To connect a new TCL TV, first identify whether it runs Roku TV or Google TV: the setup prompts and Wi-Fi menus differ. Have your Wi-Fi network name and password ready, then follow the matching steps below and confirm the TV reports that it is connected.
Before you start: identify the TV platform
Use the platform named on the initial screen or in the TV’s interface. TCL’s setup steps differ between Roku TV and Google TV, and screen labels can vary by model and software version. If neither set of instructions matches your screen, follow the prompts shown on the TV and consult the manual for your exact model. TCL’s Roku TV setup guidance and Google TV setup guidance cover their respective paths.
Before starting, find the Wi-Fi name (also called the SSID) and its password. Passwords are case-sensitive, so enter capital letters and symbols exactly as supplied.
Complete the first-time setup
Roku TV
- Turn on the TV and choose a language.
- When prompted, choose Set up for home use. TCL says Home mode provides energy-saving options and access to TV features; Store mode is intended for retail display and may limit features.
- Continue through the guided setup until the TV asks you to connect to a network. Depending on the model, it may scan for Wi-Fi networks or first ask whether you want a wired or wireless connection.
Google TV
Follow the on-screen initial setup prompts. Keep the Wi-Fi name and password handy; the TV may ask for them during setup. Google account sign-in may also be part of the setup depending on the path and features you choose, but signing into an account is separate from connecting the TV to Wi-Fi.

Connect the TV to home Wi-Fi
Roku TV
- Press Home on the remote.
- Open Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless.
- Select your Wi-Fi network, enter its password, and choose Connect or follow the displayed prompts.
If your network is not listed, choose Scan again if that option appears. For a network that does not broadcast its name, use the private or hidden network option during setup and enter the network details.
Google TV
- Open Settings > Network & Internet. On some models, press the Home button and then the remote’s gear or settings button to reach Settings.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is on, then select your home network.
- Enter the password and choose Connect.
Follow the labels on your particular TV if they differ slightly; TCL’s Google TV network instructions describe the general route.

If your TCL TV will not connect to Wi-Fi
The Wi-Fi network does not appear
- Wait for the network list to refresh or scan again.
- Check that the router is turned on and that other devices can see the network.
- Temporarily move the TV closer to the router to test the signal. Distance, walls, and metal objects can weaken Wi-Fi.
- If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other band. Which bands are available depends on the router and TV model.
The password is rejected or the TV will not join
- Re-enter the password carefully, including uppercase letters and symbols.
- Check whether another device can connect to the same network.
- Restart the router and the TV, then try again.
- On Google TV, you can forget the saved network and reconnect by selecting it and entering the password again.
- On Roku TV, run the network check. If necessary, reset the network connection through Roku’s advanced system settings.
TCL provides additional Roku TV network troubleshooting and Google TV troubleshooting for cases these steps do not resolve.

The TV says it is connected, but apps do not work
Try another app and check whether another device on the same network can access the internet. If only one app fails, the issue may be specific to that app; if other devices also cannot get online, check the router or internet service. TCL’s platform-specific troubleshooting pages can help narrow down the remaining issue.

Use Ethernet if your model has a port
If your specific TV has a built-in LAN or Ethernet port, connect it to the router and choose the wired or Ethernet option in network settings if prompted. Confirm that the status reads Connected. Check the model specifications or the TV’s ports before buying an Ethernet cable; not every TCL TV supports a wired connection.

Use a phone hotspot as a fallback
A hotspot works like another Wi-Fi network: turn it on from your phone, then select its network name on the TV and enter its password. TCL has hotspot instructions for Google TV, Roku TV, Fire TV, and Android TV in its mobile hotspot guide. Streaming and TV updates can use substantial mobile data, and your carrier plan may limit hotspot use.
What happens after the TV connects
A Roku TV automatically checks for and downloads available software updates after connecting to the internet. Roku setup then continues to activation and Roku account linking. On Google TV, account sign-in is a platform-specific setup and personalization step; Roku activation does not apply to every TCL television.
