To play recorded videos overnight on YouTube, send a playlist from an encoder to a YouTube Live Control Room event, preview it, then start the event. The encoder—not YouTube Studio—plays and loops your local video files. Test the full setup before leaving it unattended: YouTube recommends network headroom and monitoring, but does not promise uninterrupted broadcasts, especially beyond 12 hours.
Before you set up an overnight stream
Confirm live-stream access
Enable live streaming and verify the channel in advance. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Its eligibility guidance also lists no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days and a minimum streamer age of 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-stream eligibility help before scheduling.
Clear every part of the program
Being the person who recorded a video does not necessarily mean you own every right in it. Confirm you have the necessary rights to stream all video, music, and other audio, and to retain an archive where applicable. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for rights on the content provider; live streams are also subject to copyright enforcement and Community Guidelines. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

With a local encoder, the computer, encoder, video files, and network connection must stay operational for the stream to continue. YouTube describes encoders as software or standalone hardware; this recorded-video workflow does not inherently require a camera, microphone, capture card, or particular encoder brand. A cloud service is another approach if you do not want playback dependent on a computer at home.

Set up the YouTube event and encoder
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Choose the Stream workflow to create an event or reuse appropriate settings. You can schedule an event in advance. The labels and available controls may change; consult YouTube’s encoder setup instructions if the interface differs.
- Prepare the recorded-video playlist in your encoder. Add the files in the intended order and set playback to repeat if you want a loop. The encoder or an optional service handles playback; Live Control Room does not turn arbitrary local files into a playlist.
- Copy the ingest details from Live Control Room. Enter the displayed server URL and stream key in the encoder’s destination or streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your channel. Do not share it, and reset it if it is exposed. YouTube explains stream controls and keys in Manage live stream settings.
- Choose the connection protocol supported by your encoder. For encrypted ingest, select YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint and confirm your encoder supports RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance. HLS is not the default for this basic URL-and-key workflow; YouTube describes it as an alternative for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP and notes its higher latency.
YouTube’s general encoder instructions specify the server URL and stream key connection, but they do not prescribe a universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, or encoder configuration for every recorded source. Set the encoder according to its own supported settings and the source you intend to play; do not assume a setting from a different encoder or format applies unchanged.
Test the stream before leaving it overnight
- Leave time for a complete rehearsal. YouTube recommends setting up early rather than starting at the last minute.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth sufficient for the selected bitrate plus 20% headroom. That is preparation guidance, not an uptime guarantee.
- Preview before going live. Start sending the encoder feed and wait for it to appear in Live Control Room. Check that the event is accessible on the intended channel or watch page, including on a mobile device if that matters to your viewers.
- Listen and watch the preview. Confirm the playlist advances as intended and that audio and video are present and in sync. Check any transition or repeat point that could reveal a playlist mistake.
- Prefer a wired connection when practical. YouTube stresses reliable connectivity and notes that a disruption can break a stream. Ethernet is a reasonable setup choice if available, but it cannot guarantee a stable connection.
For a higher-availability setup, YouTube discusses testing encoder failover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and check whether the player switches to a configured backup encoder. This is an advanced option, not a requirement for every creator. Details are in YouTube’s streaming tips.

Start the event, check it, and end it deliberately
- Start the playlist and begin sending the encoder feed to YouTube.
- Wait for the incoming signal and preview in Live Control Room. If the workflow requires it, select Go live to start the public event.
- Open the watch page using the intended visibility setting and confirm the stream is playing. Keep a way to check the event while it runs; unattended operation is not the same as guaranteed continuity.
- When the program is over, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder feed.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its documentation does not promise an automatic archive for longer streams, so do not rely on an overnight broadcast being saved if it may exceed that duration. See the encoder setup page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCopyright, repetition, and monetization
Technical ability to loop a playlist is separate from permission to rebroadcast it and from eligibility to earn revenue. YouTube’s video monetization policies apply to live streams. Its policy page, updated July 15, 2025, clarifies that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the inauthentic-content policy. A long stream or repeated playlist is not automatically monetization-approved; eligibility depends on the channel and content under YouTube’s current rules. Read YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common overnight-stream problems
The event does not receive a signal
- Confirm the encoder is sending to the server URL and stream key shown for the selected Live Control Room event.
- Check for an accidentally reused, mistyped, or reset key; keep the key private and replace it if compromised.
- If using RTMPS, confirm the encoder supports it and that the RTMPS endpoint is selected.
The preview appears, but viewers cannot watch
- Check whether the event still needs you to select Go live.
- Verify the event’s privacy and scheduled settings in Live Control Room, then open the intended watch page to confirm access.
The stream breaks or becomes unstable
- Check whether upload capacity can support the selected bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Check the network connection and, when practical, use Ethernet. Network disruptions can break a stream.
- For a setup that requires redundancy, test a backup encoder and confirm the player switches as expected before relying on it.
The video or audio is wrong, silent, or stops repeating
- Inspect the playlist order, repeat setting, and source files in the encoder. Live Control Room receives the encoder’s feed; it does not control local playlist playback.
- Rehearse the full sequence, including audio and the transition back to the start, before the overnight broadcast.
The archive is missing
Check the stream duration before assuming an archive should exist: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not longer broadcasts.
