To play videos in random order on a YouTube live stream, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source: add your authorized video files to its playlist, turn on Shuffle Playlist, and optionally enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and private stream key from YouTube Studio, check the preview, and go live.
Before you set up the stream
Check that your channel can go live
Your channel must be verified and eligible for live streaming. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned stream. YouTube also requires live streamers to be at least 16 and says the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Prepare videos you have permission to broadcast
Gather the video files on the computer running OBS and confirm you have the rights needed to stream them. A video being publicly viewable on YouTube does not, by itself, give you permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube warns that copyright strikes or Community Guidelines violations can lead to a live stream being terminated, and Content ID claims may be made against an archived stream. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Install OBS and VLC, then build the shuffled playlist
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well.
- Add the media source. In OBS, open the scene you want to use, add a VLC Video Source, and add your local video files to its playlist.
- Turn on shuffled playback. Enable Shuffle Playlist in the source settings. OBS describes this as randomizing the playlist files’ playback order.
- Choose whether to repeat the playlist. Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart after the source reaches the end of the list. Leave it off if the stream should stop playing files when it runs out of media.
OBS documents shuffled playlist playback, but does not specify exactly when the order is reshuffled or promise a fresh independent random choice after every video or every loop. Treat Shuffle Playlist as randomized ordering, not as a guaranteed per-video draw. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and create a stream in Live Control Room, or open a stream you have scheduled.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s stream settings. The key authorizes the encoder to send its feed to YouTube; keep it private and do not share it.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, confirm it looks and sounds right, then select Go live.
- When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder as directed by the current interface.
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Interface wording can change, so follow the controls currently shown in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Test the picture, sound, and stream health
Before an event, run a test stream and check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Your encoder settings should match the codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send; upload capacity also needs to support the chosen bitrate.

For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p60. These are recommendations for those specific output formats, not universal settings for every codec or frame rate. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table to choose the values for your stream.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then make sure its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Check that OBS is sending to the stream URL and key for the correct Live Control Room stream. Keep the key private; if you suspect it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Live streaming is not available yet: Check channel eligibility and verification. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours; do not wait until the event starts to enable it.
- Playback stops at the end of the list: Enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video Source if you want the list to restart.
- The order does not appear to reshuffle when expected: OBS documents playlist order randomization but not a precise reshuffle schedule. Do not assume it selects a newly randomized file after every clip.
- Stream health is poor or playback stutters: Test before going live, check YouTube’s stream-health feedback, and verify that your encoder settings and available upload capacity suit the selected resolution and frame rate.
- The stream is interrupted over rights concerns: Use only material you are authorized to broadcast and check YouTube’s copyright guidance; an archived stream may also receive a Content ID claim.
