To loop an ambient rain video on YouTube Live, put the recording in an encoder such as OBS, enable looping on its media source, connect the encoder to a YouTube encoder stream with the stream URL and key, check the preview, and start the broadcast. First confirm your channel is eligible and that you have the rights to stream both the video and its audio. An all-day broadcast may keep running, but YouTube does not guarantee a complete archive or full DVR rewind for streams longer than 12 hours.
Before you set up the stream
Check channel eligibility
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by a creator who is at least 16 to live stream. Requirements and Studio screens can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming help if you cannot start a stream.
Confirm rights to the rain video and sound
Use footage and audio that you own or are licensed to stream on YouTube. A recording of rain is not automatically rights-free: the particular file could include protected music, other audio, or visuals. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for obtaining the necessary rights, including music licensing rights where relevant. A copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast can result in an active stream being terminated.
Choose a file and decide whether you need a replay
For one repeating scene, a single video file is the simplest source. For several rain scenes, prepare a playlist. Check the clip’s beginning and end, image brightness, and sound level so the change at the loop point will not be jarring. This is a practical quality check, not a guarantee of a seamless transition.

Decide whether an archive matters before choosing to run one uninterrupted broadcast. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Keep a local recording if you need a complete copy, and consider planned sessions shorter than 12 hours if you want separate platform archives. Check each resulting archive rather than assuming it was saved in full.
Set up a looping rain stream with OBS
1. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Choose its visibility and other settings in Studio.
- Find the stream URL and stream key in the stream settings. The key is a credential that lets an encoder send video to your stream; keep it private and do not share it in a screenshot, recording, or public post.
2. Add the rain video to an OBS scene
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- Add a Media Source and select the rain video file on your computer.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source settings. OBS will restart the file after playback completes.
- Preview the scene and watch the file reach its end and begin again. Listen across the transition as well as watching it; check for a pause, abrupt sound change, black frame, or other unwanted break.
If you want multiple clips to cycle, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for that source type to be available in OBS. Review the transitions between playlist items as well as the final-to-first transition.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open OBS’s stream settings and select the YouTube service or enter the server details provided by YouTube.
- Enter the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Use the protocol and settings offered by the current encoder and YouTube stream configuration.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the picture and sound are correct before selecting Go Live if Studio presents that step.
YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS encoder workflows and HLS ingestion. HLS has specific transport requirements and higher latency than RTMP; looping a rain file alone is not a reason to choose HLS. Use it only if your encoder and stream configuration require it.
4. Test the setup and leave network headroom
YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate by 20%, and advises using a reliable connection, testing the setup, and monitoring audio and video. The needed bitrate and suitable output resolution depend on your file, encoder, hardware, and upload capacity, so there is no universal setting to copy for every rain stream. Run a private or unlisted test long enough to confirm that the file repeats, audio continues, and the connection remains stable before relying on the broadcast.

What to expect from an all-day broadcast
A looping source can keep supplying the same video while the encoder and connection continue sending it. That does not mean YouTube will preserve every hour as a replay or allow viewers to rewind through the full broadcast. YouTube Help warns that archives may not be captured for streams longer than 12 hours and that DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond that duration.
If continuous viewing matters more than a single uninterrupted session, you can plan shorter sessions and restart the stream between them. This requires handling each restart, and it does not guarantee archive behavior; verify the resulting recordings in Studio. If you need a complete replay, record locally as well.

The stream will not start
- Check eligibility: verify the channel, confirm there are no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and check the creator meets YouTube’s age requirement.
- Check the connection details: confirm the stream URL and key in OBS match the current stream in Live Control Room. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Check the Studio workflow: start the encoder feed, inspect the incoming preview, and complete the Go Live step if Studio requires it.
The video stops or the loop looks wrong
- Playback ends instead of repeating: reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled, or confirm Loop Playlist for a VLC Video source.
- The source is missing: confirm the file is still at the location OBS references and that it can be opened. For a VLC Video source, confirm VLC is installed.
- The transition is distracting: inspect the file endpoints or playlist order and adjust the media. The loop setting restarts playback; it does not smooth edits or normalize differences in sound and brightness.
The broadcast disconnects or looks unstable
- Connection interruption: YouTube notes that disruptions can break a stream. Test the actual connection and keep upload bandwidth above the stream’s total bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Uncertain output settings: do not assume a bitrate or resolution is suitable without considering the source, encoder, hardware, and available upload capacity. Test and monitor the picture and audio.
The broadcast has no complete replay or rewind
- It exceeded 12 hours: YouTube says longer streams may not be captured as archives, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Keep a local recording if completeness matters.
- You need platform archives: consider planned sessions shorter than 12 hours, handle each restart, and verify each archive. This is a practical way to manage the stated limit, not a guarantee that every archive will be complete.
YouTube ends the broadcast over copyright
Review the rights for both picture and sound in the file, including any music or other included audio. Replace material you cannot establish rights to stream; ambient subject matter alone does not establish permission.

Cost and equipment considerations
The OBS method uses your own computer and network while the encoder is running. The source workflow does not establish a universal hardware specification, bitrate, or connection speed; these depend on your media and setup. A reliable network and upload headroom matter, but YouTube does not require a particular cable or camera for a prerecorded rain stream. No camera or microphone is needed to send a prepared video file.
