To move your Kindle books to a new device, connect it to Wi-Fi and register it to the same Amazon account used on your old Kindle. Your account library can then sync or deliver purchased books to the new device. Sync also carries reading position, notes, and highlights when the devices are online. You do not need to deregister the old Kindle just to set up another one.

Before you start

Have the new Kindle, the Amazon account credentials associated with your books, and your Wi-Fi network name and password ready. Amazon provides separate setup instructions for different models, including the 2026 Kindle release, 11th Generation Kindle, and Kindle Paperwhite; wording and available setup options can vary by model.

Set up and register the new Kindle

  1. Turn on the Kindle and choose a language. Depending on the model, you may also be asked to choose a location.
  2. Choose Set up on this Kindle to enter details on the device, or Set up with your phone if that option appears.
  3. Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi.
  4. Follow the prompts to register it to the Amazon account that holds the books from your old Kindle.

Amazon’s phone-based Simple Setup uses the Kindle app and requires Amazon Device Simple Setup to be enabled. The model instructions specify Bluetooth; on Android, Location Services are also required. The 2026 Kindle setup instructions say to update the Kindle app first. For model-specific steps, use the relevant 2026 Kindle, 11th Generation Kindle, or Paperwhite guide.

Find and download your books

After registration, connect the Kindle to the internet and let it sync. Open the Library and check All, not just a filtered view. Books associated with the registered account may appear there; select a title to download it if it is not already on the device.

Manually deliver a missing purchased book

  1. On Amazon, open Manage Your Content and Devices and sign in to the account that purchased the book.
  2. Open Content, choose Books, and select Deliver or Remove from Device.
  3. Choose the new Kindle from the registered devices and apply the change.
  4. Return to the Kindle and run Sync again.

Amazon’s manual delivery instructions apply to devices registered to the purchasing account. They do not establish a process for moving purchases between separate Amazon accounts.

What transfers—and what may not

Reading position, notes, and highlights

Amazon says Sync saves reading position, notes, and highlights to its servers and makes them available across Kindle devices and apps linked to the account. Sync is enabled by default, but the Kindle must have an internet connection. Amazon also warns that notes, highlights, or bookmarks made while Sync is off may be lost when it is turned back on. See Update Your Sync Settings for Kindle.

Personal documents and files stored on the old Kindle

For personal documents, Amazon identifies Send to Kindle as a way to put documents in the Kindle library on Kindle devices and apps. Amazon’s setup guides also describe USB file transfer for specified models, but they do not establish one universal procedure for copying all local files from an old Kindle to a new one. Do not assume that connecting the two devices will migrate every downloaded book, document, or annotation.

Troubleshoot setup and missing content

  • The Kindle will not register: Check the account credentials, then use the registration help linked from the applicable Amazon setup guide.
  • Wi-Fi is missing or will not connect: Check the network name and password, make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off, and follow the Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions in Amazon’s content troubleshooting guide.
  • A purchased book is missing: Confirm the Kindle is online, run Sync, clear any Library filters, and manually deliver the title from Manage Your Content and Devices. If it is not listed in the account’s content, check whether the digital order completed.
  • Progress or notes are missing: Confirm the Kindle is online and Sync is enabled. Keep in mind Amazon’s warning about activity created while Sync was off.
  • The title still does not appear: Restart the Kindle and check the Library again.

If you are giving away or selling the old Kindle

Setting up a replacement does not require removing the old Kindle from your account first. If you are selling or giving it away, Amazon recommends a factory reset to remove its content and user settings; follow its deregister and reset instructions.
