Set up a rugged in-vehicle computer as a complete vehicle system: select a computer for the agency’s applications, match it to a compatible dock and vehicle-specific mount, plan power and connectivity, configure security, and assess placement for occupant safety. Because vehicle interiors, computer models, and dock requirements vary, have a qualified vehicle equipment integrator assess the exact configuration before installation.

1. Choose a computer that fits the work

Start with the tasks the computer must support, such as dispatch, records, mapping, video, or other agency applications. Decide whether personnel need a convertible laptop/tablet or a dedicated tablet, and whether they will remove it for off-vehicle use.

Compare the requirements of the actual shift and environment: screen readability in sunlight, glove use, temperature, shock and vibration, battery needs, and required ports and wireless radios. Ruggedness and connectivity specifications are model-specific. For example, Getac’s B360 Plus specifications describe a particular product configuration; they should not be treated as specifications for every rugged computer.

2. Match the dock and mount to the exact vehicle and computer

Confirm that the dock is made for the selected computer model, then check that its mounting hardware fits the vehicle and can be serviced without interfering with the interior. A dock may provide locking, port replication, vehicle power input, or antenna pass-through, but available features differ by model and variant.

As one model-specific example, Getac’s B360 Vehicle Dock (PMT) page lists USB, serial, LAN, HDMI, and 19 VDC input; it also describes optional tri-RF pass-through and variants listing a 120 W vehicle adapter. Confirm the current dock variant and compatibility before procurement. Do not infer that these connections or power details apply to another dock.

Getac describes integrated police vehicle solutions, while Panasonic describes emergency-response vehicle solutions and says its docks are stress- and vehicle-impact-tested and Panasonic-certified. These are manufacturer descriptions, not an independent head-to-head comparison. Compare actual system documentation, serviceability, support, and installed lifecycle cost for the agency’s chosen vehicle and computer.

3. Plan vehicle power with the installer

Have the integrator verify the dock’s required input, the specified vehicle adapter, and compatibility with the vehicle electrical system. For the cited B360 dock, the listed input is 19 VDC and certain variants list a 120 W vehicle adapter; verify the selected variant rather than applying those figures to another configuration.

There is no universal fuse size, wire gauge, ignition-sense scheme, or battery-drain procedure established for these systems. Those details depend on the vehicle, adapter, dock, and installation. Do not use a generic wiring recipe in place of vehicle-specific installation guidance.

4. Plan network, antennas, and peripherals

List the connections the operational workflow requires, then confirm the selected computer and dock can support them. Check agency network access, cellular carrier and bands, Wi-Fi, GPS, and interfaces for radios, cameras, or other peripherals. Determine whether the dock’s available ports and any antenna pass-through match the exact computer configuration.

Getac describes external high-gain antennas for challenging coverage and optional antenna pass-through on the cited dock. Whether either is useful depends on the required radio bands, computer configuration, carrier, and local coverage. Validate coverage in the actual service area rather than assuming an antenna option will solve every connection problem.

5. Configure security and fleet management

Work with agency IT and security staff to define the device’s software image and controls before deployment. Specify authentication, encryption, remote management, update handling, and procedures for sensitive data. Getac’s public-safety materials describe security features, but the controls available depend on the unit and software configuration; verify them for the devices being deployed.

6. Assess mounting position for safety and workflow

Have a qualified upfitter assess the mount location in the exact vehicle, model year, and interior configuration. The screen must be usable without obstructing the driver’s view or compromising safe operation. The mount must not intrude into air-bag deployment areas or compromise occupant protection. A location that works in one vehicle is not proof that it is safe in another.

NHTSA’s current air-bag guidance recommends keeping at least 10 inches between an occupant and a frontal air-bag cover, maintaining a proper seating position, and moving the seat as far back as possible while still allowing comfortable pedal reach. This is occupant guidance, not a certification or prescribed mounting location for a computer.

NHTSA’s April 28, 1981 patrol-car computer interpretation discusses how interior-impact requirements and restrictions on commercial modifiers making safety equipment inoperative may apply. It is historical guidance, not a modern mount certification or approval. Use current vehicle manufacturer service information and a vehicle-specific assessment.

7. Commission the system in the actual vehicle

Before fleet deployment, the integrator and agency should check the installed computer, dock, mount, power, network, and peripherals together. Use an acceptance checklist such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Computer and dock compatibility confirmed against current model documentation.
  • Mount is secure, serviceable, and positioned for safe visibility and reach.
  • Occupant protection and air-bag function are preserved.
  • Dock locking and release work as intended, including vehicle mounting and dismounting workflow.
  • Vehicle start and shutdown behavior and power continuity meet agency requirements.
  • Network coverage and required antennas work in the intended service area.
  • Required peripherals and agency applications function in realistic workflows.

These are practical commissioning checks for an integrated setup, not a claim that a particular configuration has been tested. Record the accepted vehicle, computer, dock, adapter, mount, and software configuration so that replacements or later installations can be checked against the same requirements.

What to compare before choosing a system

Evaluate complete configurations, not just the computer’s ruggedness rating. Useful comparison criteria include:

  • Exact computer and dock compatibility.
  • Vehicle-specific fit, serviceability, and occupant-safety assessment.
  • Dock input power and adapter requirements.
  • Ports, peripheral support, and antenna pass-through.
  • Removal and re-docking workflow.
  • Screen readability and operating conditions.
  • Documented certifications for the named model and configuration.
  • Security, fleet management, vendor support, and installed lifecycle cost.
