To use a travel router with hotel Wi-Fi, connect the router to the hotel network in its repeater or Wi-Fi-as-WAN mode, then complete the hotel’s sign-in page from a phone or computer connected to the router. Once that device has internet access, connect your other devices to the router’s local Wi-Fi. The exact menus vary by brand and firmware; the steps below use GL.iNet Router Docs version 4 as a concrete example.
Before you start
Have the hotel Wi-Fi name (SSID) and any password ready. You will also need the travel router’s setup details, which are usually printed on its label or included in its manual. A phone or laptop is useful for configuring the router and completing the hotel’s browser-based login.
Hotel rules and authentication systems still apply when you use a router. A travel router can simplify connecting your devices, but it does not grant permission to bypass device limits or other access controls. Check the hotel’s terms or ask staff if you are unsure whether routers are allowed. GL.iNet describes this hotel use case in its hotel Wi-Fi guidance.

- Power on the router. Wait for it to start, then connect your phone or computer to the router’s setup Wi-Fi using the network details on the device label or in the manual.
- Open the router’s admin page. Enter its local address in a browser. GL.iNet devices use
192.168.8.1by default; other brands may use a different address. Set an administrator password if the router asks you to. - Open the internet connection settings. On GL.iNet Router Docs version 4, select INTERNET → Repeater → Connect. Look for a similarly named repeater, Wi-Fi-as-WAN, or wireless uplink feature on other routers; menu labels are not universal.
- Select the hotel network. Scan for the hotel’s SSID, choose it, enter its Wi-Fi password if required, and apply the connection. If the network is hidden or does not appear, GL.iNet documents a manual Join Other Network option. A network may also be absent if the router does not support the band or channel in use.
- Complete the hotel sign-in. Keep your phone or computer connected to the travel router, open a browser, and follow any hotel login prompt, such as accepting terms or entering a room number and password. Do not assume the page will open automatically.
- Connect your other devices. After the setup device can reach the internet, connect your laptop, tablet, phone, or other devices to the travel router’s local Wi-Fi.
For GL.iNet Router Docs version 4, see the repeater setup guide and the captive-portal guide. Use the current instructions for your exact model and firmware if its interface differs.

What repeater or Wi-Fi-as-WAN mode does
In repeater mode, the travel router connects upstream to the hotel’s wireless network and provides its own local Wi-Fi for your devices. GL.iNet says its repeater feature uses WISP mode by default: the router creates its own subnet and acts as a firewall between that subnet and the public network. This describes GL.iNet’s documented configuration, not every router or every possible setting. See the GL.iNet repeater documentation.
If the hotel login page does not appear
A router can join the hotel SSID without yet having usable internet. Try these checks in order:

- Check the upstream connection. Confirm that you selected the correct hotel network and entered its Wi-Fi password correctly. Check the router’s supported bands and channels if the SSID is missing or the connection will not establish.
- Reconnect to the router and open a browser. Ensure the setup phone or computer is still connected to the travel router’s Wi-Fi, then try to reach the hotel login page.
- Follow instructions for your router’s firmware. Captive-portal settings and menu paths can differ between versions. GL.iNet publishes separate instructions for Router Docs version 4 and Router Docs version 3.
- Ask hotel staff about registration requirements. Some networks use verification or device-registration rules that a router cannot resolve on its own. GL.iNet documents MAC-address cloning as an option for some cases, but it is not a guaranteed fix; strict verification may require hotel staff to whitelist the router’s factory MAC address. Cloning makes the router present another device’s address to the network, so follow hotel policy and consult staff before changing that setting.
