The simplest way to run several phone cameras as one livestream is to use Canon’s Live Switcher Mobile app on iPhones or iPads. One device becomes the switcher, the others join it as camera sources over the same Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot, and the switcher sends the finished program to YouTube, Facebook, Twitch or any RTMP service you configure. Canon’s setup guide documents a limit of three video inputs.

This guide walks through that route in full, then covers the two alternatives: a computer or hardware encoder, and Roland’s AeroCaster system for more inputs and physical controls. Everything here is taken from the vendors’ published setup material. Canon’s guide is undated, and the device list it contains can change, so confirm both before you buy or rely on a particular phone.

What you need before you start

  • Compatible Apple devices. Canon’s guide lists iOS and iPadOS 17, 18 and 26 and gives examples of confirmed devices. It does not guarantee operation on every model, so check the current list in Canon’s guide before you rely on a device.
  • The app on every device. Live Switcher Mobile must be installed on the primary (switcher) device and on each secondary camera device.
  • A shared network. All devices need to reach each other over one Wi-Fi network or one phone’s hotspot. Canon also lists mobile data as a network option. Wired connections are not supported by this app.
  • A destination ready. Have a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, or the Facebook, Twitch or RTMP details you plan to use.
  • Charged devices. Each phone runs a camera and a network connection at the same time, so plan for battery and heat (see the troubleshooting table below).

Choose your route

Pick the route before you buy anything. The three options differ in how many sources they handle, what hardware they need and how much you can control the audio.

Route Best for Inputs and workflow Cost Trade-off
Canon Live Switcher Mobile Phone-only productions with compatible iOS devices Up to three video inputs. Secondary phones join wirelessly. The switcher connects directly to YouTube, Facebook or Twitch, or to an RTMP destination. Canon labels some features free with limits and others paid. Current plan details are not stated here; check Canon directly. iOS-only and wireless-only. Operation is not guaranteed on every model.
Computer software or standalone hardware encoder External audio and video hardware, or a more advanced multi-camera and multi-microphone production YouTube documents both software and hardware encoders. You enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder. Not stated in the sources; it depends on the software or hardware you choose. Adds a computer or encoder to set up and keep running.
Roland AeroCaster More inputs, physical controls and hardware audio connections An iPad running the AeroCaster LIVE app with the VRC-01 hardware. Feeds from up to four remote mobile devices plus the iPad camera. Not stated in the sources; check Roland. More equipment than a phone-only setup. Streams to YouTube, Facebook Live, Twitch and custom RTMP over Wi-Fi or cellular.

For two or three phone angles with minimal kit, Canon’s app is the shortest path. Move to an encoder when you need to mix external audio or run an advanced production. Move to AeroCaster when you need more than three inputs or physical controls.

Set up the Canon route, step by step

  1. Install and open the app on the primary device and on every secondary device.
  2. Put all devices on one network. Use the same Wi-Fi network, or turn on Personal Hotspot on one iPhone (Settings > Personal Hotspot) and join the other devices to it.
  3. Set the primary. On the switcher, choose Primary smartphone and set the orientation you intend to stream in.
  4. Add each camera. On each additional device, choose Secondary smartphone(s), then Share camera. Canon’s guide also offers Share screen, which sends the device’s screen rather than its camera, so use it only when you want to show a screen.
  5. Pair the devices. Follow the app’s connection prompts. Do not move on until each secondary device appears as a source on the switcher.
  6. Set the destination. Connect YouTube, Facebook or Twitch through the platform settings in the app. For any other service, enter the streaming URL and stream key that the provider supplies.
  7. Assign the angles and check the picture. Confirm every feed has the orientation you chose in step 3.
  8. Check the sound on the destination (see the audio section below), then start the stream from the switcher and confirm it appears as live on the platform.

Connecting the destination

YouTube through the switcher

Canon’s guide lists YouTube Live as a direct destination. Set up the channel and confirm live streaming is enabled before the event, because the first live setup on a channel can take longer than the app takes to pair. Canon’s guide states the following about the app itself:

“Live Switcher Mobile is not a live streaming platform.” This is from Canon U.S.A.’s setup guide, which carries no publication date. The app sends the program to a platform account you already own. It does not provide that account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create, then choose Go live and the streaming option. YouTube changes these labels from time to time, so follow the current steps in YouTube Help.
  2. Copy the Server URL and the Stream key that YouTube shows.
  3. Paste both into the server and stream key fields of your encoder.
  4. Start the encoder, then confirm the stream’s health in YouTube Studio before you make it public.

Encoder settings that matter

Canon’s guide does not publish these settings, so this table applies to the encoder route only.

Setting Starting point Why it matters
Keyframe (I-frame) interval 2 seconds YouTube’s encoder guidance asks for this interval. Check YouTube Help for the current value.
Resolution and frame rate 1080p30 or 720p30 for most phone-camera productions Higher resolutions and frame rates need more upload bandwidth, which is the most common cause of a stream that stalls.
Video bitrate Use the range YouTube lists for your resolution and frame rate. Keep it below the upload speed you can sustain with headroom. A bitrate the connection cannot carry drops frames. No fixed figure is given here because YouTube revises its lists.
Audio AAC audio at the bitrate YouTube currently lists for stereo Keeps the audio compatible with YouTube’s ingest.

Framing the angles and setting the audio

Framing

  • Give each angle one job. For example, a wide presenter view on the primary and a close-up on a secondary.
  • Hold each phone still. Use a smartphone tripod mount as an optional aid. The setup guides do not require one.
  • Match the orientation. Mixed portrait and landscape feeds look wrong on the program output.

Audio

YouTube’s encoder guidance names an external microphone and headphones as common equipment for casual streams. Advanced setups add multiple microphones, cameras, a mixer and an encoder. Canon’s guide does not describe how audio is routed in the switcher app, so test the sound at the destination before the event: speak, switch angles, and listen to the stream’s audio on a second device.

YouTube rules to check before you go live

  • Channel eligibility. Live streaming must be enabled on the channel. Check the status in YouTube Studio before the day of the event.
  • Copyright. Music, clips or recorded programmes playing behind a camera feed can trigger a claim that mutes or blocks the stream. Clear the rights before you go live.
  • Reused content. If you monetise the stream, YouTube’s reused-content rules can affect whether it qualifies. Check the current policy.
  • Community Guidelines. These apply to live content as it airs, and a live stream can be stopped mid-broadcast if it breaks them.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
A secondary phone does not appear on the switcher Different network, or the app has no Local Network access Join the same Wi-Fi network or hotspot. Enable the app under Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network. Relaunch the app on both devices.
The pairing drops during the stream A phone sleeps or loses its network Keep the screens awake and the devices charging. Charging does not change the wireless link, and Canon’s guide does not support wired device connections.
A feed is sideways or letterboxed Orientation differs between devices Set the same orientation on the primary and every secondary device.
The stream stalls or stutters Upload speed is lower than the chosen quality Lower the resolution or frame rate, then test the upload speed at the venue. Watch the stream’s health in YouTube Studio.
The phones overheat or the battery drains fast Several phones are running cameras and networking at once Plug in where you can, close other apps, shorten the session and keep the phones out of direct sun. Canon’s guide does not state battery life, so test it before a long event.
The stream does not show as live on YouTube Wrong or missing key, or the destination was not saved Re-check the stream key and server URL against YouTube Studio, then restart the stream.
Music is muted or the stream is blocked A copyright claim on background audio Replace the audio with cleared material or your own sound.

Cost and data notes

  • The app’s plans. Canon labels some features free with limits and others paid. Confirm current plans and prices with Canon before the event.
  • Mobile data. Using cellular data for the stream uses data on every phone that carries a feed. Check your plan before a long broadcast.
  • AeroCaster. Hardware cost is not stated in the sources. Check Roland before comparing it with a phone-only setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your multi-camera session is over and you want a channel to stay live with recorded material, StreamNeo can do that from the cloud. It streams to YouTube only, and it plays uploaded videos on a loop. It does not switch live cameras, so it does not replace the setup above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Android phones as the camera angles?

Canon’s guide covers iOS and iPadOS devices only. This article does not cover Android-based setups, so check the vendor’s device list before assuming one will work.

Can the switcher stream to two platforms at once?

The sources reviewed do not say whether Live Switcher Mobile can send to more than one destination at a time. Confirm this in the app before you plan a multi-platform event.

What happens if the switcher phone receives a call during the stream?

The sources do not address interruptions. Turn on Do Not Disturb before you go live, and run a short test to see how the app behaves on your device.
