To set up a Meta Quest 3, prepare a Meta account, a phone or tablet with the Meta app, Wi-Fi, a charged headset, and the controllers’ AA batteries. Then connect the headset to Wi-Fi, install its software update, pair it with the app, map a safe boundary, and try First Steps before browsing for other apps.
What you need before setup
- A Meta account and the Meta mobile app, signed in on a phone or tablet. The CDC OneLab VR setup guide uses a mobile device in its instructions; it does not establish that every current first-time setup path requires one.
- A Wi-Fi network.
- A charged headset and AA batteries in both controllers. The CDC guide says the headset charging cord and controller batteries are included.
- A clear place to play, with enough room to map the boundary you intend to use.
Set up the account, Wi-Fi, and headset
Follow the prompts shown on your headset and phone. These steps reflect the sequence in the CDC OneLab VR setup guide; menu names may change, so use current on-screen prompts or Meta support if your screens differ.
- Create a Meta account if you do not already have one, then install the Meta mobile app and sign in.
- Charge the headset, check that the controllers have AA batteries, and power on the headset.
- In the headset, open Quick Settings from the taskbar and connect to Wi-Fi.
- Accept the license agreement and let the headset download and install its software update. Keep it connected to Wi-Fi while the update completes.
- Open the Meta app and go to Menu > Devices, then follow the prompts to pair the headset. If automatic pairing does not finish, enter the PIN displayed in the headset when the app asks for it.
Choose and set up a boundary
Before putting on the headset, clear the floor of furniture, pets, cables, and other hazards. The boundary system helps show where the mapped play area ends; it does not make an obstructed space safe.
Meta recommends an overall roomscale area of 9 ft x 9 ft, with a 6 ft x 6 ft playable area clear of obstructions. If you have less room or plan to play seated, choose the stationary option instead of roomscale. Separately, the CDC OneLab VR setup guide says to have at least 6.5 square feet of open space. That is the CDC guide’s stated minimum, not a replacement for Meta’s larger roomscale recommendation.

- When prompted, select the boundary setup option that matches how you will play: roomscale for movement around the space or stationary for compact, seated play.
- For roomscale, follow the headset’s prompts to map the clear floor area as the outer boundary. The system creates a rectangular playable area within the perimeter you map.
- Check the displayed area before continuing. Move obstacles out of it or redraw the boundary if needed.
As you or the controllers approach the playable area’s edge, the headset can show wall and floor markers. Passthrough can fade in to reveal your physical surroundings. Meta’s developer documentation describes Quest 3 passthrough as full-color with depth estimation; these visual cues are useful orientation aids, not a substitute for keeping the area clear.
Try First Steps, then find apps
Start with First Steps to practise controller use, navigation, and basic interactions. The CDC OneLab VR guide recommends it for that purpose. Afterward, browse the Meta Horizon Store for other apps. Meta says the store and its search are available on the headset, in the mobile app, and on the web; availability and listings can vary.

If pairing or setup does not match these steps
- The app does not pair automatically: look for a PIN on the headset and enter it in the app if prompted.
- You cannot find a menu named here: follow the current prompts in the headset or app. Setup screens and labels can change.
- The headset has not updated: confirm it is connected to Wi-Fi and allow the update to finish before continuing with pairing.
