime: the official archive guidance establishes automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not an indefinite event or a guaranteed archive beyond that threshold. Set video quality and test the stream
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, protocol, keyframe interval, and bitrate based on the encoder’s capabilities and the available upload connection. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming stream into output formats for viewers, so sending the highest possible resolution is not automatically the best choice if it makes the feed unstable. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and provides current protocol, codec, frame-rate, keyframe, and bitrate guidance in its encoder streaming tips.
Leave upload capacity for more than the encoder’s headline bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; its guidance also says the combined bandwidth for primary, backup, and headroom should fit the available upload capacity. Test on the connection and with the settings you intend to use, rather than relying on a speed-test result taken under different conditions. Pre-launch test checklist
- Run a private or unlisted test and confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed.
- Use movement and audio representative of the actual videos; listen for clipping, silence, sync problems, and unwanted gaps.
- Check Live Control Room’s preview, stream-health messages, and the watch page. Confirm the channel and watch page are accessible as intended.
- Play the test on a mobile device as well as the production setup, and check that the video is legible and the product order is clear.
- Let the test run long enough to expose likely connection or playback problems, while recognizing that a test cannot guarantee future uptime.
Publish, monitor, and keep the presentation accurate
Before making the stream public, check its preview and watch page, confirm the right visibility and metadata, and make sure the encoder is sending the intended loop. During operation, assign responsibility for checking picture, sound, encoder status, network, product details, and stream recovery. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and messages; its guidance does not establish a universal uptime figure for an individual channel. If a video, product, offer, or soundtrack changes, update the playlist and any related shopping tags. Continuous playback makes stale claims especially easy to miss, so build routine content checks into the operating plan.

Tag products in YouTube Live when eligible
YouTube Shopping product tags are conditional, not available to every channel or for every stream. Eligible creators may tag their own products after connecting a store, or products from other brands when they meet YouTube Shopping requirements. Tags can be added before a live stream, while it is live, or afterward; tags added after the event can appear in the replay. A creator can pin featured products. Changes during a stream may not appear immediately to viewers already watching, so finalize the product order and remove outdated items before going live where possible. Keep tags relevant and compliant
- Tag products that are actually and prominently featured, used safely, and meaningfully related to the stream.
- For products from other brands, check eligibility, participating retailer availability, viewer location, and shipping availability. Requirements and availability can vary.
- Observe YouTube’s rights and content rules, including music rights. Certain content, including made-for-kids videos or content deemed ineligible for monetization, may not qualify for product tagging.
- Disclose paid placements and endorsements where applicable.
- Do not treat a tag as a promise that every viewer can buy the item or that every channel can use the feature.
Understand shopping and other monetization options
YouTube Shopping’s affiliate program is a possible native route for eligible creators, not an automatic entitlement. YouTube’s published overview says creators must be in the YouTube Partner Program, meet its subscriber threshold, be based in an eligible listed country, and satisfy other channel criteria. Enrollment is through YouTube Studio’s Earn area after qualification. Other monetization features for eligible live streams may include ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and memberships. YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Shopping tags and monetization features should not be confused: a product tag is not by itself a guarantee of a sale, an affiliate relationship, or revenue. YouTube reported 30 billion hours of shopping-related video watch time in 2023, and an increase of over 25% in watch time for videos that help people shop in 2023 across VOD, Shorts, and live. These are platform-wide figures, not a performance forecast for a new product channel. YouTube’s 2023 shopping figures provide that context.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
