To set up your Lenovo Legion Go S, first check whether it runs SteamOS or Windows 11; the first-run steps and update locations differ. Connect to Wi-Fi, complete the on-device setup, and install the updates for that edition. For SteamOS, wait through the initial update and automatic restart. For either edition, keep the charger connected during a BIOS update and do not interrupt firmware installation.
Before you turn on the Legion Go S
- Check what is in the box. Charger contents vary by configuration and country: Lenovo lists configurations with a 65 W USB-C adapter and others with no adapter. Check your packaging and product configuration before buying a charger. Lenovo PSREF
- Give the handheld power. Charge it before lengthy updates or gameplay. Lenovo specifically instructs users to connect power before a BIOS update. Lenovo Legion Go S user guide
- Identify the operating system. Lenovo sells Legion Go S configurations with Windows 11 or SteamOS, and the setup and update paths below are different. Check the product label or the first screen you see. Lenovo support manuals
How to set up the SteamOS edition
Finish the first-run setup and update
- Power on the device and choose your language and time zone.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. The network must be able to reach Steam Network for the initial update to proceed, according to Lenovo Support’s SteamOS setup instructions.
- Let the update run and allow the device to restart on its own. Lenovo says the Legion logo may remain on screen for approximately 10 minutes during this initial update reboot. Wait rather than forcing a shutdown or restart. Lenovo Support
- When the Steam sign-in screen appears, log in with your Steam account.
Check for later SteamOS updates
- Open Steam Menu > Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Check for updates, apply any available updates, and restart when prompted.

Find the main SteamOS controls
The Steam Menu provides access to the Store, Friends & Chat, and Settings. To use the desktop interface, choose Power > Switch to Desktop. Use the desktop shortcut to return to Gaming Mode. Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS FAQ

How to set up the Windows edition
Complete Windows first-run setup
- Follow the Windows prompts on the handheld, connect to Wi-Fi, and sign in with your Microsoft account if you choose to do so.
- Review the privacy choices shown during setup and select the options you want.
Windows prompts and their presentation can change over time, so follow the screens displayed on your device rather than relying on a fixed screen-by-screen sequence.

Check Lenovo drivers and BIOS updates
- Open Legion Space > Settings > Disks and Drivers.
- Select Check for Updates and install only updates offered for your device. Lenovo directs Windows-edition owners to this area for driver and BIOS update checks. Lenovo Legion Go S Windows user guide
- For a package downloaded manually, confirm the exact machine type on Lenovo Support before installing it.
Connect power before starting a BIOS update and do not interrupt the installation. Lenovo warns that the display may stay black for nearly two minutes during firmware installation. Lenovo Legion Go S Windows user guide
Optional accessories: what you do and do not need
You do not need an accessory to complete initial setup. The built-in microSD card reader supports microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards, making a compatible card an optional way to expand storage. Which update path should you use?
