Connect your modem or active Ethernet wall port to the TP-Link router’s WAN/Internet port, join the router’s default Wi-Fi or a LAN port, then follow the setup wizard in the Tether app (if your model supports it) or a browser. The exact screens and supported modes depend on your router model and hardware revision, so use the matching TP-Link guide when the instructions differ.
Before you connect the router
Identify what supplies your internet connection: a separate modem, an ISP modem/router combo, or an active Ethernet wall port. A standard wireless router connects to an existing internet feed; modem-router combos and portable or cellular routers have different setup requirements, so follow the instructions for that exact device.
If an ISP device already provides routing, decide whether the TP-Link will replace it as the main router or serve as an access point. The appropriate mode depends on which device should handle routing and which features you need.
Connect the modem or wall feed to the router
- If you have a separate modem, unplug its power before connecting the cables.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the modem’s Ethernet output to the TP-Link router’s WAN/Internet port. If your internet comes from an active Ethernet wall port, connect that port to the router’s WAN/Internet port instead.
- Power on the modem and wait for it to restart, then power on the TP-Link router. TP-Link’s classic-interface setup guide describes this sequence.
Use the WAN/Internet port for the incoming connection, not one of the router’s LAN ports. The port labels and hardware layout can vary by model.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Connect your phone or computer to the TP-Link router
Join the default Wi-Fi network using the network name and password printed on the router’s label. The default details and label location vary by model; do not assume a universal network name or password.
Alternatively, connect a computer to one of the router’s LAN ports with Ethernet. You can use a wired connection to reach the local management page even if the router does not yet have internet access.

Set up with Tether
If your model supports TP-Link Tether, connect your phone to the router’s default Wi-Fi and follow the app’s router setup flow. TP-Link’s Tether setup guide covers compatible models; available screens and options depend on the router.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Enter the internet settings your ISP requires
Choose the connection type specified by your internet provider. TP-Link’s setup guidance gives Dynamic IP, PPPoE, and Static IP as examples, but your provider’s requirements determine which one to select.

Choose a mode if another router is already connected
If the TP-Link is connected behind an existing router, decide which device should perform routing. TP-Link’s New-interface setup guide flags Access Point mode as an option to consider when connecting to another router to avoid Double NAT issues. The right choice depends on your network layout and the features you need; consult the ISP or existing-router documentation if you are uncertain.

Check that the router is online
- Wait for the router to apply the settings, then reconnect your phone, computer, and other devices to the new Wi-Fi name and password if you changed them.
- Try opening a website or using another internet-connected app.
- If internet access fails, check that the modem or wall cable is connected to the TP-Link WAN/Internet port, then confirm the connection type and any ISP-provided credentials or VLAN requirement.
- If the issue remains, restart the modem and router in the sequence recommended by the device instructions, then consult TP-Link’s support page for the router’s exact model and hardware version.
Setup screens, operating modes, and device-specific troubleshooting can differ across models and hardware revisions. Use the model-specific support page rather than relying on a reset procedure or indicator-light description for another router.
