To run a radio-style YouTube livestream from a Windows PC, enable live streaming on an eligible channel, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, send audio from an encoder such as OBS, and check the preview before going public. First, confirm that you have permission to livestream every track: YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content and may interrupt them. The steps below cover a live, PC-based setup; for a continuous loop of uploaded recordings without leaving a PC running, see the cloud option near the end.
Before you set up the stream
Check channel eligibility and activation time
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- YouTube says the minimum age for live streaming is 16.
- Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Activate it well before your planned broadcast.
These are YouTube-wide requirements. Its general guidance also tells creators to comply with applicable territorial requirements. The official information covered here does not establish which Indian music or broadcast permissions apply to a particular program. Confirm the rights for your tracks, recordings, compositions, territories, livestream, and any replay with the relevant rights holders or qualified local counsel.
Choose audio you are allowed to livestream
Do not assume a track is cleared for a live broadcast just because you can play it, or because a license covers another use. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects copyrighted material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it temporarily, or terminate it. Even licensed content can be interrupted if a rights owner uses Content ID and has not allowlisted your channel.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Keep records of permissions and confirm they cover YouTube livestreaming and the territories where the stream will be available.
- If the rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether they need to allowlist your channel.
- YouTube identifies its Audio Library as a source of copyright-safe music and sound effects, but check the applicable terms for each item and your intended use.
- YouTube Creator Music’s FAQ says it does not support licensing for live content. Do not treat a Creator Music license as clearance for a livestream.
Choose an encoder workflow
For a radio program with deliberate audio routing, a static image or graphic, and optional spoken segments, use an encoder workflow rather than a simple webcam broadcast. YouTube’s encoder process sends a signal from your PC to Live Control Room, where you can preview it before starting the event. OBS is one encoder YouTube names in its specialist documentation; the general workflow is not tied to a paid encoder.

Set up the event and connect Windows
- Open YouTube Studio: choose Create → Go live, then select the encoder or stream workflow in Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule the event: set up the broadcast in Live Control Room. Allow time to test before the public start.
- Copy the stream credentials: copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Treat the key like a password; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it or share it in screenshots.
- Configure your encoder: install and open your chosen Windows encoder, select YouTube or RTMPS if offered, and enter or connect the stream URL and key according to the encoder’s workflow. Use its normal SDR preset unless your source, computer, and broadcast setup specifically support HDR.
- Check the destination: confirm that the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube event, not another event or a previously used key.
Route the radio audio into the encoder
Music-only program
In the encoder’s audio mixer, select the actual Windows playback or production source carrying the program. Play a representative section and confirm that the source’s level meters move. A microphone is not required for a music-only feed.
Program with a presenter
Add the microphone as a separate audio input, then speak while monitoring the meters. Balance speech against the program audio so that neither source obscures the other. Headphones can help you check the output without feeding speaker sound back into the microphone. A microphone is optional equipment for a hosted show, not a requirement for a radio-style music stream.

Give the stream a visual
A radio broadcast can be audio-led, but the encoder still sends a video stream. Use a still image, title card, or other visual you have the rights to use, and confirm it appears in the encoder and YouTube preview. Keep the visual and the audio source separate in your checks: seeing the title card does not prove the music is reaching the stream.

Choose encoder settings that your connection can sustain
For standard-dynamic-range video sent over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into playback formats, so choose a resolution and frame rate your PC and connection can maintain rather than defaulting to the highest setting.

| Output example | YouTube-recommended H.264 encoder bitrate | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | Recommended encoder bitrate, not a measured connection speed or a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | Recommended encoder bitrate, not a measured connection speed or a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | Recommended encoder bitrate, not a measured connection speed or a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. |
YouTube’s encoder table includes other recommendations for different frame rates and codecs; consult its current settings guidance if you choose AV1, H.265, or a different output format. The figures above are the recommendations in YouTube Help’s encoder table accessed in 2026, not a claim about your PC’s performance.
Plan for upload headroom
YouTube recommends about 20% more available upload capacity than the combined bitrate of the stream. For one stream set to 6 Mbps, that guidance works out to about 7.2 Mbps of stable available upload capacity (6 × 1.2). That is arithmetic from YouTube’s recommendation, not a separate YouTube-published speed requirement. Plan for more if other people or devices share the connection, or if your upload speed varies. Test outbound upload speed under realistic conditions; a speed-test result is not a guarantee that the same capacity will remain available during the broadcast.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Prepare early: YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled broadcast.
- Send a representative test: run the actual audio sources and visual you intend to use. Check that the encoder meters move and that the output is not silent, distorted, or unexpectedly muted.
- Inspect Live Control Room: wait for the incoming signal and inspect the preview before starting the public event. YouTube’s advice is to test before going live.
- Check the viewer experience: open the watch page on another device and confirm that the audio and image play as expected.
- Start and watch stream health: monitor Live Control Room and the encoder for connection, audio, and video problems while the broadcast runs.
- End cleanly: stop the event on YouTube, then stop the encoder.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | Channel verification, a recent restriction, age eligibility, or first-time activation may be blocking setup. | Check channel verification and eligibility, confirm there is no live restriction from the preceding 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| Live Control Room shows no incoming signal | The encoder may not be sending, or it may have the wrong event credentials or destination. | Confirm the encoder is running, the stream URL and key match the intended event, and the encoder is configured for the YouTube destination. |
| The preview appears, but there is no audio | The wrong playback or production source may be selected, or that source may be muted. | Play the program audio, check the selected encoder input and its mute state, and watch for movement on its level meter. |
| The broadcast buffers or loses stream health | The stream bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the network may be shared or variable. | Test upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed, and avoid relying on a speed-test peak as sustained capacity. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after music begins | YouTube may have detected third-party material; a license may not cover livestreaming or the channel may not be allowlisted. | Stop using material whose live-use rights are unclear. Confirm the license scope with the rights holder and ask about Content ID allowlisting where relevant. Do not assume Creator Music covers live content. |
