Pair a Samsung SmartTag in the SmartThings app, then enable the alert that matches what you need. On SmartTag2, Notify when left behind warns when you move away from the tag; Notify me when it’s found reports a later location update for a disconnected tag. Those are different notifications.
What you need before setup
- A Samsung Galaxy SmartTag and a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet with SmartThings installed.
- Location services enabled on the phone or tablet for the documented Find left-behind alert behavior.
- The tag activated and close enough to the phone to be detected during pairing.
Samsung’s feature coverage and app screens vary by SmartTag model, app version, device support, and region. Follow the prompts shown for your specific tag rather than assuming every generation has the same menus.
Pair your SmartTag with SmartThings
- Activate the tag. Press its button to prepare it for pairing.
- Open SmartThings and add the device. Follow the on-screen prompts to find and register the tag. For the original SmartTag and SmartTag+, Samsung’s guided flow includes setup preferences such as location and room.
- Use the model-specific setup method. SmartTag2 pairing supports manual setup or QR-code scanning; choose the method offered in the app and complete its prompts.
- Open SmartThings Find. Select the paired tag to view or manage it. Samsung documents map, nearby search, navigation, and ring options for the earlier SmartTag family; available tools depend on the model.
Samsung’s setup instructions are available for the original SmartTag and SmartTag+ and for SmartTag2.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTurn on an alert for leaving the tag behind
For SmartTag2, open SmartThings and follow Life → Find → More → Notify when left behind, then turn on the switch. Samsung also lets you add a safe location, such as home. When you move away from the tag at a safe location, the left-behind notification is suppressed.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
Samsung’s support guidance says location services must be enabled on the phone or tablet for this alert behavior. For the original Galaxy SmartTag, Samsung says the Find left-behind feature requires a Galaxy phone or tablet running Android 12 or later. Confirm the instructions for your exact model because feature availability and menu paths are not universal.
Choose the right SmartTag2 notification
| Notification | What it tells you | SmartThings path |
|---|---|---|
| Notify when left behind | Alerts you when you move away from the tagged item. A safe location can suppress the alert. | Life → Find → More → Notify when left behind |
| Notify me when it’s found | Notifies you when the tag’s location is updated, even when the tag and phone are not connected. It is for a later update on a disconnected or lost tag, not an immediate departure warning. | Life → Find → More → Notify me when it’s found |
These SmartTag2 notification descriptions and paths are documented by Samsung’s SmartThings Find instructions.

Troubleshoot pairing and alerts
The tag does not appear when you try to pair it
- Keep the tag within Bluetooth range while SmartThings searches for it.
- Try resetting the tag, then search again. Samsung’s pairing guidance recommends checking range and resetting if the tag is not found.
- Use the reset procedure for your exact model. Samsung’s original SmartTag instructions describe removing and reinserting its CR2032 battery as part of reset guidance. Do not assume that battery or procedure applies to SmartTag2.
You do not receive a left-behind alert
- Confirm location services are enabled on the phone or tablet.
- Check that Notify when left behind is switched on for the tag.
- Check whether the place where you expect the alert is set as a safe location; safe places suppress the documented departure alert.
Samsung’s instructions describe these settings, but do not establish one universal troubleshooting procedure for every model, phone, app release, and region.
