Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse a local Git pre-commit hook to scan staged changes and block a commit when a secret is detected. A hook can prevent a new commit, but it does not automatically erase secrets safely, cannot stop a developer from bypassing it, and cannot undo exposure from an earlier commit. This guide configures Gitleaks with the pre-commit framework, then explains how to handle findings and previously committed credentials.
What a pre-commit secret hook does—and does not do
Git runs a pre-commit hook before it creates a commit. If the hook exits with a non-zero status, Git aborts that commit. The hook should scan staged changes—the content Git is about to record—then stop the commit and report a finding without unnecessarily printing the full credential.
This is detection and prevention for a proposed commit, not automatic secret removal. If the scanner flags a real credential, edit the source, stage the corrected content, and run the check again. A developer can bypass Git hooks with git commit --no-verify, and the pre-commit framework also supports skipping a named hook. Treat a local hook as an early warning layer, not an unbreakable security boundary.
Set up Gitleaks with the pre-commit framework
This setup uses Gitleaks, whose upstream documentation provides a pre-commit integration and staged-change scanning. Install Git, Python and the pre-commit framework for your operating system first. Then add a configuration file at the repository root and install the hook in that clone.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose a supported Gitleaks release. Check the current Gitleaks repository for the supported release and hook definition. Pin the release revision rather than tracking an unpinned moving version. The revision below is deliberately a placeholder: replace it with the release revision you verified.
- Create
.pre-commit-config.yamlin the repository root with this configuration:repos: - repo: https://github.com/gitleaks/gitleaks rev: <pinned-current-release> hooks: - id: gitleaks - Install the hook: from the repository directory, run
pre-commit install. This configures the hook for the current clone; each developer needs the hook installed in their own clone unless the team provisions it centrally. - Test it: stage a change and make a commit attempt. Confirm that the hook scans the staged content and that a finding prevents the commit. Review the scanner’s output and your team’s exception process rather than assuming every match is a credential.
Keep the pinned revision current through a deliberate update process. Recheck the upstream repository for the release and hook ID when updating the configuration, because release examples and repository contents can change.
Fix a finding without committing the secret
First determine whether the reported value is an active credential or a false positive. For a real secret, remove it from the proposed staged content and change the application to read it from an environment variable or a secret-management service instead of hardcoding it.

- Edit the affected file so it no longer contains the credential.
- Stage the corrected content, then inspect it with
git diff --cached. This review matters because the staged version—not necessarily the version currently visible in your editor—is what the commit will record. - Run the hook again by attempting the commit. If it reports another finding, investigate and correct that value before proceeding.
For a confirmed false positive, use a narrow, reviewed exception that targets the specific non-secret. Do not blanket-ignore scanner output. Avoid broad staging without review, especially after editing a file to remove a credential.
Choose additional protection at the right point
Different controls run at different stages and have different limits. Use them in layers rather than relying on one check.

| Control | When it runs | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
Local pre-commit hook |
Before a commit is created; the configured scanner can inspect staged changes. | Useful for fast feedback, but each clone needs installation and the hook can be skipped or bypassed. |
Git pre-push hook |
Before a push is sent to a remote. | Can provide a later local check, but remains a local hook and is not a replacement for commit-time feedback or remote controls. |
| GitHub push protection | At push time for supported secret types when enabled. | Coverage is limited to supported secrets; availability and behavior can depend on account or plan. GitHub documents cases involving prior alerts and scan timeouts, so do not treat it as a guarantee that every secret will be blocked. |
GitHub documents push protection for supported secrets in its command-line push protection guidance. Enable it where available, and include hook installation in developer onboarding so the local check is not accidentally absent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If a secret was already committed or pushed
Assume a real credential is exposed once it has been committed or pushed, even if the repository is private. Revoke or rotate it first to prevent unauthorized use. Removing a file from the current working tree does not remove its earlier contents from Git history.

If history cleanup is warranted, follow the hosting provider’s procedure. GitHub documents using git-filter-repo for a history rewrite; its sensitive-data-removal guidance describes --replace-text for replacing text in non-binary files across repository history and notes that --sensitive-data-removal requires git-filter-repo 2.47 or later. This is a coordinated recovery operation, not something a pre-commit hook should run automatically.
A rewrite changes commit IDs, can invalidate signatures, and can disrupt pull requests. Force-updating refs does not guarantee removal from existing clones, forks, cached views, or other copies. Coordinate with collaborators and follow GitHub’s steps for affected references and support requests in its sensitive-data removal guide.
