To stream a playlist of local videos on YouTube Live from an old laptop, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source: add the files in order, enable Loop Playlist if you want them to repeat, connect OBS to YouTube with a stream key, then check the preview and start the broadcast. First, confirm your channel can livestream and test whether the laptop and internet connection can handle your chosen settings. The setup is generally the same in India as elsewhere; YouTube account eligibility and the laptop’s capabilities still need to be checked.

How do I set up a YouTube Live video playlist on an old laptop?

This broadcasts video files from your laptop as a live encoder feed. It is different from making a YouTube playlist of existing videos for viewers to watch in sequence.

1. Check YouTube Live access before preparing the stream

In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live. YouTube’s stated requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check well before your planned start. Eligibility and activation depend on your channel; opening Live Control Room is the practical way to confirm access. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.

2. Check the laptop and install OBS and VLC

Identify the laptop’s operating system and graphics hardware before building the scene. OBS currently lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements. Meeting those baseline requirements does not guarantee smooth encoding: CPU load depends on encoder choice, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. The age of the laptop alone cannot determine whether it will work. Review the OBS system requirements and use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point.

Install OBS Studio and VLC. If OBS does not show a VLC Video source, check that VLC is installed and restart OBS. Match architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS’s documentation explains that its VLC Video source can make a playlist of media items, unlike the single-item Media Source: OBS Media Sources.

3. Add and order the local videos

  1. Open OBS and select or create the scene you want to use.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.
  3. In the source properties, add the local media files and arrange them in the intended playback order.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart at the first item after the last one finishes.
  5. Check the OBS preview and listen to the audio. If you have only one file to repeat, use Media Source and its separate Loop option instead.

Use files you are authorized to broadcast. Owning a copy or being able to play a file locally does not by itself establish that you have permission to retransmit its video or music on YouTube.

4. Choose a conservative output and test the laptop

Start with an output setting the computer and connection can sustain. YouTube’s published encoder recommendations include 720p at 30 fps with a 2 Mbps video bitrate and 480p at 30 fps with a 0.3 Mbps video bitrate. These are reference recommendations, not guarantees that an old laptop or a particular connection will hold the stream smoothly. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Run a speed test and compare the measured upload capacity with the total outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom beyond that total. If the laptop struggles, reduce resolution or frame rate and simplify the scene; if the connection is saturated, reduce the bitrate. Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health rather than assuming a short still-image test proves the setup is reliable. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the upload headroom recommendation.

5. Connect OBS to YouTube and go live

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. Start a stream now or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling gives you an upcoming watch page to share before the broadcast.
  2. Create or select the stream in Live Control Room. In OBS, select YouTube as the service if it is available, or enter YouTube’s stream URL as the server and paste the stream key into the encoder settings.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not share it or show it on screen; reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
  4. Select Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview, then confirm picture and audio.
  5. For a scheduled stream, select Go Live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Follow the current Live Control Room workflow for an immediate stream.

Refer to YouTube’s encoder instructions for the current stream setup flow.

6. End the broadcast and check the archive

When the playlist is finished, end the broadcast in Live Control Room and stop sending the feed from OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check your channel’s Live tab for the saved stream.

How do I loop videos on YouTube Live?

For several local files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. For one file, use Media Source and enable its Loop option. These settings repeat playback in the encoder feed; they do not create a YouTube watch playlist.

What internet upload speed do I need for YouTube Live?

There is no single upload-speed figure that guarantees a stable stream for every setup. Use a speed test, add up the total outgoing bitrate, and aim for about 20% spare upload capacity above it. YouTube’s reference video bitrates are 2 Mbps for 720p30 and 0.3 Mbps for 480p30. Audio and other stream data also use bandwidth, so do not treat the video bitrate as the entire connection requirement. If the speed test or stream health is poor, lower output settings and test again.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video is missing from Sources: Install VLC, restart OBS, and confirm that VLC matches OBS’s architecture; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  • The playlist stops at the last file: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
  • Video stutters or OBS reports encoder overload: Lower resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and test representative content. A laptop meeting minimum requirements may still be unable to encode the chosen settings smoothly.
  • YouTube reports dropped frames or stream health problems: Check upload headroom against total bitrate, reduce bitrate if needed, and run another test.
  • Go Live is unavailable: Check channel verification and restrictions, then allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  • There is no picture or sound in the preview: Confirm the VLC source is visible in the active scene, the correct files are selected, and audio is reaching OBS before clicking Go Live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos playing while the laptop is off, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an OBS setup. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, not on your laptop or home connection.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
