To stream nighttime crickets and rain continuously on YouTube, loop a locally stored video in OBS Studio, send it to YouTube Live with an encoder stream key, and leave the computer and internet connection running. First confirm that your channel can livestream, test the full loop and audio, and plan around YouTube’s archive limits. What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check access before your planned launch.
- A computer that can stay on and connected to the internet for as long as you want to stream, with OBS Studio installed.
- A local video file containing the cricket-and-rain ambience you intend to broadcast. OBS Media Source supports common audio and video formats, including MP4 and WAV.
- Permission to use and broadcast the recording. Use material you own or are authorized to stream; having a file does not establish that you have the necessary rights.
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. For a prerecorded ambience loop, OBS is a software encoder that can play the local file and send its output to YouTube.
Set up the continuous stream in OBS and YouTube
- Confirm YouTube Live access. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live. If this is your first livestream, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Do not plan a launch until the channel can access Live Control Room.
- Prepare and check the media file. Store the video locally on the computer that will run OBS. Open it and confirm that the picture and both the cricket and rain audio are present and play as intended. Check that you have the rights to broadcast it.
- Create an OBS scene and add the video. In OBS, create or select a scene, add a Media Source, and select the local file. Enable the source’s Loop property. OBS documents this setting as restarting the file when playback reaches the end.
- Test the loop before broadcasting. Play the scene and listen for the ambience while checking the picture. Let the file reach its end once to confirm it starts again as expected. This catches an incorrect file selection, missing audio, or a loop that is not enabled before viewers encounter it.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live, open the Stream tab, then create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room.
- Enter the stream details in OBS. Open OBS streaming settings and enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. Treat the key as a private credential: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not share it or expose it in a public screenshot.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that the image is correct and the audio is audible. Only then click Go live in YouTube.
- Monitor the stream. Check YouTube’s stream health and the computer/network while it runs. A stream intended to be continuous can still be interrupted by a computer, encoder, network, or platform failure.
Choose settings and bandwidth carefully
The setup information here does not establish a single correct resolution, frame rate, or bitrate for every cricket-and-rain file and internet connection. Start with output settings appropriate to the source and connection, then use YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators to catch problems. Avoid choosing a bitrate that consumes all available upload capacity.

- Leave upload headroom: YouTube recommends roughly 20% spare upload bandwidth above the stream bitrate. For example, if the selected bitrate is B, plan for upload capacity of about 1.2 × B or more. This is headroom, not a guarantee against drops.
- Test comparable material: YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement. For an ambience stream, test the actual file and listen for low, missing, distorted, or abruptly cut-off sound.
- Keep the whole path reliable: OBS must keep running, the computer must remain on, and the network connection must stay available. A laptop going to sleep or an internet outage can interrupt the broadcast.
Plan sessions around YouTube archives
YouTube says it can automatically archive livestreams shorter than 12 hours. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; this is an archive warning, not a promise that YouTube will end the broadcast at 12 hours. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams beyond that threshold.

If keeping a YouTube replay matters, end the session before it reaches 12 hours, save a local recording as a backup, and start a new stream session. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Do not rely on an uninterrupted, indefinite stream to produce a complete replay.
Copyright and monetization considerations
Use original recordings or material whose license permits livestreaming on YouTube. The setup steps do not grant rights to a sound recording, music, field recording, video, or other creator’s work. Keep license or permission records where applicable, and check the terms for any third-party ambience asset before broadcasting it.

Whether a repetitive ambience channel qualifies for monetization is not established by the encoder setup guidance. Do not assume that a technically valid stream is automatically eligible; check YouTube’s current monetization policies and channel-specific status in YouTube Studio before relying on revenue.

Troubleshoot common failures
- You cannot access Go live: Check channel verification and whether the channel has a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. If first-time activation is pending, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Recheck the stream URL and key against the current encoder stream in Live Control Room. Confirm OBS is pointed at the intended stream and has actually started streaming. Keep the stream key private.
- The preview is black or the wrong video appears: Confirm the Media Source points to the intended local file and is visible in the active OBS scene. Play the source locally to verify the file itself.
- There is no ambience audio: Check that the selected file contains audio, that the Media Source is active, and that OBS’s audio meters respond during playback. Listen in the YouTube preview before going live.
- The video stops at the end: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. Test through the end of the file instead of assuming the setting is working.
- The stream drops or stream health degrades: Check the internet connection and available upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% headroom above the bitrate. Check that the computer has not slept and OBS remains open; restart the encoder and verify the preview before resuming the live event.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: YouTube does not guarantee an archive for a stream over 12 hours. For a needed replay, keep sessions under 12 hours and make a local recording backup.
