You can rerun an esports tournament VOD as a YouTube Live broadcast by scheduling a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, sending the authorized recording through an encoder with the event’s stream key, checking YouTube’s preview, and then going live. First, confirm you have permission for the exact VOD and for both the live transmission and any replay archive: a video being public does not make it free to rebroadcast.

1. Confirm you have the rights to rebroadcast the VOD

Do not start with the encoder. Identify the specific event recording and who controls each element you plan to transmit: gameplay, tournament camera work, caster commentary, music, graphics, and sponsor material. The person or channel that posted the VOD may not control every component.

Check the game publisher’s current streaming policy and the tournament operator’s current rules. Ask the relevant rights holder whether permission covers all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A new live transmission of this existing recording, rather than only viewing or sharing the original VOD.
  • Your specific YouTube channel and the territories where the stream will be available.
  • Any monetization, attribution, or event-specific requirements that apply.
  • Keeping the resulting live-stream archive available for on-demand viewing.
  • Any private, unlisted, or other test transmission you plan to make.

These permissions are separate from the technical ability to send a video to YouTube. YouTube says that live streams are scanned for third-party content and may be replaced with a placeholder, warned against, interrupted, or terminated when a match remains. If you have a license but the rights holder uses Content ID, YouTube advises asking that owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Policies vary by game and event

Valve’s Dota 2 Community Stream Policy illustrates why checking the event rules matters. It limits community streams to DotaTV and content the creator made or licensed, and says operator-provided camera work and broadcast audio require operator authorization even if available through DotaTV. The policy also requires creators to comply with event streaming requirements. This is a Dota 2-specific example, not a rule for every game.

SEGA’s gameplay-video guidance is another example of publisher-specific terms: it addresses third-party intellectual property and says product-specific policies may take priority. Its stated conditions apply to individual users, so they should not be treated as a tournament-operator license or generalized to other publishers.

2. Prepare the YouTube broadcast and encoder

YouTube’s live-streaming production guide describes an encoder-based workflow. In broad terms, the broadcast is the YouTube event page; the stream is the incoming audio-video feed and its settings. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation distinguishes these objects and explains that stream configurations can be reused for broadcasts at different times. For a normal creator workflow, you do not need to use the API.

  1. Set up the encoder and video source. Choose an encoder that can play the authorized file and send its video and audio to YouTube. Configure the recording to play in the intended order. The YouTube sources cited here do not prescribe a particular encoder, computer, resolution, bitrate, or keyframe interval, so check the requirements and settings for the encoder you actually use rather than assuming a specific product or hardware is mandatory.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Select the stream workflow and create or schedule the broadcast. Enter the title and description, set the privacy level, and add a thumbnail if desired. If the rerun is for a later time, schedule it for the intended start.
  3. Copy the stream key into the encoder. Use the key for the correct event and ensure the encoder is pointed at the matching YouTube stream configuration. Treat the key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  4. Start sending the recording. Start the encoder’s playback and transmission. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed, then inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
  5. Go live from YouTube. Once the preview and event details are correct, use the control room’s go-live action. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it is not a substitute for confirming the event is ready in YouTube.

3. Preflight the event before viewers arrive

Review the scheduled event and encoder while there is still time to correct a problem. If you make a private or unlisted technical test, first verify that your permission covers that transmission too; YouTube recommends private or unlisted settings when you are not actually streaming.

4. End the stream and check the archive

When the rerun is finished, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder from sending the recording. Review the resulting archive and any copyright notices in YouTube Studio. Before promoting or leaving the replay available, confirm that your permission includes on-demand access; permission to transmit live does not necessarily establish archive rights. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the live stream completes if the creator chooses to archive it.
