Connect the new Apple TV 4K to your TV and power, then follow the on-screen setup. Choose Set Up with iPhone to add your Apple Account and Wi-Fi settings more quickly. To carry over apps and Home Screen appearance, enable One Home Screen on both Apple TVs using the same Apple Account. Apple’s guidance does not promise a complete transfer of every setting, app state, or third-party login.
What you can transfer to a new Apple TV
Apple documents two useful parts of moving to a new Apple TV: setting up with an iPhone or iPad can add your Apple Account and Wi-Fi settings, and One Home Screen can keep apps and Home Screen appearance up to date across Apple TVs associated with the same Apple Account. One Home Screen is available for the default profile only. Apple’s One Home Screen guidance describes the feature.
These steps are not documented as a full device clone. Apple does not say they transfer every device preference, app-specific data, or third-party service credentials. Open your apps on the new Apple TV and sign in again if prompted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrepare the TV, network, and devices
- Use a TV or display with an HDMI port and an internet connection. Have your Wi-Fi network name and password ready if you plan to connect wirelessly.
- Keep your iPhone or iPad nearby if you want to use the assisted setup. An Apple Account is needed for account-linked services, purchases and rentals, and App Store downloads.
- Apple requires an HDMI cable. For a 4K HDR TV, Apple specifies a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. See Apple’s Apple TV 4K connection guidance.
- If you prefer Ethernet, check that your Apple TV model has an Ethernet port. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi does not have one.
Connect and set up Apple TV 4K
- Connect Apple TV to the TV with an HDMI cable, then connect Apple TV to power.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input connected to Apple TV.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. When offered, choose Set Up with iPhone or iPad, then follow the instructions on both devices. Apple says this can automatically add your Apple Account and Wi-Fi settings. Apple’s setup instructions also describe manual setup.
- If setting up manually, use the Apple TV screen to join Wi-Fi and sign in with your Apple Account.
- Complete any remaining prompts that apply, such as provider sign-in, assigning Apple TV to a room in the Home app, or adding users. Available prompts can vary by feature and region.
Sync apps and Home Screen appearance
On the old Apple TV
Open Settings and enable One Home Screen for the default profile. Apple’s feature guidance describes using One Home Screen to keep apps and Home Screen appearance up to date across Apple TVs associated with the same Apple Account.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
On the new Apple TV
Sign in with the same Apple Account, then enable One Home Screen for its default profile as well. The feature is limited to the default profile, so it does not synchronize Home Screens for additional profiles.
Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet
Wi-Fi is the wireless setup option; Ethernet is available only on models with an Ethernet port. If your Apple TV has a port and you prefer a wired connection to your router, connect an Ethernet cable before or during setup. The Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi model has no Ethernet port, so it must use Wi-Fi.

Prepare the iPhone or iPad for assisted setup
Apple recommends checking that the iPhone is updated to the latest iOS, signed into iCloud with the Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled, and has iCloud Keychain and Bluetooth turned on. Connect it to your home Wi-Fi network. Apple’s troubleshooting steps cover setup issues.
