To set up a VTuber stream, prepare an avatar, configure its tracking software, add the avatar and your content to a broadcast scene, then connect your streaming platform and test before going live. You need a device that can handle your chosen software and workload, stable internet, and a way to broadcast; a high-end PC, webcam, and microphone are not universal requirements.
Choose an avatar workflow
Start with the avatar type, because the apps and setup differ. Common options include Live2D, 3D, and PNG avatars; a tracking app intended for one type may not support another. This guide gives the most specific steps for a Live2D model using VTube Studio.
- Live2D: A rigged 2D model that can move in response to face tracking.
- 3D: A model used with software that supports 3D avatars and its tracking method.
- PNG: A static or expression-swapping avatar; choose software designed for that workflow.
If you need a model, you may commission one or obtain one from a creator. Check the model’s license for permission to stream, monetize, or otherwise use it as intended; terms vary by creator.
Prepare and import a Live2D model
VTube Studio’s Live2D import guidance calls for a model folder containing a model3.json index file, a .moc3 data file, a physics3.json file, and the model’s texture folder. If you are receiving a model from a creator, ask for the complete model folder rather than only one of these files.

- Locate VTube Studio’s Live2D models folder using the app’s documentation for your installation.
- Place the complete model folder there and import it through VTube Studio.
- If VTube Studio was already open while you copied the model, restart the program so it can detect the new files.
- Select the imported model and check that it appears before configuring tracking.
On first load, VTube Studio’s Auto-Setup looks for standard Live2D parameter names and ranges. If the model uses non-default parameter IDs, the automatic setup may not configure it correctly; you may need to set up the parameters manually.
Set up face tracking
VTube Studio supports face tracking with either a webcam or a smartphone. A phone used only as the tracking input does not also have to run the model, according to its getting-started guidance. Follow the current VTube Studio instructions for connecting your chosen device, then check that the avatar responds to your movements.
- Position the tracking camera or phone so your face is visible and reasonably well lit.
- Keep your face within the frame and check that the software can track the movements you expect to use.
- Test the result in the actual scene you intend to stream; tracking quality depends on your device, setup, and conditions.
A webcam is optional if you use a smartphone for tracking, and neither a camera nor a microphone is required simply to broadcast. Add a microphone if you want spoken audio, and test its level and clarity separately.

Build the broadcast scene
OBS is one software-encoder option. Create a scene that combines your avatar output with the content viewers should see, such as a game capture, background, and overlays. The exact capture method and menu labels can vary with the apps and versions you use, so consult their current documentation rather than relying on a universal menu path.

- Add the game or other content source, then add the VTube Studio avatar output using a capture method supported by your current software setup.
- Arrange and size the sources so the avatar does not obscure important content. Add a background or overlays only if you need them.
- Check the scene locally before broadcasting: confirm the avatar is visible, the game or other content is captured, and the intended audio sources are working.
OBS’s published compatibility requirements are not a guarantee that a computer can handle a particular stream. The actual load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, game, and scene complexity. Assess the full workload—game plus avatar plus broadcast scene—instead of relying on a universal “streamer PC” threshold.
Check your platform and go live
Before configuring the broadcast, confirm that your account can stream and review the platform’s current requirements. YouTube’s help page says a channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to use live streaming. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as a way to broadcast gameplay and overlays. Twitch Help describes stable internet and a video encoder as the basic needs for a stream.

- Choose the destination in your streaming platform and configure OBS or your chosen broadcast method using that platform’s current instructions.
- Review the scene and audio, then make a test before starting a public broadcast if your platform and account offer a suitable test option.
- Once live, check the platform’s stream-health indicators and confirm that viewers can see and hear the intended content.
Rules and software features can change, so check the current platform help pages and your account’s eligibility before scheduling a launch. Also review copyright rules for any music, game footage, or other material you plan to use, and confirm that your avatar license permits the intended use.
Choose equipment for your actual workload
A VTuber stream does not require one particular computer or a dedicated camera. Twitch says a powerful computer is not universally required, but the right capability depends on the content and encoding load. For example, running a game, tracking software, and a complex scene together can demand more than broadcasting a simple scene.
- Core needs: a device that can run the chosen tracking and broadcast software, stable internet, a broadcast method or encoder, and an avatar workflow.
- Tracking input: a compatible webcam or smartphone for VTube Studio face tracking; choose according to the software you use.
- Camera and microphone: optional for streaming itself. A camera is relevant if your avatar workflow uses webcam tracking; a microphone is for spoken audio.
- Performance checks: test the game, avatar, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene together. Basic software compatibility alone does not establish that your machine can sustain your preferred settings.
Twitch Help’s “How Do I Stream FAQ,” accessed October 3, 2026, puts the baseline plainly: “All you need to start streaming is a stable internet connection and a tool that can broadcast video to the internet, also known as a video encoder.”

Fix common setup problems
The Live2D model does not appear
Check that you copied the full model folder, including model3.json, .moc3, physics3.json, and textures, into the app’s Live2D models folder. If the app was running during import, restart it and try again.
The avatar appears but does not track
Confirm that the intended webcam or smartphone tracking input is connected and visible to VTube Studio. Improve the framing and lighting, then check whether the model uses non-default parameter IDs that need manual setup.
The avatar or game is missing from the broadcast
Check the scene sources and the capture method supported by your current versions of OBS and the avatar software. Preview the complete scene locally before going live.

The stream struggles under load
Reduce the workload or adjust stream settings and scene complexity, then test again. OBS compatibility requirements do not guarantee performance at a particular resolution or frame rate; the game, encoder, and avatar all contribute to the load.
The platform will not let you start a YouTube live stream
Check channel verification and whether the account has a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Confirm current eligibility in YouTube’s help information before troubleshooting the encoder.
