You do not need a monitor to stream from a Linux VPS. A command-line encoder such as FFmpeg can read a video file or network input and send it to YouTube; you can administer the VPS over SSH and check the broadcast in YouTube Studio. This walkthrough covers a prerecorded file or loop. A live camera or desktop stream needs a separate capture source and input path.
What you need before you start
- A Linux VPS you can administer remotely, with enough sustained outbound bandwidth and CPU capacity for your chosen stream.
- FFmpeg installed, with an encoder suitable for your source and VPS.
- A video file or reachable network source. A VPS without a monitor does not create a camera or screen feed by itself.
- A YouTube live event and its ingestion address and stream key.
YouTube’s account-specific live activation requirements and exact Live Control Room screens can vary; confirm that your channel can go live before configuring the VPS. The steps below assume you can create or select an event and retrieve its ingest details.
Choose the source and streaming quality
Decide what the VPS will send
For a prerecorded broadcast, FFmpeg can read a local media file; a loop can repeat it. For live camera, desktop, or external video, you also need a reachable source or capture path. FFmpeg supports file, pipe, network-stream, and capture-device inputs, but the right input configuration depends on where that source is.

Measure the VPS before choosing resolution
Choose a resolution and bitrate your instance can sustain, with spare capacity for encoding and network variation. YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends H.264 video at 6 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube’s recommended stream settings, not a VPS sizing guarantee. “Mumbai” alone says nothing conclusive about the route to YouTube ingest or available sustained egress; measure from your own VPS and test the actual stream.

Apply YouTube’s encoder baseline
- Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use a supported video codec and AAC or MP3 audio.
- Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and the VPS’s demonstrated capacity.
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings as the final reference, since supported settings can change.
Choose an ingest protocol

YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison describes the protocol profiles and latency classes. For the standard encoder path here, use the event’s RTMPS address and preserve its hostname for TLS/SNI. YouTube RTMPS ingestion requires port 443.

Set up and start the stream
- Create or select the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and copy its server/ingestion address and stream key. Follow the endpoint and key shown for that event; do not assume a URL or key format.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Do not put a real key in a public command, shell history, screenshot, repository, or log. Store it in a protected configuration or environment mechanism appropriate to your system, and restrict access to that configuration.
- Inspect the VPS. Check its CPU architecture, available CPU and memory, installed FFmpeg encoders, and sustained outbound capacity. A generic speed test or successful SSH login does not prove the VPS can maintain the selected stream.
- Prepare the FFmpeg command. Use the file or network input you intend to stream, set an output matching the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate and two-second keyframe interval, and send it to the event’s RTMPS endpoint on port 443. Keep the endpoint hostname intact so TLS/SNI validation can work. Do not paste the stream key into a command that will be retained in shell history or exposed in process listings.
- Run it independently of SSH. Use a terminal multiplexer or a system service to keep the process running after your SSH session ends. Exact commands and service files depend on the Linux distribution and how you protect the key. Check the process status and service or session logs after disconnecting; ensure logs do not expose credentials.
- Verify before going public. Start with a private or unlisted/scheduled test event where available. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, inspect stream health and messages, and review the VPS process and logs. Test with movement and audio representative of the intended broadcast. YouTube advises testing beforehand and monitoring stream health during the event.
Test, monitor, and troubleshoot
Do not infer reliability from the server’s Mumbai location. Confirm sustained egress and encoding headroom on the actual VPS, then test the route to the event’s ingest endpoint with the intended media and settings.

During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and the VPS process. If the feed fails, check the endpoint, TLS connection, source availability, and whether the encoder or outbound link can sustain the selected settings before restarting.
