To keep a 24/7 YouTube music stream running through a power cut, back up the encoder and the entire network path—not just the PC—and size the UPS or inverter for their measured power draw and the outage duration you need to cover. No UPS can guarantee the internet provider’s network will stay available, so test power and connectivity separately.

1. Measure what must stay powered

List every device needed to keep the stream operating unattended. Depending on your setup, that may include the streaming computer or dedicated encoder, the modem or optical network terminal (ONT), the router, and essential audio or video equipment. Include a monitor only if it must remain on for the stream to continue.

  1. Measure actual input power. Use each device’s power rating as a starting point, but measure consumption during the intended stream where possible. Account for peaks and startup behavior, not just idle draw.
  2. Separate essential from optional loads. Leave nonessential equipment off the backup. Every additional load reduces available runtime.
  3. Add the required loads together. Use the combined wattage to size the UPS or inverter, then check its VA rating and peak or overload capability too.

Schneider Electric India recommends choosing UPS watt capacity 20–30% above the total connected-device wattage. That is sizing guidance, not a guarantee for a particular load or model. Fuji Electric explains the relationship as watts = VA × power factor: VA is apparent power, while watts represent real power. Check that both the UPS’s watt and VA limits cover your measured load.

2. Match battery capacity to the outage you want to ride through

Decide how long the stream should survive a cut, then use the UPS or inverter manufacturer’s runtime data for your measured load to select a battery arrangement. A headline VA rating does not tell you how long the system will run. Runtime depends on load, inverter losses, battery condition, temperature, age and discharge limits.

Schneider Electric India says basic UPS units often provide 5–15 minutes for safe shutdown; this is a general description, not a runtime promise for your equipment. Fuji Electric advises checking battery discharge characteristics for the intended autonomy. Batteries may be connected in series to raise bank voltage or in parallel to raise capacity, but the configuration must match the UPS design—do not improvise a battery bank.

3. Choose a UPS or inverter that suits the equipment and power conditions

Compare the specifications that determine whether the backup will work with your setup, not just the advertised VA figure.

  • Output watts and VA: Both must cover the combined load and expected peaks. Check overload limits as well.
  • Runtime and expansion: Look for runtime data at a load close to yours and confirm whether external battery expansion is supported.
  • Output and transfer behavior: Verify waveform, output voltage and frequency, and how the unit behaves when mains power fails. Check compatibility with the computer’s power supply and network equipment.
  • Power conditioning: If your mains supply has frequent voltage problems, compare voltage-regulation behavior as well as outage transfer behavior.
  • Battery and ownership costs: Check battery type, configuration, replacement cost, local service, charging behavior, warranty, installation requirements, noise and monitoring or alerts.

Standby (offline) UPS units switch from mains to inverter during an outage. Line-interactive units also provide voltage-correction functions. Online, double-conversion units continuously supply equipment through a conversion path, avoiding transfer time on power failure. ENERGY STAR describes these operating types; Schneider Electric says line-interactive is usually sufficient for home and office use, while online double conversion is suited to loads requiring very high continuity. The more expensive topology is not automatically necessary: choose according to equipment sensitivity and local power conditions.

4. Put the modem or ONT and router on backup

If the encoder stays powered but the network equipment shuts off, YouTube will stop receiving the feed. Connect the modem or ONT and router to the UPS too, and include their draw in your total. If you use a separate DC backup unit for network equipment, match its voltage, polarity, connector and power requirements exactly.

Local backup only covers your side of the connection. Your ISP’s upstream equipment or network may lose power or experience an outage. YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” If uninterrupted availability is important, investigate a separately powered or redundant internet path, and test it rather than assuming it will take over successfully.

5. Configure and test the stream before relying on the backup

  1. Set up the encoder and YouTube stream. In the encoder, use YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube says the key functions like the stream’s password and address, so keep it private.
  2. Run a representative preflight. Test with the same video and audio activity, encoder settings and network path you will use for the continuous stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
  3. Check upload headroom. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Check the actual outbound connection; a speed result that does not reflect sustained streaming conditions is not enough.
  4. Simulate a mains outage while streaming. Confirm that the encoder remains powered, the router and modem or ONT stay connected, YouTube continues receiving the feed and stream health remains acceptable.
  5. Repeat after changes. Retest after changing equipment, batteries, encoder settings or network arrangements.

6. Troubleshoot the failure path

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The encoder turns off during a cut The UPS is overloaded, its battery runtime is insufficient, or the computer’s power supply is incompatible with its output. Recheck measured load against both watt and VA limits, inspect peak behavior, and consult runtime data at your load. Verify output compatibility and battery condition.
The computer stays on but YouTube loses the feed The router, modem or ONT is not backed up, or the ISP connection has failed upstream. Back up all local network equipment and test the complete connection during a simulated outage. Consider a separate or redundant internet path if the ISP link is the weak point.
A DC backup unit does not power the router or ONT Voltage, polarity, connector or current requirements do not match. Check the network device’s exact input requirements and the DC unit’s output before connecting it.
The stream disconnects despite local equipment staying on Upload capacity or internet connectivity is insufficient or disrupted. Check YouTube stream health and sustained outbound bandwidth. Keep bitrate below available upload capacity with the recommended 20% headroom, and test any backup connection.
Runtime is shorter than expected The actual load, battery condition, temperature, inverter losses or discharge limits differ from assumptions. Measure the running load and compare it with the manufacturer’s runtime and battery discharge data. Retest with the installed battery and equipment.
