Start with the space and the gear, then choose furniture that fits both. For a compact PC setup, IKEA’s UTVISNING desk is a useful size reference at 47 1/4 × 23 5/8 inches; a console nook may work better with a TV bench and flexible storage. Measure room for the chair, access and cables before buying.
1. Decide what the station needs to do
Before choosing furniture, decide whether the setup is for PC or console, how many people will use it, and which devices need a permanent place. IKEA’s small-room guide recommends planning around who will play and what the room can fit.
- For PC: list the monitor or monitors, computer tower, keyboard and mouse, headset, and any controllers or accessories that need to stay nearby.
- For console: account for the TV or display, console, controllers, headset, and storage. IKEA suggests considering a TV bench with storage for a TV-based setup.
- For shared use: identify which items must remain set up and which can be put away. That affects how much work surface and storage you need.

2. Measure the spot, including chair movement
Measure the usable wall width and floor depth where the station will sit. IKEA lists its compact UTVISNING gaming desk at 47 1/4 inches wide by 23 5/8 inches deep, which gives you a concrete reference for a small PC desk.

- Check for baseboards, outlets, radiator or vent locations, and door or drawer swings that could conflict with the desk.
- Account for the chair pulled out far enough to sit down and stand up, not just the desk’s footprint.
- Plan how power and display cables will reach outlets without crossing a walking path or catching on the chair.
- Leave access to assemble, clean behind, and reach plugs or controls.
There is no sourced minimum room size or standard clearance figure for this setup, so judge the fit against your actual furniture and movement rather than relying on a made-up threshold.
3. Choose a desk that matches the equipment
UTVISNING: compact PC example
IKEA describes the UTVISNING as intended for compact play. Its included monitor shelf, cable-management tray, two headphone hooks, and straps for suspending a computer tower can help organize a PC station without adding separate accessories. IKEA says the shelf can hold up to two 24-inch flat screens, and that the keyboard and mouse can slide beneath it when not in use. Those are IKEA’s product statements; check your actual monitor bases, viewing arrangement, and sightlines before relying on the shelf capacity.

If you need more space for equipment and have more floor area, IKEA’s UTESPELARE measures 63 × 31 1/2 inches—substantially wider and deeper than UTVISNING. IKEA describes a mesh section at the back to allow airflow and six manual height positions from roughly 26 3/4 to 30 3/4 inches in its measurements section. Use the comparison to match surface area and documented features to your gear. A monitor-size capacity statement does not guarantee that every monitor stand or two-screen arrangement will fit.
4. Match the chair and storage to how the room is used
IKEA’s UK guide distinguishes between console seating priorities such as softness, support, and easy movement, and PC-chair features such as castors, headrest, seat depth, lumbar support, armrests, or tilt tension. Choose according to the person and use; the guide is retailer selection advice, not independent evidence of ergonomic outcomes. IKEA describes mesh as the most breathable among the upholstery categories it compares, and says MATCHSPEL has a mesh back with an easy-to-wipe coated-fabric seat.

In limited floor space, prioritize furniture that can move or do more than one job. IKEA recommends flexible furniture for small spaces, while its US gaming setup gallery shows EKET storage and IVAR cabinetry holding gaming accessories alongside household items. 5. Organize cables and manage screen glare
Use the desk’s cable features where available, then gather power and signal leads so they do not snag when the chair moves. Keep outlets accessible, and check that the cable route does not become a trip hazard. IKEA describes UTVISNING’s tray as a place to gather cables and sockets; its small-room guide also recommends looking for built-in cable management.

For a screen near a window, IKEA’s US gallery recommends room-darkening curtains when daylight falls on the monitor and causes glare. It also suggests a directed work lamp beside the desk. Backlighting or RGB lighting is optional styling; the gallery does not establish that any lighting choice prevents or treats eye strain.
