To set up an AirTag, remove its wrapping and battery tab, hold it near your iPhone or iPad, tap Connect, name it, and link it to your Apple Account. To look for it later, open Find My, tap Items, and select the AirTag. Check the map and its timestamp before choosing directions, sound, or nearby finding: a displayed position may be the last place the AirTag reported, not its current location.
Set up and register your AirTag
- Prepare the AirTag. Remove the product wrapping and battery tab.
- Start pairing. Bring the AirTag close to your iPhone or iPad and tap Connect when prompted. If you have several AirTags, pair them one at a time.
- Name it. Choose a suggested category or name, or enter a custom name and emoji.
- Link it to your account. Continue to register the AirTag to your Apple Account, then tap Done.
- Attach and check it. Put the AirTag on the item you want to keep track of, such as keys or a backpack. Open Find My and check the Items tab to confirm it appears under the name you chose.
Apple says setup requires iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later for AirTag; AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later. See Apple’s AirTag setup requirements and instructions for current details. An AirTag already linked to another Apple Account must be removed by that account holder before you can register it.
Find an AirTag in Find My
- Open Find My and tap Items.
- Select the AirTag you want to locate.
- Read the map and the location timestamp. Apple’s Find My instructions describe the location and recovery controls available for an item.
- Choose an available recovery option: Directions opens Maps, Play Sound can help when the AirTag is nearby, and Find provides directional guidance when nearby finding is available.
Understand the map pin and status
A map pin does not always mean the AirTag is there now. Find My may show a current location or the last location reported, with a timestamp to help you judge how recent it is. If the app says No location found or shows an offline status, it cannot currently provide a location. In applicable cases, Apple says Find My can show a last known location for up to seven days; after more than seven days without a location sent through the Find My network, that location is no longer displayed. Treat an older pin as a last reported position, not proof that the item remains there.

If Notify When Found is offered, enable it and make sure Find My notifications are allowed on your device. Apple also distinguishes sharing an AirTag’s location with someone from marking it as lost; sharing alone does not put the item into lost status. Choose the right way to search nearby
Use Directions for a map-guided trip
Tap Directions to open Maps and navigate toward the location Find My reports. This is useful when the item is not close enough for the nearby controls, but the map can reflect a last known position rather than a live one.
Use Play Sound when the AirTag is close
Tap Play Sound if the option is available and listen for the AirTag. Sound can help locate an item nearby, including when it is out of sight, but it does not provide a directional bearing.

Use Find for directional guidance
When available, tap Find and follow the on-screen distance and direction guidance. Apple says Precision Finding works with iPhone 15 and later. It requires an iPhone that supports Ultra Wideband, Location Services enabled, and Find My location access; Apple recommends allowing Precise Location for the most accurate result. Walls and other objects can affect the guidance. If Find or nearby finding is unavailable, use the map, Directions, or Play Sound where offered. Apple explains the Precision Finding requirements and limitations.

If setup or finding does not work
- No Connect prompt: Confirm the wrapping and battery tab have been removed, keep the AirTag close, and pair only one AirTag at a time. Check that the device meets the relevant iOS or iPadOS requirement.
- AirTag is tied to another account: Ask the previous account holder to remove it from their Apple Account before trying again.
- No nearby Find control: Check iPhone compatibility, Location Services, and Find My location access; enable Precise Location for more accurate guidance. Environmental obstacles can still affect Precision Finding.
- No current location: Use Notify When Found if available and permitted, and check the timestamp if a last known position appears. Do not assume an old pin is current.
