For a straightforward standard-dynamic-range setup, use H.264 video, AAC stereo audio, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s encoder guidance is general; it does not specify a separate India-only FFmpeg configuration.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Install an FFmpeg build that supports the encoder and protocols you plan to use. The command below uses
libx264; not every FFmpeg build includes it. - Prepare your podcast audio and, if you want a picture on the live stream, a video source. This example sends a prerecorded video file as the live picture; a microphone-and-camera capture command needs device-specific input settings.
- Use only music, clips, images, and other material you have the rights to broadcast. A successful connection to YouTube does not establish that your content complies with copyright rules or YouTube monetization policies.
Choose resolution and bitrate
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. For broad compatibility, the example below uses H.264 and AAC. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says keyframes should never be more than four seconds apart. Its SDR guidance calls for square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709. Stereo audio guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| H.264 output | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s current H.264 ingest guidance, accessed October 3, 2026; the page gives no publication date. They are not measurements of an Indian internet connection or a guaranteed speed requirement for your location. YouTube advises allowing 20% upload headroom above your stream bitrate. Measure the actual outbound connection you will use, allow for other people and devices sharing it, and choose a resolution your computer can encode reliably. If you send a backup stream, budget for the primary and backup streams together, plus headroom.
Create the YouTube live event and get the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to create or select the event. YouTube’s workflow is documented in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Prefer the RTMPS URL when available; YouTube explains how to use its encrypted ingest endpoint in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, repository, or chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
- For a scheduled event, start the encoder early enough for YouTube’s preview to appear. Check the preview and stream health, then select Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready to begin.
Send a prerecorded podcast video with FFmpeg
This template reads a local prerecorded video and sends it to YouTube as a live feed. Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the quoted output with the exact RTMPS URL and stream key from your Live Control Room event. Keep the key private.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'RTMPS_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY_FROM_YOUTUBE'
What the settings do
-repaces a file input in real time rather than sending the file as fast as FFmpeg can read it. It is not a general requirement for live camera or capture-device sources. FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation shows real-time file pacing and FLV output: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation: RTMP.-r 30sets 30 frames per second. The GOP settings-g 60 -keyint_min 60give a 60-frame interval, or two seconds at 30 fps;-sc_threshold 0disables scene-cut keyframes so the interval stays predictable.-b:vand-maxrateset the video bitrate target and ceiling to 4.5 Mbps;-bufsize 9000ksets the rate-control buffer. That video bitrate is within YouTube’s current 720p30 H.264 range. The command does not scale the source, so it does not guarantee a 720p output: use a source at the resolution you intend to send, or add an appropriate scaling filter.-pix_fmt yuv420pis a widely compatible pixel format. The example is for SDR, not HDR.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2encodes stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s stereo audio guidance.-f flvselects the output container used for RTMP/RTMPS publishing. Use the event-specific URL from YouTube rather than copying a generic public endpoint.
If FFmpeg reports that the libx264 encoder is missing, check the encoders included in your installed build or choose an encoder that your build supports and that is accepted by YouTube. Do not assume a particular FFmpeg package includes libx264.
Using a live microphone and camera instead
There is no portable capture command that works unchanged across Windows, macOS, and Linux: FFmpeg input syntax depends on the operating system, audio backend, camera or capture device, and device names. First identify the correct audio and video inputs for your machine. Test microphone levels and audio/video synchronization, then apply compatible encoding and output settings like those above. Avoid turning up a microphone simply to make the meter look full; listen for intelligible speech without clipping.

Preflight and monitor the podcast
- Start the encoder before the planned start time, especially for a scheduled event, and wait for the preview in Live Control Room.
- Test representative speech, expected movement, and any music or other audio you plan to include. Check that YouTube receives both audio and video and that speech is clear and not clipping.
- Compare the chosen video bitrate plus upload headroom with measured outbound capacity. Shared Wi-Fi and other network use can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Open the watch page on a phone or another viewer device to check the audience-facing result.
- Monitor audio and video during the podcast. When the event is finished, end the live event in YouTube and stop the encoder.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing ahead of time and checking the preview and stream health: Streaming tips and encoder settings. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that is not a promise of archive retention in every account circumstance. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong event URL or key, a key copied incorrectly, or an incompatible endpoint. | Copy the URL and key again from the selected Live Control Room event, use its RTMPS URL where available, and keep the key private. |
| FFmpeg says the encoder is unavailable | The installed build may not include libx264. |
Check the build’s available encoders and use an included, YouTube-compatible alternative. |
| Stream health is poor or the feed stalls | Available upload capacity may be below the stream bitrate plus headroom, or the connection may be shared or unstable. | Measure outbound capacity during realistic network use, reduce resolution or bitrate if needed, and reserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| Speech is missing, distorted, or out of sync | Wrong capture device, low or clipping input levels, or a device-specific synchronization issue. | Confirm the selected input, test actual speech, adjust levels, and verify synchronization before the event. |
| Video looks wrong or is rejected | Source resolution, frame rate, pixel format, or encoding settings may not match the intended output. | Check the source and output settings, keep keyframes within YouTube’s guidance, and inspect the preview before going live. |
