For a new Windows gaming PC, finish Windows setup, run Windows Update and restart, then check Device Manager and install only the drivers your specific hardware needs. Review Windows Security and test the display, network, sound, input devices, and peripherals. Windows Update is the right first stop; use the PC or component maker’s official support page when a needed driver is missing or model-specific.

How do I set up a new gaming PC?

  1. Finish Windows first-use setup. Windows 11 Home requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account during first-use device setup. Internet access is also needed for Windows updates and some feature downloads. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications.
  2. Install Windows updates. Go to Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when prompted. Microsoft recommends restarting after updates finish even if Windows did not request it. Windows Update installs recommended drivers automatically, but optional driver updates require your review. See Microsoft’s guide to recommended and updated hardware drivers.
  3. Review optional driver updates. Open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates. Select a driver only if it applies to a device in your PC and is appropriate for its model and Windows version; do not install every listed item indiscriminately.
  4. Check Device Manager. Search Windows for Device Manager and look for unidentified devices or devices reporting a problem. If something is missing or malfunctioning, use the relevant manufacturer’s official support page to find a compatible driver.
  5. Review Windows Security. Open Windows Security → Device security to review security-processor (TPM) and Secure Boot information. Under Core isolation, review Memory integrity. It requires hardware virtualization to be enabled in UEFI/BIOS. If Windows identifies an incompatible driver, check the device maker’s site for a compatible update rather than disabling protections as a routine fix. See Microsoft’s Device Security guidance.
  6. Restart and test the PC. Confirm the display, network, sound, keyboard, mouse, and attached peripherals work as expected. If a device is missing or not working, revisit Device Manager and check the appropriate official support page.

Which drivers do I need to install?

There is no universal driver checklist for every gaming PC. A clean Windows installation may need chipset, graphics, or network drivers, but the exact set depends on the PC, motherboard, graphics hardware, peripherals, Windows version, and vendor support. Device Manager can help identify hardware that needs attention. Lenovo’s ThinkCentre P3 Gen 2 Windows Installation Guide, for example, documents driver installation as part of setting up that particular system; it is not a universal list for other computers.

Choose the source that fits the hardware

Source When to use it What to check
Windows Update Start here for recommended drivers and available updates. Recommended drivers may install automatically. Optional driver updates are manual; review them for applicability before installing. Microsoft guidance.
PC maker’s support page Use it when Windows Update does not provide a needed driver, or when a driver is specific to a prebuilt model. Match the exact PC model and Windows version. A prebuilt system’s maker may provide packages customized for that model. Microsoft recommends getting a missing driver from the hardware manufacturer. Microsoft guidance.
Component maker’s support page Use it for a component-specific driver when the PC maker does not provide the needed package. Confirm compatibility with the actual component and Windows version. For a discrete graphics card, follow the relevant GPU vendor or PC maker’s official support route; no single release is established as best for all systems.

Should I install Windows updates before my graphics driver?

Run Windows Update first, restart, and then check whether the graphics hardware is working and whether it needs a driver from the PC or GPU maker. This follows Microsoft’s guidance to use Windows Update for recommended drivers and the hardware manufacturer when a needed driver is unavailable there. If Windows Update offers an applicable graphics driver, it is an available option; do not assume every PC requires a separate manual installation.

What security checks matter on a new gaming PC?

Windows 11’s published minimum requirements include TPM version 2.0, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, and a graphics card compatible with DirectX 12 or later using a WDDM 2.0 driver. Microsoft also lists 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage as minimum requirements. These are compatibility thresholds, not recommended gaming specifications or measures of gaming performance. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and Windows 11 specifications.

Use Windows Security to inspect the device’s security status. Memory integrity may be unavailable if hardware virtualization is not enabled in UEFI/BIOS, or if an incompatible driver is present. Microsoft advises seeking a compatible driver from the device manufacturer when a driver blocks the feature. Secure Boot helps protect the startup process; turning off Windows Driver Policy reduces security. Avoid disabling Secure Boot or driver protections as a general performance tweak. See Microsoft’s Windows Driver Policy and its Device Security guidance.

When is a USB drive useful?

A USB storage drive is a conditional setup aid, not a required purchase. It can transfer a driver package to a PC that cannot get online, or supply a storage-controller driver during a Windows installation that needs one, such as a RAID setup. Lenovo’s installation guide for the ThinkCentre P3 Gen 2 illustrates a manufacturer-specific installation workflow; follow the instructions for your own PC rather than assuming it needs the same driver.
