You can use FFmpeg to send gameplay to YouTube Live, but an always-on channel takes more than a working command: the game or other video source, encoder computer, and network must remain available, and you need to monitor the stream. This guide covers YouTube setup, encoder settings, a schematic FFmpeg command, operational limits, and an optional cloud alternative.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours; after it is enabled, a stream can go live instantly. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  • A gameplay source that FFmpeg can access. That might be a game running on the streaming computer, a capture device, or another supported input.
  • An FFmpeg build with the input and encoding support your setup requires, plus a host and upload connection capable of running continuously.
  • The RTMPS server URL and stream key for the selected stream, copied from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

A capture card, microphone, webcam, headphones, hardware encoder, or scene-based encoder is a workflow choice—not a YouTube ingestion requirement. A console routed to a separate computer may need an HDMI capture card; gameplay already available on the streaming computer may not.

Set up the YouTube live stream

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and complete any required channel enablement. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
  2. Create or select a stream. In the Live Control Room, create a stream or choose the one you intend to use. If you schedule it, make sure FFmpeg publishes to the matching stream configuration.
  3. Copy the RTMPS destination and key. In the stream’s settings, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection. Follow YouTube’s instructions for encoder stream settings.
  4. Keep the key private. Do not publish a real key in a guide, public script, repository, screenshot, or shared log. Avoid putting it in shell history where other users of the machine can read it. Use the exact current endpoint and credential from your own Live Control Room; the example below uses placeholders.

Choose how gameplay reaches FFmpeg

Game running on the streaming computer

If your game is already running on the computer that will encode and publish, use an input method FFmpeg supports for that operating system and capture setup. The precise input options depend on the capture source and FFmpeg build; there is no universal gameplay-capture input line that fits every system.

Console feeding a separate computer

A console’s HDMI output can be routed through a compatible capture device into a computer running FFmpeg. Check that the card, operating system, input format, resolution, and frame rate work together before designing the broadcast. YouTube’s setup guide discusses capture software for console gameplay and external video hardware, but does not endorse a particular capture card.

Other encoder routes

YouTube accepts encoder software or standalone hardware. FFmpeg suits a computer-managed, scriptable workflow; a hardware encoder may fit a dedicated appliance setup. OBS Studio and other graphical encoders are alternatives if you prefer scenes and overlays. Confirm that whichever encoder you choose supports the input, protocol, codec, and output settings you need.

Match FFmpeg output to YouTube’s current guidance

Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and color format before publishing. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Audio sample rate, bitrate, pixel format, bit depth, and color-space choices also depend on the selected format, particularly for HDR.

H.264 bitrate examples from YouTube

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion figures for the listed H.264 modes, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. There is no universal bitrate: choose the row matching your output and test that your upload can hold it while gameplay is representative. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.

Illustrative FFmpeg command

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
  -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER -g GOP_FRAMES
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY'

This is a schematic command, not a tested recipe. Replace the placeholders with a valid input, the endpoint and key copied from YouTube, a bitrate appropriate for the output, a buffer setting, and a GOP length that produces the recommended two-second keyframe interval at your chosen frame rate. The example uses H.264 and AAC; your input flags, pixel format, audio options, codec availability, and output settings may differ. FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation describes publishing URL syntax and RTMPS. Do not treat a sample URL or key as a real credential.

Keep the channel live: source, process, host, and monitoring

An always-on feed depends on several components staying healthy at once. FFmpeg cannot publish a game that has stopped producing frames, repair a failed capture device, or restore a broken network connection by itself.

  • Source: Keep the game or video source active and verify that the capture input continues producing video and, if expected, audio.
  • Encoder: Watch the FFmpeg process and its output for errors, stalled input, or publishing failures. A process supervisor or restart policy can help restart a terminated process, but does not fix persistent bad settings, a credential problem, or an unavailable source.
  • Host and network: Plan for the streaming computer, power, and upload connection to remain usable. Test with the actual gameplay load; a momentary speed test does not establish that an upload will stay stable indefinitely.
  • YouTube ingest: Monitor the stream health indicators. YouTube’s API identifies configuration problems such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing audio, and video starvation. A healthy FFmpeg process does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving the intended stream correctly.
  • Recovery: Decide who or what will respond to a host failure, source crash, network outage, or YouTube ingest drop. Automatic process restarts are not the same as end-to-end recovery.

YouTube’s API distinguishes a liveStream feed from a liveBroadcast event. Its continuous-broadcast guide documents an advanced arrangement in which a continuous broadcast remains live while a separate event is started from the same stream; completing that event does not require stopping the continuous feed. This API-managed pattern is optional for a basic single broadcast. The API describes the broadcast arrangement, not guaranteed availability of your host, game source, or network.

Understand archiving and broadcast lifecycle

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That promise is specifically for streams under 12 hours. For a longer-running feed, do not assume the entire broadcast will be retained; make a separate recording or archive plan if you need the footage, and check YouTube’s current behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose deliberately whether a session should remain a single broadcast or be divided into separate events. For an API-managed continuous feed with separate events, use YouTube’s documented stream/broadcast model rather than assuming that repeatedly restarting FFmpeg creates the desired event structure. Plan how you will end or replace a broadcast, and how any local recording will be stored.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not show an incoming stream: Confirm that you enabled live streaming, selected the intended stream, copied its current RTMPS URL and key, and used an FFmpeg input that is actually producing frames. A typo or stale credential can prevent publishing.
  • Stream health reports low bitrate: Compare the outgoing bitrate with YouTube’s guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check whether your upload can sustain it. Lower the output target if the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen rate.
  • Frame-rate mismatch or choppy output: Check the frame rate produced by the capture input and the frame rate configured for output. Match the stream configuration to the actual output; do not assume the game’s displayed frame rate is the encoder’s output rate.
  • Missing audio: Confirm the selected input includes the intended audio source, that FFmpeg maps or encodes it, and that the output uses a supported audio codec such as AAC or MP3. Check YouTube’s stream health as well as local FFmpeg output.
  • Video starvation or a frozen picture: Check whether the source is still producing frames, the capture device is connected, and the host is under load. Restarting FFmpeg will not help if the underlying input remains unavailable.
  • Repeated disconnects: Investigate upload stability, host power or sleep settings, capture-source crashes, and FFmpeg errors. Do not assume that an automatic restart guarantees seamless reconnection or preserves the same broadcast lifecycle.
  • A long stream is missing from the archive: YouTube’s stated automatic archive coverage is streams under 12 hours. Use a separate recording plan for footage that must be kept from a longer feed.

Costs and trade-offs

The FFmpeg publishing workflow itself does not require buying a particular encoder or capture card, but it does depend on a suitable computer, source, and network. A capture device is an optional cost for workflows such as routing console gameplay into a separate PC. Compare direct local capture with a capture-card setup based on compatibility, control, and whether extra hardware is actually needed.

Self-hosted FFmpeg gives you direct control over the process and game/source machine, while putting continuity and monitoring on you. Cloud continuous-video services may suit prerecorded playout, but a service designed for prerecorded video should not be assumed to accept a live gameplay input. Check source compatibility, ongoing cost, control, archive needs, and the service’s current capabilities before choosing.

Or let it run in the cloud

For an uploaded-video loop rather than a live game capture, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not capture a live camera or live gameplay input.
