There is no single set of picture values that works best on every 4K TV. Start with a picture mode that suits your room and what you watch, make sure each HDMI source is using a signal format the TV and port support, then adjust only what looks wrong. Menu names and available features vary by model, year, firmware and region, so use your exact model’s manual for detailed controls.

Before you change picture settings

Finish the TV’s initial setup and identify its exact model and region. Manufacturers do not use identical menus across product lines or years; Samsung, for example, publishes separate instructions for 2022-and-newer Canadian models and 2021-and-older sets. Treat paths below as examples for the named brand and supported models, not universal instructions.

The room and the video source matter as much as the TV’s capabilities. LG notes that room lighting, screen reflectance, picture settings and source content all affect the picture a viewer sees. That is why copying someone else’s numerical settings can produce a worse result on your set.

Choose a picture mode for the room and content

For films and TV in a dim room

On supported Samsung TVs, Movie mode is intended for television and movies in a dark room. FILMMAKER MODE is intended to preserve the director’s creative vision, but Samsung warns that it may look darker than other picture modes. Select a mode that looks right in your viewing conditions rather than treating either preset as a universal answer.

For a bright room or mixed viewing

Try the mode that looks comfortable in the room where you watch most often. LG likewise advises choosing a picture mode based on environment, preference or video type. A mode that feels pleasing in daylight may be too bright or otherwise unsuitable for dark-room film viewing; adjust for your real use rather than chasing a label such as “best.”

Check picture size, light output and basic controls

  1. Check aspect ratio or picture size. In the Picture menu, confirm the image fills the screen as intended without cutting off subtitles, edges or interface elements. The right setting depends on the source and TV.
  2. Set screen light output for the room. Adjust the TV’s backlight or screen-light control, where available, until the image is comfortable in your usual lighting. Samsung distinguishes backlight or screen light output from other picture controls in its US guidance.
  3. Adjust other controls only to address a visible problem. Brightness, contrast, sharpness and color controls can have different names and behavior across models. Samsung’s Canada guidance covers these controls, but does not make one value appropriate for every set. Consult your model’s manual instead of copying values from another TV.

LG’s general guidance puts the point plainly: “In addition to the TV’s capabilities, room lighting, screen reflectance, picture settings and the video content all affect the actual picture you see on screen.” (LG Support)

Set up each HDMI-connected device

A streaming box, game console or Blu-ray player may need an HDMI input setting changed before it can send a higher-quality signal. On some supported Sony BRAVIA models, the path is Settings → Channels & Inputs → External inputs → HDMI signal format. Select the format appropriate to the device and the specific HDMI port; available formats depend on the TV model and input.

Sony cautions that an enhanced format can cause picture or sound output problems with incompatible equipment. If that happens, return the input to Standard format. This is a Sony-specific example, not a menu path to expect on every brand.

Use an HDMI cable rated for the signal you want

A working cable does not need replacing just because the TV is 4K. Match the cable to the signal supported by both the source and the TV input. In Sony’s listed use cases, a Premium High Speed HDMI cable rated for 18 Gbps supports its specified 4K high-quality format; 4K at 100/120 Hz or 8K calls for an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 48 Gbps. These are Sony’s documented requirements for those use cases, not a blanket upgrade recommendation for every 4K setup. (Sony HDMI signal format and cable guidance)

Choose gaming settings for responsiveness

Use Game Mode when low input latency matters and your TV supports it. Samsung says Game Mode optimizes speed, with a possible slight decline in graphics quality. That is a trade-off: choose responsiveness for games where it matters, or use another picture mode if image presentation matters more.

For high-refresh-rate or variable-refresh-rate gaming, the console, TV model and HDMI port all need to support the feature. Sony’s guide discusses 4K/120 Hz and VRR on supported models; it does not mean every 4K TV or port supports either feature. Check the model’s port labels and specifications, then select a suitable HDMI signal format for the console. (Sony BRAVIA HDMI signal format guidance)

Confirm the streaming source is delivering the format you expect

Connect the TV to your home network and check that the app or external streaming device is actually providing the desired resolution and HDR format. Sony describes Wi-Fi setup under Network & Internet in its Help Guide and notes that 5 GHz may help streaming quality where supported by the TV and region. (Sony Help Guide: Wi-Fi setup)

A separate Sony support result for an individual model says a streaming-service picture setting may need to be set to Auto or High for best 4K/HDR output. That instruction is model- and service-specific; check the guidance for your TV and app rather than assuming the same control exists everywhere. (Sony streaming-service picture guidance)

Decide whether calibration is worth doing

Try the TV’s built-in picture modes and basic adjustments first. Samsung documents Smart Calibration for supported televisions using a compatible phone, with availability varying by model and region. It also describes calibration discs for use with a Blu-ray player. Both are optional tools, and the available guidance does not establish a guaranteed improvement or say every new TV needs professional calibration. Check compatibility before investing time or money.
