Can you set up Alexa without a smartphone?
It depends on the Echo model. An Echo Show has an on-device setup flow for joining Wi-Fi and signing in to your Amazon account. For screenless Echo and Echo Dot models, Amazon’s general instructions use the Alexa app.

Set up an Echo Show without a phone
- Connect the Echo Show to power using its included power adapter.
- Select a language on the display.
- Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
- Sign in to your Amazon account.
- Follow the remaining on-screen prompts. Amazon says setup is complete when the home screen and clock appear. See Amazon’s Set Up Your Echo Show instructions.
For the Echo Show 8 (2025 release), Amazon also describes an option to scan a QR code to continue setup in the Alexa app, or to continue on the Echo Show itself. Its listed requirements include the device and power adapter, Amazon account credentials, and Wi-Fi network name and password. If your Amazon account has no password, Amazon says you must set one to register the device. These details are specific to that model and release; do not assume every Echo Show has identical prompts. What if you have a screenless Echo or Echo Dot?
Amazon’s instructions for Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Dot with clock, and Echo Dot Kids say to use the Alexa app to set up or register the device. The listed app path is Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo; select the relevant Echo category and follow the prompts. Amazon’s guide does not provide a computer-browser setup flow for these speakers. Do not assume Alexa.com or another browser can register a screenless Echo without model-specific confirmation from Amazon. Amazon maintains separate support sections for Echo speakers and Echo devices with screens, so check the exact model’s instructions if you have an older or less common device: Amazon Echo device support.
What you need before starting
- An Amazon account and its sign-in credentials.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password.
- The Echo Show’s included power adapter.
For an Echo Show setup without a phone, keep the account credentials and Wi-Fi details nearby so you can enter them on the display.

Accessibility and privacy considerations
Amazon lists Tap to Alexa, captioning, screen magnifier, and VoiceView among Echo accessibility features. Availability and operation can vary by device; consult Amazon’s Echo accessibility information for details.
For the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) specifically, Amazon says a blue light appears on screen while Alexa is recording and processing a request, and that the camera is enabled by default. Those statements apply to that model and should not be generalized to every Echo Show.
